Synthesis Post Two of my previous posts were about the animals threatened with extinction and the effects of this happening. One of the articles was “The effects of endangered species in 2024,” and the other was a chart from Statisa titled, “Threatened with extinction.” Both of the sources discuss the problem of animal extinction and tell us that this is a major issue. The chart shows us the increasing number of organisms threatened and the article shows us the effects of animal extinction. The major threatened organisms on earth for extinction include plants, amphibians, corals, mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds. The number of plants and species at risk for animal extinction is 42,108. This result can impact humans and the environment by increasing the risk of getting a disease, imbalance of the ecosystem, loss of biodiversity leading to scarcity, and more. Analysis Post Why is animal extinction is issue we have to focus more on? Statista has a graph titled “The Distribution of the Main Regional Threats to Wildlife Populations in the Living Planet Index.” The graph is about the percentage of wildlife threats for 5 regional countries. The listed causes are habitat degradation, species overexploitation, invasive species and disease, pollution, and climate change. Countries that are listed include North America, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia Pacific region. The important factors to focus on in viewing this graph are the percentage of habitat degradation, species overexploitation, and invasive species and disease. Comparing the levels, North America is second for habitat loss, fifth for species overexploitation, and first for invasive species and disease. This information is valuable because this explains the reason for the loss of 69 percent of the wildlife population since 1970. This graph indicates the causes of animal extinction and it is a global issue. The graph is interesting and easy to understand! #Didyouknow | The monarch butterfly, one of the most beloved and studied butterflies in the world, is now facing the threat of extinction. Native to the American continent, these magnificent creatures embark on an incredible journey each year, traveling over 4000 kilometers from Canada and the United States to Mexico. 🌎 Despite their remarkable strength and popularity, their population has declined significantly in recent years, with estimates ranging from 23% to 72% (IUCN, 2022). Factors such as climate change, habitat loss, and pesticide use are contributing to their decline, putting them at risk of disappearing forever. But there is hope! We can all play a part in saving the monarch butterfly by supporting organizations dedicated to their conservation and spreading awareness about the importance of protecting their habitats. Together, we can ensure that future generations will still have the privilege of witnessing these beautiful creatures in our world. . . . #monarchbutterflies #monarchbutterfly #monarchbutterflygarden #monarchbutterflyhabitat #monarchbutterflysanctuary #monarchbutterflymigration #animalconservation #animalconsciousness #naturelovers #natureconservation #natureconservation #natureconsciousness #animalextinction #extinctioncrisis #insectextinction #butterflyextinction #awareness #awarenesscampaign #weatherawareness #natureawareness #ConservationEfforts #conservationefforts #beautifulcreatures #canadanature #AmericanNature #latinamericannature

WRITING PROMPT Happy Earth Day friends 🌍 Here’s a poem I come back to time and time again: The Woman in the Moon, by Carol Ann Duffy, from her stunning collection The Bees🐝 It’s seemingly about the moon, but as the poet Adrienne Su writes in the @newohioreview, this is ‘a piece about patriarchal power and the destruction of the planet, and its message is urgent’. May we all become awakened to the many ways in which we are conditioned to destroy Mother Earth, and every day find ways to connect with and repair her, which is to repair ourselves, our communities, and be once again in reverence for the place we call home. Here’s a writing prompt: research an animal, insect or plant that is close to extinction. Write a letter to it from its nearby environment or habitat. For example, what would a piece of fruit hanging from a tree want to say to the orangutan that may one day not be around to eat it? What would the ocean miss if whales were to become extinct? How would the jungle speak to a tiger? What are the different names the nearly-extinct creature could be given by its surroundings? #EarthDay #PoetryDaily #DailyPoem #WritingPrompt #DailyWritingPrompt #CreativeWriting #WritingCommunity #Extinction #AnimalExtinction

