Me costaría creer que Charlotte Wood no tuviese en mente ni conociese de refilón siquiera este tronadísimo festín cuando germinó 'En Estado Salvaje' (Ed. LUMEN) -esas eran 10, eso sí- ni, sobre todo, cuando Bruno Mattei -montador en ésta- se llevó al talego a la Emmanuelle de Laura Gemser siendo menos Emmanuelle que nunca para soportar perrerías sádicas y enratizadas (mejor no entro en detalles). No es que Franco inventase los WIP Films -dicho así, solo de apellido, tiene su punto de gracia-, pero por el grado de carnaza me aventuro a creer que sus favoritas eran las japonesas. Él tampoco se cubre mal las espaldas en lo que a cartel toca con su musa Maria Rohm, Luciana Paluzzi ('Operación Trueno') curando el hipo a mano abierta y Maria Schell ganándose los garbanzos frente a un tiránico gobernador Herbert Lom en una espartana y encabritada maldad compartida con Mercedes McCambridge. Lo que no sé es hasta qué punto los tres últimos sabían que estaban rodando una película con secuencias no tanto sugerentes como repletas de primeros planos de catas de marisco, melones de tomelloso, mandarina y fruta rica en potasio despachurrándose entre sí y pasadas por el mismo aro por el que Franco se pasaba el raccord en algunos momentos de refocigueo. Al final nadie se casa y gana el malo.

Germany & UK The notorious German / British co production markofthedevilmovie was banned in many countries; blocked from German video release until 2016, & in the UK after a tunicated cinematic release, it was released on #precertvideo U/C but banned as #section3videonasty until a 93 release minus, 4m 27s, & then in 03, missing just 38s & was finally put out in full 10 years later. Essentially an #exploitationfilm period #folkhorror movie, masquerading as educational historic drama, set around 17th Century witch hunts, that announces in it's opening credit voice over, that over 8 million suspected witches were killed in reality the number was from 40,000–60,000. Heavily influenced & similar to, more graphic & exploitative, almost but not quite as good copy of Michael Reeves's 'Witchfinder General'/ WFG 67 & the similarities are no coincidence. Frequent Jess Franco collaborator, co-director, producer & costar Hoven's (Castle Of Creeping Flesh, 68, #markofthedevil 2, 73) script was loosely based on an unfilmed Reeves screenplay & readapted by Armstrong, (Horror House, 69, Screamtime, 83) Reeves was originally to direct MOTD but passed away so WFG co-director took over the job. MOTD out grossed WFG at the box office. With convincing gore SFX from #alenahejdánková the film is infamous for it's scenes of rack torture, tongue & finger removal, rapes & whippings, MOTD was very strong for it's but is not so full on by contemporary standards & there's much more to the film than just it's nastiness. The movie is exquisitely shot by cinematographer #ernstwkalinke with good use of beautiful Austrian locations & a real castle. Meticulous attention is paid to costumes & set pieces. Similar too & perhaps influential on Ortolani's score for 'Cannibal Holocaust', 80, MOTD has a beautiful soundtrack by #michaelholm. The film showcases good acting with a strong cast including #herbertlom #oliverakatarina #udokier #reggienalder & #herbertfux. No room left to summarize the plot. Not for everyone but recommended.

Durch das Setting in einem britischen Anwesen, hat der Film einen gothischen Touch, aber er spielt dabei in der (damaligen) Gegenwart… Bei Anthologiefilmen ist es immer so eine Sache: die Vignetten sind meist 20 bis 30 Minuten lang und laufen oft auf eine eine Art Pointe hinaus. Die ist entweder abstrus, oder vorhersehbar. Das liegt natürlich auch an der notwendigen Einfachheit der Stories. Asylum ist für einen Anthologie-Film schon in Ordnung, erzählt vier Horrorgeschichten inkl. Rahmenhandlung und ist gut besetzt. #herbertlom und #petercushing als Altstars, aber eben auch #charlotterampling und #brittekland als junges (Star-)Gemüse können sich sehen lassen. Das Budget war offenkundig nicht sonderlich üppig und so funktionieren manche der Tricks besser als andere (Stichwort „Killerpuppen“), aber das tut dem Spaß kaum einen Abbruch. Asylum liefert 90 Minuten nostalgischen Grusel, der angestaubt wirken darf. LAS MINAS DEL REY SALOMÓN (1985) Dir: J Lee Thompson Interp: Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone, John Rhys-Davies, Herbert Lom, Oliver Tengende Un Indiana Jones del Caprabo. En este #ciclocannon volvemos a cambiar de género para adentrarnos esta vez en la aventura pura. Ese género que tantos buenos momentos nos dieron de niños y que fue el producto que mejor le salió a la compañía reina de la serie B. Y eso que no hiciera muchas, pero son las más disfrutables, junto algunas de acción. El guión se toma bastante a cachondeo ya no solo la fidelidad a la novela de Henry Rider Haggard, sino también el vivir de la fama del arqueólogo más legendario encarnado por Harrison Ford. La trama es altamente ligera