Books are here! Bigwig's Illustrated Guide To Birds just arrived, and I am beyond excited to share it with you all. So much gratitude to David Pischke @mookluke and @tolsunbooks for believing in this project and bringing it to life. I wanted so much for Bigwig's love of life and birds to live on. Holding this book in my hands is a dream come true. When the pandemic happened, we were hunkered down in North Port. The most majestic sunrise I had ever experienced took place every morning in my back yard. Bigwig and I would sit on the living room floor in front of our sliding glass door and watch the dark become light to the sound of an orchestra. This was how we began each day, with our radio tuned to the classical station and the 6 AM daily Sunrise Symphony faithfully choreographing the morning dance of birds, wild rabbits, alligators, and bobcats. To connect with what is wild in the world is to connect with the divine. We have so much to learn from the wildlings we share our lives with. I loved working on this book with Bigwig by my side. They followed her everywhere as she picked flowers and braided them into garlands, explored the woods behind her house, or just sitting and talking to them. I’ve always wanted to know more about birds and be able to identify them but have always been dubious as to whether reading about them is the best way to learn. Reading 300 pages on endangered bird species in the UK doesn’t make it that much easier to be able to spot them, to have a clear understanding of what they look like or what they sound like. For that reason, I was a little dubious when I picked up Wild Air. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be my sort of thing but James Macdonald Lockhart is SO passionate about the topic and has such a beautiful writing style that he makes even the most nondescript birds come to life. He gives the birds so much personality and comes at his subject with such a fresh perspective. My favourite line in the book was ‘If, like some human burps, you could smell a woodcock’s croack, it would smell, I think, of mud and march and mulch’. I would never even think to wonder what a woodcock’s burps would smell like and yet in doing so, it adds a whole new dimension to the tiny little bobbing birds with long beaks. Lockhart spends hours and days in all sorts of inhospitable places to better understand birds. This book is a celebration of Britain’s environment as much as it is the birds that live in it. I loved how contagious Lockhart’s enthusiasm is and this particularly shines through when he takes his son on his twitching adventures with him and he gets the bug too. Having read this, maybe I need to stand corrected. 📖 Do you like to draw? My niece loves to draw. I just love to do it with her. KAWAII BIRDIES by Jen Budrock has been fun for the both of us. So I can say it's fun for all ages. We had an enjoyable and educational experience learning how to draw birds! The clear instructions definitely made it easy to follow along. The variety of cute birds were certainly inspiring to draw. A little peak into The Best Nest Contest. The illustrations throughout are designed to keep the book engaging. The style evolves, keeping each page interesting for children, with a mixture of 'life like' illustration, like this Blackbird, and some of my Geometric Birds. I wrote it aiming at 5 year olds, using varied but simple words for independent reading.
