Archaeologists have discovered the largest and oldest network of pre-Hispanic cities ever found in the Amazon rainforest, revealing a 2,500-year-old lost civilisation of farmers. The vast site, which covers more than 1,000 square kilometres (385 square miles), was long hidden by the jungle in the Upano valley on the foothills of the Andes mountain range in eastern Ecuador. #lostcity #lostcivilisation #oldcivilization #ancient #amazonrainforest #forest #amazonrainforestfire #archeology #history

Please stand by Indigenous communities as they fight wildfires in the Amazon by donating today (link in bio)! Devastating fires have been consuming the critical biodiversity of Madidi National Park in the Bolivian Amazon, sparking the need for immediate response. Madidi National Park hosts a wealth of biodiversity such as jaguars, red deer, and pink river dolphins, as well as cultural diversity with seven Indigenous Nations including the Toromona peoples who live in voluntary isolation. These fires are quickly approaching Indigenous communities within the park, such as the Tacana community San Miguel del Bala. National resources are scarce, and local community member volunteers are often left to fight these dangerous fires by themselves without proper equipment, often extinguishing what they can with coca-cola bottles filled with water to protect their communities. Please help raise money for hoses, fuel, canned food, and water, before these flames further endanger communities and fragile ecosystems. Thank you for your solidarity and support in helping to preserve this invaluable region and its peoples. All money will be sent to the Commonwealth of the Beni River Basin Indigenous Communities, which is coordinating volunteer firefighting efforts. #givingtuesday #amazonrainforest #amazonrainforestfire #indigenouspeople #bolivianamazon
The date designated to honor the jungle present in nine territories in South America is an excellent opportunity to get to know the rich environmental landscape of the Amazon, which also includes mountains, savannas, mangroves, and permanently flooded areas. The Amazon Rainforest, the largest tropical forest in the world, is often depicted in the popular imagination through images of dense forests, comprised of tall and imposing trees with thick and valuable trunks. However, the more than 5 million square kilometers covered by the Amazon in the South American continent consist of diverse and incredibly varied ecosystems. Considering the complexity of this biome, Amazon Day was established, celebrated on September 5th. Created in 2008 by the Brazilian federal law number 11,621/2007, this date aims to raise awareness and draw attention to the need to protect these biotic areas, which are present in Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, Ecuador, and the Guianas. The Amazon is, in fact, a collection of various ecosystems that interact with each other and are part of a larger unit known as a biome. It harbors an impressive diversity of living beings inhabiting a wide range of environments, some of which are still unknown. Beyond the popular conception of a homogeneous and predominantly green jungle, the Amazon biome also includes savannas, mountains, and coastal ecosystems. It may not seem like it, but in everyday life, there are many things that can be done to protect the rainforest ecosystems of the Amazon and, in general, the environment of the planet. Get informed, engage in discussions, educate others, and write. Communication and social media serve a purpose beyond frivolous activities. All that sound good, but you know? Amazon Rainforest Day: call for boycott! The burning of the Amazon and the darkening of the skies from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, have captured the world's consciousness. 2022 started with a terrible figure: Amazon deforestation is accelerating to levels never seen before. Approximately 430 km2 of the Amazon rainforest were cut down during the month of January alone, 418% more than in January 2021 (83 km2), according to the DETER-B deforestation monitoring system of the Brazilian Space Agency INPE, which controls deforestation through satellites. It is the highest figure for the month of January since records began in 2015 and a worrying sign of the alarming rate of destruction of the largest tropical forest on the planet. December last year, more than 100 governments promised to stop and reverse deforestation by 2030. Despite these promises of hope, the Brazilian government, led by Jair Bolsonaro, is doing quite the opposite, encouraging the burning of forests and the taking of land from indigenous peoples, according to environmental activists who risk their lives to defend nature. The incentive for destruction comes from large-scale international meat and soy companies like JBS and Cargill, and global brands like Stop & Shop, Costco, McDonald's, Walmart/Asda and Sysco who buy from and sell to the public. It is these companies that create the international demand that finances fires and deforestation. The transnational nature of its impact can be seen in the current crisis. Its destruction is not limited to Brazil. Just across the border, in the Bolivian Amazon, more than 1 million hectares have been burned, much of it to clear land for new cattle feed and soybean plantations, in just a few weeks. Paraguay is experiencing similar devastation. #internationalday #worldday #dÃainternacional #dÃamundial #unitednations #nacionesunidas #un #onu #amazonrainforestday #amazonrainforest #amazonrainforestemergency #amazonrainforestfire #dÃadelaselvaamazónica #selvaamazonica #amazonia #selvabrasil #jairbolsonaro #amazonfire #costco #mcdonalds #nestle #walmart #sysco #burgerking #saveamazonia #salvarelamazonas #amazonburning #brazil #bolivia #paraguay
