A few photos of my recent activities 😊🤩 1/ Conference on quantum computing I always like to be up to date with the current trends in science. Quantum computing seems to be one of the emerging trends, but in my opinion it will take a couple of years until it will be more widespread. It also doesn’t seem to be a magical solution to all the problems but rather a great solution to some very specific problems. And what about life sciences? Well, there were zero examples of its use in life sciences during the conference so I definitely consider the title a click bait haha the closest that it gets to life sciences is protein structure prediction. In very specific cases it can be better than AlphaFold. 2/ One of the comments of my supervisor on my Master’s thesis. It cracks me up a bit every time I read it haha. Definitely need to work on my writing skills. The good news is that I finished my first draft and now am just polishing it. 3/ One of the synthetic biology groups that I’m part of has weekly seminars that I stopped attending a while back, but decided to join recently! It was ok, but I was hoping for more bioinformatics, and it was mostly (only?) wet lab stuff. 4/ Eurovision baby, who was watching it? Whenever I review a book, the term, “reads like fanfiction” is not a compliment. This isn’t to say that fanfiction is poorly written; on the contrary, I’ve read some fanfictions that were just as well written as original works and have kept me up at night. What I mean by this is that if a published work that an author is getting paid for reads like a copy of another author’s work, it’s not well written and it borders on plagiarism. Think of it like when a student takes a paper they stole off the internet and from their friend and then changes a few sentences or terms to “sound different”. It’s just not their work and when it comes to reading original stories, I want to read something original; not a knock-off. There is a reason that fanfiction is allowed as long as no one is paying for it and unfortunately, books that “read like fanfiction” have changed just enough details to get around copyright law. It’s like those “generic” Disney movies that have different titles, character names, but the designs and plots of the movies are still the same. You see where I’m going with this? But how can we tell if it’s closer to fanfiction or if it’s simply inspired by another work? Inspiration is taking a general idea, aesthetic, or maybe some similar tropes from one work and an original idea is brought about by that inspiration. If it’s inspired, you can spot the elements of the inspirational text, but there are more original elements to the story/characters/world than there are from the inspired one. If it “reads like fanfiction”, then there are more elements that seem to be lifted off the original pages and inserted into the new story than there are original elements. What are your opinions? Where I accidentally ended up on a train to Montana with 2 of my exes (they were going there on purpose). I had to explain to my mom what happened in a text, and I still remember the quote, that went something like “I had to grow up someday, it just ended up sooner than I thought”. San Diego has always been financially insulated from the center of the country. It creates a sort of time travel when coming back or going to a place like St. Louis, where economic assistance programs and outreach have been minimal since the great depression. Or the failure of President Johnsons "Great Society" initiative in 1964. Places where the buildings show their years. Proudly or sadly. Vs Southern California. A place where the light and color itself gives meaning and beauty to things barely punished by nature. The only gray days promise a summer soon. But this photo haunts me. And has for years. A humble home in Normal Heights. And in clear view, the degradation of America's standard of living. While I personally have been fortunate enough to exist as I always have, the shrinkage of working class wealth is no longer hiding. But the real thing missing... the only thing really gone from this picture, is optimism. Because I feel that even living on the floor is bearable when you can see an ever increasing intrusion of light. The idea that every day, a little more air comes into the room. And that one day, a clear path for this place will be evident. This particular dwelling has an approximate build date of 1935. Few scant years before war. And is likely more than not, was already in significant disrepair following WW2 as rationing had made simple repairs impossible for the masses. Yet here it was circa 1968... looking as perfect as the same summer day. Just a few years after the end of the world. The building still stands with little or no structural changes. But is now 3 studio apartments. One being the garage. The bottom photo is from before that conversion. The dead lawn holds up cars full time now. Until it's torn down, there's always some hope the paint will come back. The once kaleidoscopic urban landscape, spinning vividity while the motor hummed along with the radio in consonant tones. Our own small dwellings, the makings of core memory perfection. A nation of hopefuls. a super short story that I wrote a short time ago . the second picture is an