Elvis (2022) dir. Baz Luhrmann Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) reflects on the life of his client Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) from his childhood, to his discovery, and his eventual career as a rock and roll movie star during the 1950's as well as the complexities of Parker and Presley's managerial relationship. I was pretty excited to see this movie, but I feel like I came out of it just a little disappointed. Going in, I didn't realize just how much Parker would be piloting the story and one day later I still feel like this was a strange choice/person to showcase the life of Elvis Presley. The movie also catapults you from scene to scene at a breakneck pace that often feels like an Elvis Presley fever dream that is very much akin to previous Baz Luhrmann efforts like The Great Gatsyby. I called it a rollercoaster as Allen and I were watching it and I think that's a fair assessment. It's a colorful, loud, and fanciful movie that feels like a rush, but then a little past the hour mark of the movie, the film slows down to wind-down mode that plays out the last half of the movie. And it was that pacing towards the end that really brought it down for me. Austin Butler did a fantastic job playing Elvis though and I feel that without him, you wouldn't really have a very watchable movie. Tom Hanks was laughably bad here, with his accent coming and going. Is it Russian? Is it Cajun? Who knows? This movie is kind of a hard one to unpack and I know that I have a lot more to say on it, but it's kind of hard to word. Like how I felt as if this movie was more about the people who built Elvis as opposed to a movie about who Elvis was as a person. Yes, that latter bit is present in the movie, but I don't think it's really the focus. And the several times where Elvis appropriates black songs he'd learned from the black neighborhoods he grew up in, felt a little off. Like I know they were trying to show that he felt an affinity towards the black community but it came across as slightly racist to me.

The King of Rock continues to generate a lot of profit and a lot of admiration from the fans for their memorable songs, even after his death decades. Elvis feared being forgotten, feared that he would not be able to maintain his success without Cel. Parker, which possibly led him to make wrong choices. The kid from Memphis, Tennessee, who rocked the world with the sound, hot waddle and booming voice of his rock and roll, was the only one who didn't believe in himself, who didn't believe he could fulfill his dreams. Even having his own plane, which provided him with the wings he needed to fly towards the realization of his dreams, he remained trapped in the vicious circle in which he himself was trapped. This is an approach taken from the perspective of Australian director Baz Luhrmann. The biopic rekindles the real facts and/or relevant fiction of Elvis Presley's personal life and career, starring Austin Butler with glitz, glamor and talent. Being narrated through his manager, Tom Parker, co-starred by the masterful magnetism of Tom Hanks, in the cruel condition of executioner, responsible for the death of Elvis. The cel Parker was, without a doubt, 100% responsible for the rise of the musical career and the phenomenon that Presley became, through his commercial marketing feeling. Quite dazzling and cunning webs for a simple young man who has lost control of himself. As for the responsibility for the decay and death of the rock star, I believe it is in the same proportion as the 50% contract between them. Anyway, a good choice for a new approach to this brilliant comet that shook the world with its talent, its brilliance and that marked a generation. Elvis (2022) Genre : Drama Rating : 6/10 The life of Elvis Presley, the famous singer, is told from the perspective of his manager. "Elvis" features all the glitz and glam you'd anticipate from an Elvis movie, but it lacks complexity. It moves like a Christmas fairytale turned nightmare for exactly the first half hour of the movie; one that is propelled not by jealousy but by the insidious grips of capitalism and racism, and the potent concoction they produce. Even though Hanks has acted in many biopics, he wasn’t very good in this one, his accent slips constantly and even though he’s trying to be malicious, it just doesn’t come off that way. Unfortunately, the movie turns into a stuffy biopic. We see Presley's rapid ascent, his early errors, and his ultimate slide into self-parody. The plot just doesn't have enough fun or interiority to hold up as the rhythm slows. Luhrmann makes an effort to conceal the mixed emotions that many Black people of different generations have toward the alleged King. A filmmaker has a responsibility to consider whether they are the best person to tell a story since awareness alone is not enough. Luhrmann isn’t the right person to tell this story and that's a flaw that a lot of viewers won't be able to overlook. It's challenging to fully describe why the movie fails, especially given that it occasionally provides engrossing amusement for extended periods of time. Let’s give credit where credit is due though, Austin Butler gave such an amazing performance as Elvis, it made the movie worth watching this one time. