Who are my clients? I work with fiction and nonfiction write who write in every genre under the sun. Authors, journalists, academics, poets, and many creative spirits who can't fall into one single category or even one medium (like me!) My clients range from Nobel Laureates and big-time award winners to folks who haven't written in years but are eager to start again, even just one day a week. Most of my clients are writers BUT the skills I teach apply to creatives no matter your discipline. Here's a gift for the perfectionists out there: A tip to make your writing process more easeful, pleasurable, and less of a slog. Ready? Trust your editor to do their job. In other words, remember that this first version of your work isn't the only version, that other hands and eyes will touch and shape it, AND that you'll have more opportunities to revisit it later as you need. When we're drafting and editing, it's easy to get into the mindset that our writing has to be perfect. It can be hard to remember that what you're writing isn't the final version. So why write like it will be? YES, we want to do our best work, hand in polished copy and write something so good that our editor isn't having to do a ton of legwork. BUT we also have to release some control and trust our editors, too: Do your work to be thorough and catch errors, but trust them to do the same. Your forces combined, your writing is stronger AND you take some pressure off yourself to get it perfect or cover everything about a topic while writing. Do your best, check your work, and trust your editor to do the same. (which is part anxiety release for you, and also part energetics). Sometimes the boundaries we most need to set are with ourselves. We all can probably handle to have stronger boundaries around our time and selves, right? Maybe a needy boss or colleague, a partner who won't leave you alone to write, a friend who texts *nonstop*, etc. But have you looked at the boundaries that you're setting with you? It's easy to let our attention drift when we write, our hands reaching for our phones and our cursors clicking over to our email tabs. The result? Less time spent writing, AND a shame spiral about wasting time to boot. Why not break out of that cycle and give yourself back the time you promised yourself? Boundaries with yourself don't need to carry shame or judgment: You're setting them with love, just as you do with your partner or friend. But they also give you some clear expectations for how you want your writing time to look. When your writing is in flow, it automatically moves to the center of your life. But how do you get there? The answer might surprise you. Your creative success mirrors the pleasure and play in your creative practice (or alternately, mirrors your grind and burnout). Why? If you treat your writing like it's just another to do in your day, if your creativity isn't sacred, ritualized, and special, and is just as important in your schedule as brushing your teeth, going to meetings, or answering email, the kind of success you'll experience will look like that. Yes, your creative success may very well come, but you'll find that it probably will feel like more of the same: more box checking, more to dos, more starting and ending without much fanfare before moving on to the next set of boxes to check. But when your creativity is pleasurable? When you've built a life where creative time is sacred, where play is a holy act, where you're intentional about the energy you're breathing in and out through your work? THEN you can actually bring in the kind of creative success you want: The success you experience will look like the energy you've brought to the table. Creativity is about letting go as much as it is letting in. Here's a practice to help you get started: So much of leaning into a pleasurable creative life is about letting go: -Of other people's expectations and ideas of success -Of your own internalized messaging about what it means to be successful and supported, and how you express both -Of conditioning about progress, productivity, and what you should be going -Of doubts in your own magic, trusting yourself and your ability to let it unfold -Of the belief that your pleasure has no place in your work Pick one this week and start to notice your internal dialogue around that belief or perspective. Does it align with your ideal, creative life (and if not, why not?) Bonus round: Start to think about how you can reframe that self-talk. Each time a limiting belief comes up, imagine how you can counter it, or rephrase it, to mirror the life you desire (this can also be helpful to do with a friend!) What does being a successful writer mean to you? Success isn’t measured in awards or external praise, though that can be part of it. Finding success as a writer starts from inside you: when you find the process to be a joy, when the writing flows smoothly, when you’re proud of what you wrote. Whatever happens after that is just gravy But without the peace and pride in yourself and your process, external success can feel real empty. Sustainable success as a writer starts with falling back in love with your writing. And when you love the process of writing and celebrate the product of your writing, it amplifies the good feelings of success you attract. And when you come from that good feeling place, you invite more success in. Your writing practice is more than just word count or completed drafts. Here's what I do to honor every part of my practice: ✨start with daydreaming, mapping out ideas, sketching, and just generally wandering around in my own thoughts. Maybe, I'll write them out however they appear (I like bubble charts and messy outlines), or I just let ideas percolate. ✨then I do the work that happens on my computer, and remember: this is more than word count! It might mean editing, rereading source material, outlining, or yes, drafting new words. This is why I set paragraph and time goals usually rather than word count goals! ✨And finally, I celebrate what I did, whether I outlined a new article or wrote a page of my next chapter. Celebration anchors in our achievements, gives us permission to acknowledge what we’ve already done, and that makes it so much easier to keep making progress. I promise this is an easier, more pleasurable way to write than trying to wrestle words out of yourself to meet a word count. As always, starting and ending with pleasure and play is the key to unlocking your best writing life. Give this a try this week and let me know what you think! In November 2016, there were four Ai Weiwei shows in NYC, shortly after he was released from being restricted to travel abroad. One of the installations featured broken spouts and was part of an exhibition titled ‘Ai Weiwei 2016:Roots and Branches.’ These broken spouts were from antique Chinese porcelain teapots. While I can’t recall all the details of the exhibition, I distinctly remember that prior to attending, I had been avidly following Ai Weiwei’s work on YouTube and in various readings. I recognized that he employs art as a means to provoke and raise radical questions within our society. He advocates for minority groups, refugees, and the stateless, championing the cause of freedom. These insights and values resonate deeply with many of us. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to witness his show firsthand. Had a dream last night that two minor figures from my PhD days pulled me aside in a version of my house that’s messy and overwhelming to tell me I never really fit in and ‘it was better for everyone when I stopped trying to get a job as a tenure track professor.’ Then my amazing VA, and other folks from my current life swooped in and said all the ways that they valued me, and helped me clean up the stuff that felt overwhelming. I don’t often feel overwhelmed in my work because I’ve put systems and practices in place (the same ones I teach my clients!) that make my writing life manageable and pleasurable. But it was so reaffirming to feel seen and supported, and to know the support is there when I need it! Go where you’re wanted and thrive, however “nontraditional” a career it may be. I promise it’s the most affirming, amazing choice and the amount of growth you experience is out of this world! I’ve chosen my path in large part because I want to share my own magic and the magic of food and nature as a writer, and to share the magic of writing with you. This was The Dillards sixth studio album; they are an American Bluegrass & country band from Salem, Missouri. Originally they consisted of Douglas Dillard, Rodney Dillard, Dean Webb, & Mitch Jayne. ‘Roots and Branches’ the album itself, went to #79 on the charts – I believe it’s their only charting album, yet they remain pioneers of country rock & bluegrass. A lot of beautiful tracks including ‘Forget Me Not’, ‘One A.M’, ‘Last Morning’, ‘Sunny Day’ & more ☀️🌾I read they were among the first to electrify their instruments in the mid 1960s.