artwork by @hayleemorice that I used for inspo It was over. Everything was over. She had failed and now others would have to live with the consequences. The light faded around her or maybe she faded from the light. She wasn’t sure anymore. The pain was going away now. Everything felt like it was suspended in time. She was alone. No one would find her here, or that’s what she hoped. Maybe no one would ever know about the mess up that had led to this. The tree continued to grow through her chest, slowly killing her. Her blood pooled on the ground around her. It seeped into the ground, feeding the ever growing tree, making it stronger and taller. Everything was dark now. Except it wasn’t. She was dreaming. That’s right, a dream of clouds and oceans. Of games and laughter. Slowly the dream got more and more faint, falling gradually into blackness. She was falling asleep, that’s all. A deep, dreamless sleep. A restful sleep. That’s what she needed. She was so tired. Every once in a while I think of the time V. S. Naipaul said, “I read a piece of writing and within a paragraph or two I know whether it is by a woman or not. I think [it is] unequal to me”, and am freshly outraged (and filled with pity). He was rightly called out by many writers at the time for his misogyny, with Booker prize-winning novelist Keri Hulme declaring, “Many thousand women writers both outrank, and will out-survive, this slug.” I was reminded of this living-in-my-head-rent-free quote when Sandeep shared two sentences from two different books he’s reading in which the female characters were both “gliding across the floor”. Now we all know there’s no such distinction as the wince-making Naipaul claimed. There’s only good or bad writing, period. Eros lays dormant in a winter storm. • • I find him on top of a hill alive but unmoving — He’s laying silent among the storm. I almost don’t want to bother him. But I have to get him warm. I look into my bag, and I find two matches. I light one, and hold it close to him — I can see his face clearly now. His curly hair and long lashes — he’s grinning, both with his teeth and with his eyes. The match goes out, and the wind stops. I look around for something to help; And I find firewood. It’s as if, it were set there just for him. Before he ended up in this apathetic wasteland. I pile each piece, one top of another. And with my second match I light it — It burns with a passion melting what’s around. And the sky has cleared, it’s stopped snowing now. I feel warm. And I look again to see him glowing. I lay down next to him, and when I find my hand in his; I’m reminded of when his laughter reached my soul. And when those same cold hands, held my face. His laughter? His hand? I’ve never before met this man. But he’s familiar. A distant spark; an old flame. And I wanted him to wake. I needed to look him in the eyes; Feel his warmth; Know his name. So I tap his shoulder, and I pull his hand. I try all I can to wake this unconscious man. But he stays there, still and sleeping; Like the scorching winter storm, that was laid to bed. I even felt Spring, after we met. And I grin, with the same lack of love and luster from where I had found him. This song would boom through the house. In the evening hours when Dad had just gotten home and it was summer, the light would paint yellow window silhouettes against the odd art and smoke aged seaside decor. And the floors rumbled under the bare-footfalls of an army of uncouth children. My father was and is still a closet audiophile. And though money was non-existent, his work as a telephone repairman had hidden benefits. He could improvise. In this bizarre upright book shelf of a house, were wired over 10 rooms and the backyard. Speakers mounted in high corners. All in proper bandpass boxes or sealed cabinets. Mostly found stuff. But pretty good once sorted. In the old living room (it literally looked like the simpsons setup), there was a hi-fi from the 1960s that my Dad had modified. And behind it was a row of switches like in a missle silo. Industrial gray block switches. On each one, letters. "BR1, LRM, BD3......." About 10 or 12 of them. And if you flipped them all up, every room became a 25 watt rms variation. Music flowing through the house and out into the street. The entire house was a stereo. And you would hear the vinyl popping from down the hall a microsecond after it was just clear. Creating micro delays in the tones as you walked through the changing sound. As though you were hearing Brubeck live. The house replicating the acoustic effects of a club with high ceilings. None of the boys ever complained. It was simply part of the day. We continued in our own madness, never slowing, while the tired walls and floors shuttered to the frontline percussion. To be sad, angry, and content at the same time. I miss the memories, but I can’t relive them. Yet I’d say I created better ones, so I don’t need yours anymore. The songs we listened to are on replay, but for reasons that are only my own. Sometimes I dance, but when I think about you I skip them. I miss Tuesday, but I hate Tuesday. It’s too early in the week. I cry on Saturdays now. For some reason the tears aren’t as salty. It’s my fault because it’s easier that way. I’ll apologize because sorry is my favorite word.