y fluida, pues parece que ya lleve empezada 20 minutos antes de sus títulos iniciales. Te mete en la historia nada más empezar. La ambientación es maravillosa. Esa África de la época colonial con el ejército alemán previo a la I° Guerra Mundial. El vestuario, las localizaciones y decorados son excelentes para una producción que costó lo que costó. Además, cuenta con una magnífica BSO muy a la altura de la de John Williams para la trilogía de Spielberg, obra de Jerry Goldsmith. En su elenco cuenta incluso con una figura clave de la saga de Indiana Jones, el gran John Rhys-Davies. La bellísima Sharon Stone (Casino) y una versión aún más cutre de Chuck Norris, Richard Chamberlain (El pájaro espino) son junto a Rhys-Davies los protagonistas del film. Oliver Tengende (La jungla de marfil), Herbert Lom (La pantera rosa) y Bernard Archard (El pueblo de los malditos). Valoración 6,5/10. Siendo producto de la Cannon, no anda exenta de absurdeces como cuando lo arrastra el tren y se pone a patinar sobre los raíles. Con un par, sí señor. THE DEAD ZONE Even after watching five of his feature films, David Cronenberg’s filmography has been such a mixed bag for me that I really don’t know what to make of him so far, and so I figured that the only real solution to that would be to watch more of his movies. Despite its potential, The Dead Zone doesn’t really live up to its Stephen King-penned premise, as the initial promise of watching Christopher Walken reckon with his newfound psychic abilities after a five year coma gets dulled by a lack of any real stakes, urgency, and meaningful characterization. Of all things, I found the structure of this movie to be weirdly similar to that of Love on a Leash, because while most films intertwine their main plot with several other storylines, The Dead Zone instead has entire sideplots spring up out of nowhere before being resolved roughly two scenes later, and that made the scenes involving detective work, potential drownings, and political corruption not actually be all that interesting due to how little weight they were given throughout the film. Generally speaking, I wouldn’t say that I liked The Dead Zone very much, but there were two elements to it that kept me from calling the film an outright bad one. Like usual, Christopher Walken gave a solid and compelling lead performance here as Johnny Smith, and his magnetic screen presence was able to make up for how underwritten his character actually was. The assassination setpiece in The Dead Zone was also really well executed, as it was pretty much the only scene in the whole movie that had any real tension to it (although Christopher Walken yelling “THE ICE, IS GONNA BREAK!” was easily my favorite individual moment in the whole movie). Those two aspects of The Dead Zone were able to keep me just engaged enough to say that it wasn’t a bad film, but that doesn’t mean that I consider it to be a good one, and while I am still intrigued by the rest of David Cronenberg’s filmography, my faith in them appealing to my tastes has unfortunately started to wane. Horror Anthologies? love ‘em! Amicus horror anthologies from the 70s? Can’t get enough ! Comfort food like a bowl of toasted maggots! Amicus was a British film company and direct rival of Hammer films using many of the same actors, directors and craftsmen. But Amicus focused on anthology horrors - collections of short gruesome tales introduced in a framing story mostly written by Robert (Psycho) Bloch and chock-a-block with British character actors of the day. In fact they licensed Tales From The Crypt and Vault Of Horror from EC comics and did so well with them they made a cottage industry rolling out their own anthologies like Torture Dungeon, The House That Dripped Blood , Dr Terror’s House of Horrors ( my fave) and this one: ASYLUM A young Dr. arrives at an asylum to interview for a position. He’s met not by the doctor In charge, but his associate - a cranky Patrick Magee. Seems the head doctor has gone off his chum and is locked away with the rest of the “incurables” . Our young Dr. is challenged to interview all the patients and decide who is the head Dr. and only then will he be hired. So each story unfolds: “Frozen Fear”: about infidelity, an axe and a freezer. “The Weird Tailor” about two desperate men and a resurrection suit. “Lucy Comes To Stay”: about a fragile girl and her spirited bestie. And “Mannequins of Horror”: about mind transference and murderous dolls. While not especially scary, the tales are ghoulish and wry. The effects are not terribly good even from the 70s standpoint but thy have charm. The cast is the main draw here and is a delight! Four tales plus the wraparound gives you the opportunity to have favorites. Where one tale might be less than satisfying the next might tickle you. I personally think this is one of Amicus’ stronger offerings without a stinker on the bunch. So toast up that big bowl of maggots, and pull up a slab.