âDespite the recent historic fires in the Amazon, the Brazilian government has not instituted any additional public policy to stop them. On the contrary, the 2021 budget proposed for the Ministry of Environment was the lowest in 21 years. One of the most substantial cuts went to environmental enforcement and firefighting. In May, Brazil saw the highest rate of forest fires in 18 years. As we enter into the second half of 2022 and the beginning of this yearâs fires season in Brazil, people are bracing for another devastating cycle of destruction for the countryâs natural biomes. With the worsening of forest fires and the spike in deforestation as a result of attacks by Bolsonaroâs government, volunteer forest firefighter brigades started to form around the country. In 2021, street artist Mundano and filmmaker André DâElia, both from São Paulo, got organized. They took a group of artists well known to the São Paulo street art scene on an expedition to meet the volunteer brigades during the burning season. While they traveled, DâElia shot scenes for a documentary and Mundano collected ashes he would turn into charcoal paint. Mundano then used this paint to create the largest public mural he has made to date, which he called âAshes of the Forest,â or âCinzas da Florestaâ in Portuguese. The mural was painted on an over 10,000-square-foot wall. âIt was heavy work, both physically and mentally,â Mundano recollected. âWe were painting with remains of death. But after witnessing so much destruction during the expedition, the mural became something beautiful, to be celebrated â the work of these volunteer brigades who were putting their lives on the line to protect all of us.ââ Story: @mariannaolinger ð·: WNV/André DâElia via @wagingnv #amazon #brazil #amazonrainforest #fires #amazonrainforestfire #amazonrainforestemergency #volunteers #environment #environmentalcrisis #climatecrisis #climateemergency #politics #government #bolsonaro #firefighter #destruction #ecosystems #naturalbiomes #burning #amazononfire #brasil #amazonas #amazonfire #naturaldisaster #climatechangeisreal #environmentalawareness #environmentalconservation #climatejustice #savetheplanet

The number of trees cut down in the Brazilian Amazon in January far exceeded deforestation for the same month last year, according to government satellite data. The area destroyed was five times larger than 2021, the highest January total since records began in 2015. Environmentalists accuse Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro of allowing deforestation to accelerate. Protecting the Amazon is essential if we are to tackle climate change. Trees are felled for their wood as well as to clear spaces to plant crops to supply global food companies. At the climate change summit COP26 in Glasgow last year, more than 100 governments promised to stop and reverse deforestation by 2030. The latest satellite data from Brazil's space agency Inpe again calls into question the Brazilian government's commitment to protecting its huge rainforest, say environmentalists. "The new data yet again exposes how the government's actions contradict its greenwashing campaigns," explains Cristiane Mazzetti of Greenpeace Brazil. Greenpeace are calling on supermarkets in the UK and elsewhere to drop suppliers who are involved in deforestation from their meat and dairy supply chains suppliers. Deforestation totalled 430 square kilometres (166 square miles) in January - an area more than seven times the size of Manhattan, New York. Which countries are cutting down trees? The illegal Brazilian gold you may be wearing An indigenous leader trying to protect the Amazon Felling large numbers of trees at the start of the year is unusual because the rainy season usually stops loggers from accessing dense forest. Brazil's vast rainforest absorbs huge amounts of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, acting as what's known as a carbon sink. But the more trees cut down, the less the forest can soak up emissions. ð± Deforestation threatens the vibrant and biodiverse ecosystem of the Amazon Rainforest home to over 3 million species (GreenPeace.org, 2021). ð What is driving deforestation in the Amazon? Animal agriculture is the number one culprit, with cattle ranching accounting for 80% of current deforestation and resulting in the release of 340 million tons of carbon to the atmosphere every year, equivalent to 3.4% of current global emissions (WWF, 2021). ð Research predicts that drier, drought-like conditions will turn the Amazon Forest into a Desert under climate change conditions from animal agriculture and deforestation (Mullan et al, 2021). ððŒThe destruction of the Amazon forest as a result of animal agriculture is one example of the impact of food systems and lifestyle choices on the environment. ð Learn more about the connection between food and climate change by joining