Richard DeHart "Dick" Crockett was a stunt coordinator and stuntman on who worked on Star Trek: The Original Series. He was William Shatner's stunt double in the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Among his other television guest appearances was a 1966 episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ("The Off-Broadway Affair"). Interviewed by David Castell the same year, Peter said: "A sense of timing is an essential for an actor, a comedian, a director or an editor. George Burns was saying recently that there is no such thing as timing. Of course there is. What he meant was that you can't teach it, you can only learn from experience. Burns says that all it is is waiting for the audience to stop laughing, then saying the next line. That's the fundamental, but the crucial moment comes just after the laugh. If it was on a graph, it would be just over the apex. Groucho Marx used to say, 'No, but seriously, folks!' There are a dozens of clichΓ© lines, anything to stop the audience from going down, from letting them pass that pinnacle. George Burns is a master of that, so is Ted Ray. It's a luxury to work with an actor who has this sense of timing. You see the line coming at you, you wait until just the right second and then you hit it back. It's gorgeous. The parts that work well in this film, work really really well and the weaker parts are just ok. Sellers is in fine form with Clouseauβs ineptness (and accent) being escalated from the earlier films. Christopher Plummer is fine as the Phantom but heβs no David Niven. The Phantom scenes, whilst good, are just holding things up when weβre just wanting to get back to Clouseau (a situation that Shot in the Dark and Pink Panther Again Strikes Again get around). The making of a perfect scene π Peter Sellers and Catherine Schell in the memorable swimming pool scene from "The Return of the Pink Panther", 1975. The second clip shows the making of that scene, which was filmed at the Gstaad Palace Hotel in Switzerland. In an article for the Swiss Deluxe Hotels site, the manager of the Gstaad Palace, Andrea Scherz, recalls the filming. He was six years old at the time and was fascinated and over the moon about being able to watch the filming. "In a scene filmed at the swimming pool, Peter Sellers had to watch an attractive lady and then fall into the water in perfect sync with her, whilst making the whole thing seem unintentional. That was no mean feat, so it took three attempts to get it just as the director wanted it. And so Sellers had to take off his wet suit and get completely dry before getting dressed and restyled again, twice." Peter Sellers and screenwriter Jim Moloney look at the script on the set of "The Fiendish Plot of Dr Fu Manchu", 1980. Moloney co-wrote the script for the movie, which is based on the Sax Rohmer novel. In 1979, Peter and Jim started to write together the script for what was to be the new Pink Panther movie, called "Romance of the Pink Panther". The movie was to be made without Blake Edwards, and directed this time by Clive Donner (who directed Peter on "What's new, Pussycat?" a few years before). The script was completed in July 1980, and shooting was to start in November of that same year. Peter told a columnist about the new adventures of the famous Inspector: "Clouseau will expose a side of himself no one has seen. He's going to be involved with a woman who's deeply in love with him, and we'll see his reaction to that." The actress who reportedly was to play his love interest was Pamela Stephenson. The script was sent on July 16, 1980. Proud of its result, Peter sent the following note to his agent Martin Baum: "Script on way to you by courrier. No joking, I think it's bloody terrific, and I hope you will too." Remembering Michael Sellers, Peter Sellers' son, who was born on this day in 1954. Michael is Peter's first child from his marriage to Anne, and only son. Michael had small parts in some of Peter's movies, including "Mr. Topaze" and "There's a Girl in my Soup". Michael was a builder and an author, and published three books on his father. Michael sadly passed away in 2006.
