When something is broken and no longer perfect, it gets repaired with laquer. * 💫 * The damage is no excuse to throw something away, and there’s no aim to deny that there was a break or a split or a chip off, instead the repair made by laquer - often in gold or silver - is visible. * 💫 * Then; over the years the laquer repair may get less apparent as the colour fades away. Perhaps new repairs must be made. It’s a process of constant change, which holds not only an acceptance of that change, but also an idea of added value, an idea that the beauty of the item is getting enhanced. * 💫 * And, of course, if we apply this kind of thinking on ourselves and our lives; those scars, those mistakes made, the losses or any devastation we’ve gone through, is not the end of the world. I believe one of my first experiences with Richard Serra was over 20 years ago, an immersive experience in the Guggenheim Bilbao. Ever since I keep bumping into his works all over Europe. An aspect of my work that I’m particularly enjoying at the moment is the destruction of pieces to be repurposed ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This piece has helped me to explore some ideas around construction and glazing. However I didn’t think it was a strong enough final piece so I’ve kept some larger pieces for reference and will use the rest as grog/inclusions ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I used a combination of textured black/crank/porcelain clays and only two glazes. The reaction of the glazes over different clays caused interesting colours variations ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following images show the sorting process when I sieved the lumps to separate the tiny particles. While hammering the chunks of fired clay between layers of newspaper, I noticed the interesting texture that was left behind.