our LIVE! On average, one acre of new forest can sequester about 2.5 tons of carbon annually. Young trees absorb CO2 at a rate of 13 pounds per tree each year. Trees reach their most productive stage of carbon storage at about 10 years at which point they are estimated to absorb 48 pounds of CO2 per year. At that rate, they release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support two human beings. Planting 100 million trees could reduce an estimated 18 million tons of carbon per year and consequently save American consumers $4 billion each year on utility bills. . . Restoring the world's lost forests could remove two thirds of all the planet-warming carbon that is in the atmosphere because of human activity, according to a new study. Since the industrial revolution, humans have added around 300 billion tons of extra carbon to the atmosphere -- mainly through burning fossil fuels -- which is heating the planet to dangerous levels. But trees naturally remove carbon from the atmosphere, storing it above and below ground. A new study, carried out by researchers at Swiss university ETH Zurich and published Thursday in the journal Science, has calculated that restoring degraded forests all over the world could capture about 205 billion tons of carbon in total. Global carbon emissions are currently around 10 billion tons per year. . . Source: (https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/07/04/world/forests-capture-two-thirds-of-carbon-emissions-scn-intl/index.html) . . The United States is the worldâs most wasteful country. And the runner-up isnât even close. According to a new report from Verisk Maplecroft, a global risk-assessment and consulting firm, the United States accounts for only about 4 percent of the worldâs population yet generates 12 percent of the planetâs municipal solid waste (MSW), better known as garbage. Each American produces more than 1,700 pounds of it a year, the reportâs authors found, adding up to 239 million tons annually. Do China and India generate more trash? Yes, together theyâre on the hook for 27 percent of the worldâs garbage. But those two countries also have a combined population of 2.7 billion, to our relatively paltry 327 million. The math is mortifying: With more than eight times as many people as we have, China and India manage to produce just a little more than twice the amount of garbage that we do. According to the report, American citizens generate more than three times the amount of waste that their Chinese counterparts do. . . DEFORESTATION. Another topic at #cop26 and another drawing of mine about this exact problem. All the amazing and diverse wildlife loosing their homes just like this Jaguar mother and cub. Then I wanted to show the smoke and fire but I kind of knew I would most likely mess up the whole drawing. Then I thought I burn the paper. The Amazon rainforest has played a critical role in the fight against climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. But a study published in Nature on Wednesday found that humans are threatening its ability to do so â which could have devastating consequences for the planet. The Amazon basin is roughly 80% to 90% of the size of the continental U.S. and contains 2.8 million square miles of jungle, which is more than half of Earth's remaining tropical rainforests, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which helped support the research. The region stores roughly 123 billion tons of carbon in trees and in the soil. "Roughly half of the CO2 that we've emitted from fossil fuels has been absorbed by either the oceans or the land â and that's roughly a 50-50 split," John Miller, one of the study's lead authors, told CBS News. "So there's this huge climate mitigation service that we're getting for free, and global warming would be much worse if trees were not taking this up." . . The Amazon River stores 1/5 of the earthâs fresh water, which brings a lot of benefits both for the people of Brazil and the environment as well. Each second, approximately 175,000 cubic meters of freshwater water is discharged from the Amazon River into the Atlantic Ocean. The freshwater is important because it provides nutrients from the plants, animals, fungi, and minerals. The lack of rainfall would have a devastating impact on the freshwater system and the nutrient input in the river. . . Setting aside the fact that man-made fires are tormenting the Amazon rainforest, if the temperatures increase up to 3 degrees Celsius, natural fires would wipe out 75% of the Amazon. Furthermore, that would create a chain reaction, and the loss of trees would lead to a reduction of rainfall, which in return would cause drier spells of weather, eventually causing more forest fires around the globe. . . #amazonrainforestfire #climatecrisis It's not looking good so far More than 1,000 large fires have burned across the rainforest since January. Experts say this year is on track to be as bad as 2020, when fires razed more than 19 million acres of the world's largest tropical forest. Between August 2020 and July 2021, the rainforest lost 10,476 square kilometers an area nearly seven times bigger than greater London and 13 times the size of New York City, according to data released by Imazon, a Brazilian research institute that has been tracking the Amazon deforestation since 2008.