Your Daily Dose of Clever Hacks and Amazing Facts 🥰 Earth Day is one of the biggest environmental protest movements on the planet. For this year, the theme ‘Planet vs. Plastics’ serves to warn about the threat plastics pose to human and animal health, and demands for a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, a year after US Senator Gaylord Nelson called all Americans to action upon witnessing the effects of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA. Thousands of colleges and universities across the country organized protests to make a stand for a healthy, sustainable Earth. These collective calls prompted the creation into law of the US Environmental Agency and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. The event went beyond the US in 1990, which was participated in by around 200 million people from 141 countries. Since then, each year, around 1 billion people around the world rally to raise awareness regarding climate crisis and bring about behavioral change to protect the environment. This includes concerns about air pollution for factories and freeways, as well as the dangers of habitat loss and extinction of animals. Participation in Earth Day can take many forms, including tree planting, joining ecological initiatives and more. With serious concerns about climate change and environmental degradation, we can all adapt an environmentally-friendly lifestyle through various ways, such as composting, recycling, and repurposing every day, not just on Earth Day. #earthday #earthday2024 #planetearth #environmentalissues #environmentalissuesawareness #planetvsplastics2024 #planetvsplastics #plasticreduction #humanhealth #animalhealth #senatorgaylordnelson #usenvironmentalagency #cleanaircleanwater #endangeredspeciesact #climatecrisis #airpollution #habitatloss #animalextinction #environmentfriendlylifestyle #composting #recycling #repurposing

. . . . #collagedigitalart #tasmania #animalextinction

We wouldn’t be in as deep of a hole on climate change right now if it weren’t for the mainstream media. Their job is to inform the public. They’re supposed to cover the most important things that are happening and effectively communicate what’s going on so people can make well-informed decisions. They’ve failed to effectively communicate that this is an emergency, what is causing it, how it connects to everything we care about, that we already have most of the solutions that we need to address this, who is working to prevent those solutions from being deployed, and that immediate and systemic action is required to address this. In this episode we explain how you can demand more climate journalism — not less. And even better — The Green Elephant has Developed the World’s Most Comprehensive Web-Based Encyclopedia of Eco-Solutions. A CALL TO ACT – nothing less than an epic call to action. Summary Post “Welcome to the Anthropocene” is an article in Population Matters that tells us how humans are affecting wildlife. One of the most important points is where they explain the Anthropocene air, water, and weather. They state that because of industry, agriculture, and fossil fuel use, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has been at its highest levels for millions of years. Adding on, the use of chemicals is turning seas and rivers into dead zones, which will make it difficult for animals to live. Global warming is another cause affecting us. Due to climate change, the glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, and animals are going extinct because of the extreme weather. The article also shows a graph of the earth's population 10,000 years ago and compares the percentage to today. 10,000 years ago, there were 1% humans and 99% wild animals. However, today, there are 32% of humans, 1% of wild animals, and 67% of livestock. This graph shows how much humans have changed and affected the earth's biodiversity. The article ends by presenting a few ways humans can help end and start bringing the number of animals going extinct down. 🦤 #dodo #animalextinction #future

