An estates sale at 312 N. Faring Road by @handledestatesales certainly had it's share of famed owners. The home was built for Ziegfeld showgirl and actress Fanny Brice in 1938 by architect Max C. Drebin and carpenter James Dickason with the original building permits created in 1937. Fanny lived at 312 N. Faring Rd until her death in 1951. Producer Alan Ladd, Jr. would own the home in the 90s. Recently, the home was sold for $49M by Richard King of the King World Production family. Richard and his wife Lauren hired famed architect Oscar Shamamian to do a renovation. However, similar to Pickfair, the renovation ended up razing most of the home except for the front façade. So at least we have this one image of a then and now of Fanny Brice in front of the front door. 📽🖤📽 There we’re plenty of stories in the life of Alan Ladd comparable to some of the grand Hollywood films he starred in. Alan Walbridge Ladd was an actor and producer. Ladd found success in film in the 1940s and early 1950s, particularly in Westerns, such as Shane, and in films noir. He was often paired with Veronica Lake in films noir such as The Blue Dahlia On November 29, 1937, Ladd's mother, who was staying with him following the breakup of a relationship. She purchased some arsenic-based ant paste from a grocer and committed suicide by drinking it in the back seat of Ladd's car. Ladd married Marjorie Jane "Midge" Harrold, a high school sweetheart, in October 1936. Their only child, Alan Ladd, Jr., was born on October 22, 1937. They divorced in July 1941 and she died in 1957. On March 15, 1942, Ladd married his agent and manager, former film actress Sue Carol in Mexico City. Carol had a daughter from a previous marriage, Carol Lee whom Alan and Sue raised. In addition, they had two children of their own, Alana, when Ladd was in the army and David Alan. Alan Ladd, Jr., was a film executive and producer and founder of the Ladd Company he was responsible for some of the biggest films spanning his career such as Star Wars, and Braveheart. Actor David Ladd, who co-starred with his father as a child in The Proud Rebel, was married to Charlie's Angels star Cheryl Ladd. On November 2, 1962, Ladd was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood with a bullet wound near his heart. The bullet penetrated Ladd's chest around the third and fourth rib, through the lungs, and bounced off the rib cage. At the time, Ladd said he thought he heard a prowler, grabbed a gun, and tripped over, accidentally shooting himself. This was accepted by the police investigating. His popularity diminished in the mid 1950s, though he continued to appear in numerous films. He died of an accidental combination of alcohol, a barbiturate, and two tranquilizers in January 1964. His death, due to cerebral edema caused by an acute overdose and was was ruled accidental and suicide was ruled out. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

I’ve been spending the last few days reading tributes and messages about my Uncle Laddie. What moves me the most is the fact that his love of movies was so infectious, it spread far wider than just our family and the filmmakers he hired.Laddie was a fan first ! He loved movies. Period.Some of my most cherished childhood memories are going to Laddie’s on Sunday nights for a screening of a new picture, eating Nate n Al’s and tucking into a sleeping bag to witness cinematic magic.It made me love movies. It made ME a fan.So, as a family we feel an immeasurable loss, it’s comforting to know we’re sharing that with the greater film fan family. I'm a few days late on this but RIP Alan Ladd Jr. He was a legendary studio exec and producer who greenlit Star Wars and Alien and produced several films I love from the eighties (Blade Runner, Outland and Mike's Murder being my favorites). I was sad this morning to hear that film executive Alan Ladd, Jr. had died. I had several dealings with Ladd, or “Laddie” as he was called, and found him to be that rare commodity in Hollywood – a gentle man and a gentleman. I first met him when Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz and I met with him to pitch a film. This is how I remembered the meeting in a blog I wrote about Gary: “Later, when we were in partnership, we had a pitch meeting with Alan Ladd, Jr., then the head of MGM. Laddie, as he was known, had, of course, been at 20th when the first two Star Wars films were made, so he and Gary knew each other very well. Ladd was also a quiet-spoken, laconic man, although more cowboy than Quaker, much like his dad, film star Alan Ladd. We sat down in his office, and Gary and Ladd faced off each other. “Gary,” Ladd said in a simple greeting. A beat. “Laddie,” Gary greeted back. A beat. “How are you?” Ladd asked. A beat. “Good. And you…” It was like watching a ping-pong game in slow motion. But the meeting was successful; Laddie bought the pitch.” Later I was producing an animated feature based on the Betty Boop character for Ladd and MGM. When, with my fellow producers, including Richard Zanuck and his wife and producing partner, Lili Fini Zanuck, I had a meeting with Ladd to discuss the screenplay. Ladd admitted that he didn’t really understand the script because he didn’t know much about animation. “What do you want me to do?” he asked us. I immediately said, “Greenlight it..” Apparently, this was a bold ask as Richard looked shocked that I would be so blunt. But Lili agreed and jumped in and said, “Yes, Laddie, greenlight it, greenlight it!” Ladd didn’t quite greenlight it, but he did approve money to storyboard the screenplay, hire the voice cast, and create a filmed story reel. I called it a chartreuse light. Sadly, three months into this process, Ladd lost his job at the head of MGM, and the “new guy” scuttled the film. Not making this film was a disappointment for me. Alan Ladd, Jr. 1937 - 2022 The son of a classic Hollywood leading man, Laddie (as his friends called him) made a name for himself first as an agent and producer in the 1960s, then as a studio executive in the 1970s at 20th Century Fox (now @20thcenturystudios). Laddie was known as a risk taker and had a penchant for recognizing potential in a story. One young filmmaker that caught his eye was George Lucas, who pitched Laddie a story about a galaxy far, far away. According to George, Laddie’s reaction to the pitch was, “I like it. I don’t know what it is, but I loved AMERICAN GRAFFITI (George’s previous film). So anything you do is okay with me.” Laddie was George’s rock of support during the production of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, when cost overruns, location issues, and other factors caused the board of directors to almost shut down production. Laddie put his career on the line for STAR WARS and felt justifiably vindicated when the film was a gigantic success. It could be said that without the efforts of Alan Ladd, Jr., there would be no @starwars. In the 1980s, Laddie became an independent producer and fostered some of the most famous films of the last four decades. For Laddie, it all began with a great story. If he believed in the story and the talent, Laddie backed them all the way—success or failure. And he engendered a lot of loyalty because of that.
