Getting this out ahead of my 12+ hour drive tomorrow. Well, April wasn't exactly a stellar month for my writing goals. 50% isn't terrible, but it's not great either. I also acknowledge that I'm my own worst critic, lol. Just ran out of time as I got caught up getting my house ready to sell. Still, big victory in getting my next book, #4, is with the editor and she's excited to begin working on the next big chapter for Jack Wartnose. That helps keeping the release date for Oct 2024. Also glad I finally updated-the-back of the book segment for my books. The monthly writers meet up. We were a small group of five but it was a cozy session. We got to talk, socialise and do some writing. Today’s writing exercise was freewriting on any topic or dream for 25 mins, non- stop. No editing, no thinking, just the pen to the paper and write. It was quite a good exercise and I wrote six pages in my notebook. It’s better to write by hand for this exercise. Then we read to the group what we wrote (this part is optional as some people are private. After the break, we worked on or rather edited what we had written. When I needed Basil. I’ve started herbs around the top of my kitchen, as I told you last week. Well this weekend Zach added a shelf to the dead space living above the sink. I think I love it as much as the one in the window. I know I love the smell of fresh earth and plants that have taken over the room. It’s similar to opening your windows during a rain shower. It’s grounding and I’m a firm believer that world could use more of that. I’ve never been able to keep plants alive because I forget to water them or I water them too much out of fear I’ll forget. It’s a vicious cycle really. But I do the same thing when it comes to getting water in for myself. So I’m not surprised. I’ve decided I can learn though. This past year, I’ve learned a lot of things I thought could never do. And honed some skills that were once a necessity for some people. I published Basil’s first story, which I thought would kill me. I started collaborating with friends and found beautiful romance stories I never knew I had in me. I’ve been learning to cook and so far, no one has died-progress. I even make my own bread now. Btw if you have never tried that before, there is nothing more fulfilling. All this to say, it started with some Basil. A who to be exact. My novel Someone’s Always Watching came at a time when I didn’t have confidence or believe in myself. When I worried too much about the thoughts and opinions of others. However, he taught me that I can do hard things, I can learn new things and other peoples opinions are also just “things” sometimes. So, naturally I added Basil to the shelf because he deserves a spot there among the new parts of my life. And I will smile every time I look at it and remember THE Basil was born a mixture of both my grandfathers who are no longer with me but still, in a way, encouraging me to try something new. I have written 10,016 words in two and a half days 🤯 Admittedly, in my last 1,000 words or so, I hit a wall, and my (re)writing got a bit lazy 😅 but, I'm pretty dang impressed with my efforts the last few days. I have four more chapters & an epilogue to go (roughly 21,000 words! If I keep writing at this pace, it'll be done in four days!) Hi friends, So as of this week, Bolen books in Victoria have pulled my work from shelves. This doesn’t come as a shock, as my books never sold a copy at that store, partly due to being stuck relatively hidden on a back shelf where even I had a hard time finding them. This kind of brings to a close, at least for now, of my physical book experiment. Asa self published author, having books in physical format means that I have to spend the money ahead of time and then cross my fingers hoping that they sell. It’s a lot of pressure and anxiety, honestly. This time last year, I had books in stores in Nanaimo, Duncan, Victoria, and Seattle. Now, I’m back down to just Nanaimo. Once I sell out of stock here in Nanaimo I doubt I’ll continue because it’s a lot of stress on me. This hasn’t ever been my full time job and I have no dreams even of that changing. Writing books is such a joy for me, I don’t want to stop, but the industry behind all of this is not really enjoyable for me, especially with where I’m at. I really appreciate all of you who have purchased my books in the past and I really appreciate that people are out there that appreciate what I’m writing and are interested in it. There are so many amazing writers out there that this often feels like I’m just shouting into the dark. Luckily, I’m happy writing even if no one reads it. My goal over the next few years is to finish my Subatomic Serenade trilogy, and a few other projects I have going on. Should be a ton of fun and I can’t wait to share that all with you. I know I say this a lot, but please leave reviews, on Amazon or on good reads, bookbub, or Storygraph. Reviews really make a difference when people go to make an online purchase and more than that, it can make an authors day when someone takes a few minutes to leave a thoughtful review on their work. My grandfather on my dad’s side died in 1978. I never met him, but I’ve felt connected to him nonetheless. He was a soldier in WWII, a columnist for his local newspaper, and the owner of a nursery. I feel like I’ve inherited my love of plants, writing, and reading from that side of the family, and for that, I’m beyond grateful. I have his Bible and wallet. Inside his wallet was a comic strip with a building plan for a bookshelf. The newspaper is dated 1964. That means he likely had this in his wallet with plans to someday build it for nearly 15 years. Last week, I remembered that comic strip in his wallet, and I decided I would build it. I took woodworking in high school, but it’s been a long time since I worked on a carpentry project by myself. I worked on it all weekend (with B’s help when I needed advice or an extra hand), but I did it! It’s finished and in my office. It’s nothing extravagant, but I love it. I’m proud to have made something my grandfather wanted to build. I feel closer to him now, and in some small way, I hope it honors him. I’ll always think of him and his love of books when I look at it. Another thing this project has reminded me of is how short life is and how we often put off doing things, thinking that we’ll have more time in the future. Don’t wait, friend. Start now. Play.