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is an example of how to do a biopic. I was never really into Elvis Presley or his music but after seeing this film, it has at least given me some appreciation for him and see that he was talented and great at what he did along with the fact that he was screwed over and used as a money machine half of the time which makes me feel a little sympathetic towards him. And it had me learn that he had a really interesting career history (except for the parts that were fictionalised of course) and was invested in what he was up to outside of his music (aside from the inappropriate age gap relationship with Priscilla as she was a lot younger in real life than how she was portrayed in the film). And this is all thanks to Luhrmann’s direction and writing, the fantastic cinematography and editing choices and sequences and a stunning and strong performance by Austin Butler which was the biggest asset of the movie and made you feel like you were watching Elvis himself instead of an actor playing him, alongside Tom Hanks’ performances who gives us a great demonstration of just how despicable Presley’s manager truly was and it goes to show how terrific and skilled of an actor Hanks really is. One little problem I had with the film and it is a little nitpicky is the modern cover songs that are on the soundtracks playing in some scenes. No suele gustarme el cine de #BazLuhrman, pero #Elvis (2022) lo logró conmigo. Tal vez porque soy fan del personaje central, tal vez porque la narrativa (a pesar del artilugio visual excesivo característico) es bastante clásica, me gocé y emocioné cada momento musical de esta peli. Un poco siguiendo el molde del ‘Amadeus’ de Peter Shaffer, Lurhman y su guionista, #SamBromell, cuentan la historia del ídolo desde el punto de vista del ‘villano’, su manager explotador, el #CoronelTomParker, interpretado por un #TomHanks cubierto de maquillaje. #AustinButler hace muy bien su dibujo del ídolo, tratando de imitar cada movimiento y energía de interpretaciones que son harto conocidas y accesibles al dominio público. Pero claramente los verdaderos protagonistas de #Elvis, cómo en la mayoría de las pelis del amigo Baz, son la dirección de arte, el montaje y la música. ELVIS Me gusta mucho la música de Elvis, nunca he investigado su vida como para darle un contexto y he sido feliz así. Esta peli es de más de dos hora y media, condensa muchísimo, toda la carrera de Elvis y casi que su vida entera MÁS la relación con su manager. Y puede que sea culpa mía por ir con expectativas, pero me ha dejado frío. Mi idea era conocer la parte más personal de Elvis, de donde salía su música, su ascenso y como lo llevó… Y lo que nos cuentan se enfoca mucho en el apartado comercial. El coronel y Elvis, como este señor convirtió al cantante en el mayor artista de la historia y como lo explotaba. Hasta la segunda mitad no empezamos a ver a Elvis como una persona. Me refiero a sus aspiraciones, como enfrenta situaciones complicadas y como se expresa con la música. Con lo que vemos al principio parece un chaval de calle nacido en un contexto determinado y con un talento enorme que encaja y enfrenta a su época a partes iguales. Las partes musicales son el techo de la peli, toda la parte del especial navidad es una maravilla. Conocemos el contexto, las motivaciones y como crece este evento, acabando en un momento extraordinario. Igual que con la primera actuación en las vegas. Y casi casi que ya. Las demás escenas creo que ni siquiera terminan las canciones. Técnicamente la peli es una locura, una producción absurdamente buena y desde ya principal candidata para llevarse los premios técnicos en los oscars. Vestuario, escenarios, todo parece estar en su sitio y en su época. La dirección es una master class de entretenimiento. Miles de recursos para no perder la atención, tanto por velocidad y lucecitas tanto en momentos más lentos y dramáticos. No se me ha hecho pesado en ningún momento. Una de las claves para que sea un taquillazo. Como biopic musical, no es el que quería de Elvis, pero para eso ya hay mil documentales. Una oportunidad desaprovechada de volver a poner en el nº1 un icono mundial. Aun con todo, yo iría a verla. Es todo un espectáculo, que al final es lo que cuenta y lo que pretende. . . The grand-scale spectacular biopic #elvis (the fourth narrative treatment of the life of Elvis Presley in any filmed medium to go by that precise title, & at 159 minutes, somehow inexplicably, also the shortest!!!) is the first feature directed by #bazluhrmann in the nine years since he gave us the largely under-rated #thegreatgatsby ., it's been more than two full decades since his last big hit with #moulinrouge having turned 21 years old in the same month that Elvis was released. That's a very long time to go without having a proper project from English-language cinema's foremost maximalist sensualist, & thus the best news first: Elvis is a hell of a good Baz Luhrmann film. It's also a pretty damn good #elvispresley film, for that matter, & it's a little bit surprising that those two things aren't more directly in conflict with each other. The good Luhrmann parts first: literally, in fact, since the opening 15 or 20 minutes of Elvis feel somewhat like a direct remake of the opening 15 or 20 minutes of Moulin Rouge, & they're also barely about Elvis Presley (played stupendously well here by newcomer #austinbutler (his most notable appearance being as a bit part in Tarantino’s #onceuponatimeinhollywood), who has been toiling away for years, mostly in television for young adolescents, & is pretty clearly set to become a much bigger deal on the back of this film).