Analysis Post Why do we care about animal extinction? Why are people so concerned with our daily activities? In this article, Kaiho Kunio says that human activities have sped global warming, and led to animal extinction. This statement leads to the author’s bigger purpose in the article, which is the prediction of our future. Kaiho predicts that if humans reduce greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and deforestation, and do not start a nuclear war, a 5-8 % loss of animal species will occur in 2080 CE. He then discusses how humans can prevent a human-caused crisis. Reducing toxic gas emissions, microplastic debris, and forest loss is one recommendation Kaiho states for improving our environment. I thought this article provided great information about our current environmental status and possible future. Analysis Post Why do we need to change our daily activities? Why is preventing animal extinction so important? The article called, “What are some of the biggest threats to wildlife?” by Holly Baines states that balancing the work of wildlife conventions is a key point to improving our current environmental status. Data shows that Latin America and the Caribbean have experienced 94% biodiversity loss since 1970 when they started large-scale farming and the scarcity of resources. The article then discusses how we can solve this issue. While many articles present similar methods such as spreading awareness, preserving habitat, choosing plant-based options, and others. This article suggests contacting your local representative, increasing funding, and fostering collaborations. They share that communicating about the major threats and understanding the balance between biodiversity and human life is the key point to improvement. Summary Post It may be commonly known that the cause of animal extinction is human activity. In the article “An Animal Crisis Caused by Pollution, deforestation, and Warming in the Late 21st Century and Exacerbation by Nuclear War,” the author explains to us the reason for our current environmental status, prediction of the future, and possible methods of solutions. They note that the causes of the issue will change from 2030 to 2090, with pollution and deforestation being the top cause of CO2 emissions. The author's main point is to discuss that global warming, pollution, deforestation, and nuclear conflicts are the causes of the increasing number of endangered animals and that we need to lower and prevent these causes to avoid animal loss. Posted @withregram • @bbcnews The amount of plastic on Earth now outweighs all land and sea creatures currently alive. Plastic has also been found in the guts of creatures living deep in the ocean and even in human placentas. Conventional plastic can take anywhere from 20 to 500 years to decompose, with the average supermarket bag needing around 20 years and a plastic bottle around 450 years. While some plastic can be recycled, globally only about 9% is. So what are the solutions? Tap the link in @BBCNews’s bio to find out. This image of a Chinese pangolin was taken from a Hong Kong shop by Michael Webster, a nature writer and animal activist who published, along with many other books and articles on local wildlife, a piece of writing exposing the rampant wildlife trade in 1970s Hong Kong. He wrote that despite the 1975 Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and Hong Kong's 1976 Animal and Plants (Protection of Endangered Species) Ordinance, it was still easy to buy leopard-skin coats, drink owl soup, and acquire hornbill casques and bird-of-paradise feathers from local shops around the city. Webster would not be the last to speak out. The problem would eventually be brought to London's attention. What went wrong in the intended protection of wildlife? Constructing walls, fences, and barriers along animal migration paths severs access to food, water, and mates for local wildlife. It also traps animals during disasters like floods or fires. As climate impacts intensify, survival could hinge on the ability to escape quickly. And as a bonus, all these fences and barriers are destroying entire ecosystems! In the War on Nature, the wild doesn’t have a chance. One way to respond to such incidents is to call on elected representatives to safeguard wildlife protections like the Endangered Species Act along the border. Click the Bio-link to find both the podcast episode, and A Call to Act, and go to “How to get the most out of contacting your elected representatives.” (You mean you’re not following your elected officials on social media)!!

#LaCorolla🌳 #educandoparalavida💚@wwfspain @teachersforfuturespain #animalextinction

Did you know there are only two northern white rhino's left? The pair is a mother and daughter who live at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.⁣ A fertility breakthrough is offering hope for saving the species from extinction. Scientists have achieved the world's first IVF rhino pregnancy with southern white rhinos, and now they can do it again for the northern whites. There are only two known northern white rhinos left on the planet, but scientists say IVF may save them from extinction. Najin and Fatu, two female rhinos, were born at the Safari Park Dvůr Králové in the Czech Republic. In 2009, they were moved with other rhinos to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya to be in a more-natural habitat for breeding. But, both of the female rhinos have been unable to reproduce naturally, and the last male northern white rhino, Sudan, died in 2018. Scientists are turning to artificial reproduction techniques, like IVF and embryo transfers, to save the nearly extinct subspecies. They have already successfully achieved the world's first IVF rhino pregnancy with southern white rhinos, a closely related subspecies. The next step is to repeat this with northern white embryos. “Every step that we want to use to save the northern white rhino, we first, always do with southern white rhino genetic material, as a proof of concept, because it's much more available,” said Jan Stejskal, director of international projects at Safari Park Dvůr Králové. “It allows us now to turn to northern white rhino embryos and implant them into a surrogate mother of a southern white rhino origin.” 🎧 Listen to the full interview with Jan Stejskal by clicking the link in our bio. #AnimalExtinction #HumanImpact #ClimateChange #Conservation #EndangeredSpecies #MarineLife #Biodiversity #SaveOurPlanet #WildlifeProtection #EnvironmentalAwareness

Approximately 1 million animal and plant species are currently under threat of extinction, many of which can disappear within decades, not years. It’s a record-high number of species under threat. Most major land-based habitats have been lost by at least 20%, mostly since 1900.More than 40% of amphibian species, almost 33% of reef-forming corals and more than a third of all marine mammals are currently threatened. Land development has skyrocketed in the past few decades to accommodate the rapidly growing human population. But persistent human activity including deforestation and land conversion for agriculture and urban development have severely impacted wildlife species. #anumeenacare #nonprofits #animalextinction #endangeredspecies
