Meet Coal and Biggie 🐺🐶 Letting go is Solo was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, she truly was the best friend I could have ever ask for. Just a couple of days after she passed I went to the SPCA, actually to bring back some transport boxes, and as I walked in, I knew, I need the “tipletipletiple” sound of footsteps behind me, the wiggly tail and a fluffball that walks with me through town and our beautiful nature. I can safe an animal and they’ll safe me back ☺️ Coal and Biggie’s stories touched me. Coal was on a lodge before and Biggie never had a home in his life, always on the streets and shelter and when I heard they were at the SPCA for 3 years already I knew I had to give them a chance. Coal funny enough met Solo and me about 1,5 years ago when I was still living behind the stables and the SPCA. Solo loved him!! Unfortunately at the time I couldn’t have another dog. Now 1,5 years later he is home! And wauw does he remind me of her! 🥹🥺 Biggie is just one happy dog in a clown suit! You just gotta love him! There’s some work on trust and indoor peeing, but from day one he made progress and he’s happy, which is where it is all about! Boet, Coal & Biggie we just continue our weird little family! We decided to foster a dog a month ago. Ashton and I went back to the SPCA last week to grab a new bed and toys for our Tony Baloney, and we walked the dog wing, again (I don’t know why I do that to myself) but there are so many sweet pups in need. The SPCA contacted me last week and asked for my help to raise funds and awareness. We LOVE our Tony Baloney! He is a long term foster (I’ll never give him back) who is under protective custody in an ongoing case (that’s why I can’t show his face). The NSPCA expresses its concern over the lack of transparency and pure inaction by @capenature, the Western Cape Provincial Nature Conservation authority, regarding the lone elephant bull in captivity at Fairy Glen Nature Reserve – where three lions were left suffering after sustaining serious burns in February this year. Since becoming aware of the approximately 43-year-old elephant bull, who has been solitary and confined since 2008, the NSPCA requested the nature conservation permit and license in terms of the Performing Animals Protection Act 24 of 1935. Now, almost four months later, Cape Nature is mum about the status of the reserve’s compliance with nature conservation and animal exhibition laws, citing “CapeNature confirms that every effort is being made to facilitate compliance and, whilst the entity has made reasonable effort towards compliance of the facility, CapeNature is not at liberty to discuss the detail of its dealings with Fairy Glen.” The NSPCA has therefore submitted an application/request in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA) to Cape Nature, wherein we shall seek information about the compliance status, as well as Cape Nature’s dealings with Fairy Glen. The welfare of the bull is at risk, with the NSPCA appointed veterinarian noting muscle atrophy, which requires a specialised diet. The NSPCA has confirmation from Fairy Glen that the elephant is not receiving any supplements with its food and that the private facility relies on donations from the public to sustain the elephant’s feeding. The elephant only receives lucern, vegetables, hay and spekboom. Cape Nature has an obligation, thanks to the NSPCA’s previous High Court litigation, to consider welfare in its decision-making regarding the animal. @totispca invites the community to its Mother’s Day open day on May 11 from 08:30 to 11:45 at its premises. In an attempt to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the animals in its care, the animal shelter hosts open days to showcase the work it does. The SPCA’s Michelle Hannan said, “We will have all our usual treats ready for you, including scrumptious food, great stalls to look at and beautiful animals up for adoption. Spoil yourselves and come and join us.” Some of the tasty food that will be on sale includes breakfast rolls, vegetable breyani, vegan food, pancakes and baked goods. In addition, the SPCA is having another pet photographic competition – this time for mothers and their fur babies. It is R50 per pet to enter. The closing date is tomorrow (May 7). Email a photograph of yourself and your pet, along with proof of payment, to [email protected]. The winner will be announced on the open day. Community members are encouraged to donate baked goods or unwanted household items for volunteers to sell. Stalls are also available at R100 each. The address is 1 Nyati Road, Athlone Park. Went for a walk with TELUS CSE and the SPCA Wag and Walk event at Confederation Dog Park, got to spend some time outside and enjoyed the great outdoors.. but turns out I'm more suitable staying indoors as my Hoomans had to carry me more than half of the time as I refused to get my paws dirty in the dirt trail.