OH MY FREAKING GOSH!!!! I went to go see Elvis last night and it was so good. I’ve been so excited for this movie to release and the wait was worth it. Austin Butler 😍 the MAIN reason I went to go see this movie, that man killed it!! I just want to say that I’m so happy for him right now, I remember watching him in his Disney Channel/ Nickelodeon days and now he is starring in a lead role in a really big movie 👏 I’m so happy for him and I can tell this movie is going to skyrocket his career. His portrayal as Elvis was really good to the point where homie sounds like Elvis himself, like I always wondered did they used a voice filter for him because he just sounded too much like Elvis but I found out that Austin is a method actor and he spent a year and a half speaking and living like Elvis and learning all his mannerisms….AND he sang some of Elvis’s early songs in the movie which I didn’t find out until later like MY GOSH 👏👏👏👏 Now on to Tom Hanks's character who was the villain of the movie….Colonel Tom Parker. This is my first time hearing about him in any way shape or form and all I can say is wow, Tom Hanks made me hate him based on how he was treating Elvis and basically using him and his talent just to cover his debt, I’m pretty sure it was a lot deeper than just money but I’m just going off by the movie which is told by the POV of Tom Parker and not Elvis Presley. Another thing I liked about the movie was how it looked and the visual effects it had 🤩 I can tell the editors had fun with this movie and the SOUNDTRACK!!!! My gosh, I’m listening to it now as I’m writing this 🤩 the soundtrack is so good; if you didn’t like the movie, you would definitely like the soundtrack. Elvis was a solid biopic. It was nice to see Baz Luhrmann taper his typically over the top visuals to tell a rather fascinating story. The film is palatable for the audience. We get to see Elvis the way that feels comfortable. Much of his controversial legacy is unexplored. Skipping over the teenage love affair, the accusations of theft and much more. I understand the families get involved in the process of making these kinds of films, but what did we learn about Elvis that we didn’t already know? The reality is that our heroes are rarely the people we make them out to be and I believe it would have been more interesting to explore the man not the legend. Stylistically, Baz did a wonderful job. The first twenty minutes felt like a sensory overlord. Elvis had a whole act that elicited strong emotions. The get up, the make-up, the dancing, the show of it all. Senses were heightened to the max when you watched him, so I thought it was a brilliant touch to start the film off with so much life. Austin Butler truly embodied Elvis. Not at all shocked by his performance, as I believe he was one of the best parts of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He morphs into the skin of Elvis. His mannerisms, looks, and voice. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, and you felt very much like you were watching a star. Totally in awe. Engrossed in everything he did and said. Elvis is written and directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film is also written by Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner. This Elvis biopic stars Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge and Dacre Montgomery. This week’s Friday release tells the story of Elvis Presley’s rise to fame, how he became the man who all of us know and love plus the the odd relationship he had with manager Colonel Tom Parker. I checked Elvis on Tuesday during the special fan screening event and my expectations were relatively high. I walked out of this movie satisfied as this film was truly an awesome depiction of the life of Elvis. The direction by Luhrmann is excellent and the script is solid minus a few pacing issues here and there that slow down the film. This film looks great and sounds great. It’s also extremely entertaining even for people who have no previous knowledge on Elvis, they could truly delve deep and enjoy this film. There is a lot to learn about this fascinating man and his fascinating relationship with Colonel Parker all packed into this 159 minute film. This film will also truly pull on your heart strings. This film is emotionally draining and truly broke my heart. The part of Elvis though that takes this film to the next level is the performances. Tom Hanks is excellent as Colonel Tom Parker. Austin Butler though steals the show. Butler flourishes throughout this film. His performance is perfect in every way, I was absolutely astounded at how well he embodied Elvis and his mannerisms, his movements, everything. Butler truly gives a powerhouse performance and he is a star in the making. Elvis is a pretty awesome film. It gives us some awesome direction by Baz Luhrmann and a well written script. This film gives us emotional performances and delivers as entertaining film. I really liked Elvis. I truly recommend you all go check it out this weekend.