A group of climate lawyers has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his alleged attacks on the Amazon, which they say amount to "crimes against humanity." . Austrian not-for-profit AllRise filed a landmark complaint at the court in the Dutch city of The Hague on Tuesday. It argues that the actions of Bolsonaro and his administration are a "widespread attack on the Amazon, its dependents and its defenders that not only result in the persecution, murder and inhumane suffering in the region, but also upon the global population," the group said in a statement. . The 286-page filing said there were grounds for "an urgent and thorough ICC investigation and prosecution." . "Climate science demonstrates that consequent fatalities, devastation and insecurity will occur on a far greater scale regionally and globally, long into the future, through the attributable links between the rapid acceleration in deforestation, its contribution to climate change, and the frequency and intensification of extreme weather events," reads the filing. . The document, which was handed over to the ICC prosecutor, is supported by the Climate Observatory, a group of 70 Brazilian civil society organisations. . Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and a vast 59% of its territory is covered by forest, much of it the Amazon, which works as an "air conditioner" for the entire planet, influencing global temperature and rainfall patterns, and absorbing carbon dioxide. . At the United Nations' General Assembly podium in 2020, as flames raged in the Amazon, he claimed foreign agents were overhyping the wildfires in "the most brutal misinformation campaign." . . . Since 1988, humans have destroyed an area of rainforest roughly the size of Texas and New Mexico combined. . Shortly before his 44th birthday, in December 1988, the Brazilian rubber tapper and environmental activist Chico Mendes predicted he would not live until Christmas. âAt first,â he said, âI thought I was fighting to save rubber trees, then I thought I was fighting to save the Amazon rainforest. Now I realize I am fighting for humanity.â . Mendes had received death threats for years. The threats escalated when an aggressive rancher laid claim to a nearby forest reserve, where he intended to burn and level trees to create pasture for cattle. . Three days before Christmas, 1988, Mendes was shot dead by the rancherâs son. It stunned the world. . Since Mendesâs murder, nearly 1 million sq km of the Amazon, an area roughly the size of Texas and New Mexico combined, have been destroyed, primarily in Brazil, but also in Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guyana. . That equates to an average of some 200,000 acres every day, or 40 football fields per minute. In Brazil alone, home to the greatest expanse of forest, the rate of loss has increased by more than 30%. . The Amazon: historically a great carbon absorber, since trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, now releases more carbon than it stores, which adds to, rather helps to reduce, our global climate crisis. . Deforestation rates decreased slightly from 2004 to 2012. But since then, theyâre back on the rise, especially in the past couple of years, since Jair Bolsonaro became president of Brazil. . In short, the Amazon is dying. Entire genetic libraries and symphonies of species, trees, birds, reptiles, insects and more, eons in the making, fine-tuned by natural selection, are being wiped out to make room for methane-belching cows. . Chico Mendes was right. Save the Amazon, and we just might save ourselves. . . .
