“Grace Under Pressure” was the first album @rush made without longtime producer Terry Brown. That fact didn’t precipitate some jarring change in their sound. Sonically, they continued evolving along a creative path they embarked upon at the beginning of the 80’s. Part of that evolution included the use of the latest keyboard technology. Never ones to chase trends in order to fit in, they embraced electronics as a way to spark creativity. But they also took care to focus their art on their contemporary interests, influences, and concerns of the present they were living in. So, the Cold War, technology, dystopian visions of future, personal relationships, alienation, and grief at the loss of a friend all become part of this particular snapshot of the band 40 years ago. No one, as far as I know, has ever confused Rush with synth pop, New Romantics, or electronics. Rush always sounded like themselves. Some fans did not like the new direction the band followed. I myself love Rush in all their guises. Their music has been nurturing my soul ever since I was in the 8th grade. If you’ve never heard this album, I recommend you listen to it from start to finish and make up your own mind about whether or not you dig it. I suspect that “Distant Early Warning” will win you over and you’ll be onside with Rush circa 1984. I’m going to play this loudly and proudly, friends. Enjoy yourselves! Grace Under Pressure is Rush's 10th studio album, released on this day in 1984, on Anthem Records. After touring for their previous album, Signals (1982), came to an end in mid-1983, Rush started working on a follow-up in August. The band decided to not work with long-time producer Terry Brown, who collaborated with Rush since 1974. The new material accentuated the group's change in direction towards a synthesizer-oriented sound like its previous album. After some difficulty finding a suitable producer who could commit, the album was recorded with Peter Henderson. . . The album reached № 4 in Canada, № 5 in the UK, and № 10 on the US Billboard 200. MAX WEBSTER released the album “A MILLION VACATIONS” in March 1979…… Max Webster “the other amazing hard rock band from Canada” never made it in the lower 48 or anywhere for that matter other than their homeland. One could even label them as Rush’s uglier cousin haha. Being label mates on Anthem Records they did tour together a fare amount and Rush even ended up on a Max Webster track called “Battle Scar”. Reasons for not making it outside of Canada perhaps are that they were a little too quirky at times, a little too Canadian at times and a little too all over the place at times stylistically. All that said they are a phenomenal band with great musicianship, great song writing and at times great melodic/pop sensibilities. Leading the charge for the band is legendary guitarist/vocalist Kim Mitchell. He’s such a great player, song writer, performer and definitely the heartbeat of the band. Coming to the rescue with the most excellent lyrics is the infamous Pye Dubois who’s also a true key player in the band. And rounding out the bunch is bass player Dave Myles, drummer Gary McCraken and perhaps the brightest star on “A Million Vacations” the keyboardist/vocalist Terry Watkinson. More synth drenched and less guitar dense than the previous 3 albums “A Million Vacations” delivers a very rockin, moody, emotionally charged, quirky, poppy, proggy sound. Though I like their album “High Class In Borrowed Shoes” the most I still really love “A Million Vacations” and it’s one of my favorite Max Webster records. Some stand out tracks for me are the supposed Canadian hit song “Let Go The Line”, the absolutely stunning “Sun Voices” and the opener rocker “Paradise Skies” to name a few. Just can’t state it enough the emotional atmosphere that Terry Watkinson’s keyboard playing creates on A Million Vacations really makes the album for me. Originally they consisted of Douglas Dillard, Rodney Dillard, Dean Webb, & Mitch Jayne. ‘Roots and Branches’ the album itself, went to #79 on the charts – I believe it’s their only charting album, yet they remain pioneers of country rock & bluegrass. [Morning spins] Rush "Grace Under Pressure" (1984) Original Canadian Pressing Anthem Records • Hard Rock / Prog Rock / Heavy Synth / Classic Rock • So, I'm still awaiting the arrival of that live LP from my fave Canadian band (see last post for full rant). In the meantime though, I thought I'd spin something from my second fave Canadian band: the legendary Rush. • I get it if you don't like Rush. They aren't easy listening. Not everyone is into sci-fi. His voice is awfully high. Heck...art is subjective and technically, you don't even need a reason to like or dislike something. However, I do think the days of certain peers of mine writing off my love for the band as merely a nostalgic product of being raised in an industrial backwards suburb in the east end of the GTA, should be put behind us now. For good. • Firstly, the musicianship is undeniable. Secondly, there's a strong chance that the bands you do like, kinda sound like Rush if you're listening (For eg, I heard mid-80's Rush all over Arcade Fire right from day one. And you seriously don't hear any Rush in BSS? Seriously? OK, but...that's, like, your opinion, man). Most importantly though, if you've ever spent some non-musical time with them, either through an interview or a doc, you'll come to realize that hating Rush is actually impossible, as they are easily the most likeable band ever. In this current climate, where our musical heroes consistently disappoint us, Rush is just...refreshing. The connection their fan base has with them was most beautifully displayed during the standing ovation for their induction into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2013. Although, it was Lifeson's "bla bla bla" speech that made headlines, seeing the familial camaraderie between the band and fans was the real moment of note. I've rarely seen anything so heartwarming in the world of rock 'n' roll. True, I may not listen to the band with the regularity I once did, but when I do, like a fine wine, they truly do get better with age. • Anyway, "Grace Under Pressure" is not one of their better albums 😂😂😂. But the industrial-backwards-town-teen in me loved spinning it this morning. •

Der Title Track vereint alles was Rush zu einer Kultband gemacht hat: Ausgetüftelter Sound gepaart mit musikalischem Können und das faszinierende Nebenher von Prog und Radio. Weltklasse. Som do sabadão, RUSH - Retrospective 1 (1997) Trata-se de uma coletânea que aborda a primeira fase da banda entre 1974 e 1980. Particularmente o meu período preferido, um Rush mais cru, mais progressivo e ao mesmo tempo mais pesado, aqui bem resumido com a representação dos sete primeiros discos de estúdio. Sendo esta a fase que me conquistou quando comecei a ouvir Rush, a faixa blues-rock "Here Again" especificamente, que não está nesta seleção e pertence ao disco debut de "1974", foi amor à primeira ouvida, mesmo já conhecendo e adorando alguns de seus hits oitentistas. He learned to play, he learned to teach, and he landed the role as a guitarist in the “We Will Rock You” musical in Toronto, after winning the slot upon a successful audition with Brian May and Roger Taylor of QUEEN.
