The subject of this post is sad. It is about child death in the 18th Century. These two gravestones are for sets of triplets, and twins (If I’m interpreting them correctly). The gravestones read: “Here lies the body of three children born at a birth. Sons of Mr. Thomas Bourne and Mrs. Susanna. October 30, 1776.” and “In memory of two infant sons born Septr 3rd 1790. One died 6th, the other 9th, of the same month. Sons of Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Betty Bourne.“ Child birth was the most common cause of death for women at this time. The rate of infant deaths was staggering. The physical and mental consequences of giving birth for women and their families are difficult for me to phathom. Over the years, while giving tour & talks about the 18th Century, visitors often mention that people usually died young in this time period. This is a misconception. On average, people died young, but that average is greatly swayed by the young ages of women and their children. Only a little artistic filtering for this photo of Greyfriars Kirkyard and the view to Edinburgh Castle earlier tonight. I was out with a lovely group of French students for a tour which started at 9pm, way past my usual bedtime. But the weee great fun. Thanks to the people on here who suggested I should always carry cash. I paid the donation before their tour and added some of tomorrow’s school group’s donation too. And my bank card melted again. I now have to pop in to feed the machine on days when I don’t have a tour. This fine marker for five month old Aaron Buckland was carved by relative Peter Buckland of Manchester CT on Portland Brownstone. By the middle 1780s, Peter Buckland had begun to embrace the baroque stylings of the Portland/Middletown school, shifting away from elements from Gershom Bartlett/Joseph Johnson which had influenced him for the previous decades of his career. He particularly looked at Thomas Johnson III and William Crosby for inspiration at this time, the latter with whom he would form a partnership during the 1790s (partially to source stone). This marker, while small, is nonetheless very elaborate for an infant, featuring his feathered upswept wings and relief given in the lynette features. Heres a very fine slate marker featuring the classic momento mori imagery of the Deaths Head, so widespread in Eastern Massachusetts. This marker is amongst the earliest dated Boston markers in Eastern Connecticut and is especially noteworthy as it appears in the Cleveland Cemetery of Canterbury Connecticut, the only stone from Boston in the entire town. The stone may be by Nathaniel Emmes, or another currently unknown stonecutter of Boston. The slate appears to be of the same purple tinged type used by the Lamsons, also used by other carvers. The borders are finely detailed scrolls and waves, with a large toothed scowling winged skull embracing the grim reality of death. Fair warning, some gruesome descriptions ahead! Hillside Cemetery is a nestled within a busy section of Madison NJ. It lives up to it's name- after entering the gates, you can cross the Spring Garden Brook and make your way upwards to the summit for a nice view of the burial grounds and Main Street. The top of the hill was the site of the Presbyterian Church, with the oldest graves belonging to the members and leaders of the parish. It was the incline of the land, however, that would play a part in a horrific event that the cemetery is most known for. After a violent storm in August 1902, the brook flooded. The flash flood was so forceful that over 50 graves were washed out and down into the surrounding area. Townsfolk awoke that morning to the sight of caskets and loose bodies adrift in the streets. Photos in the newspapers showed crowds of onlookers at the awful scene. Efforts were made to return the departed to their places, but, due to decay, only 30 of the bodies were able to be identified. One witness, who aided the clean up, a man named Dugald MacDougal, was reported to hear an "awful, hair-raising noise" coming from the bushes. There, he found one of the misplaced corpses sitting upright. The sound he heard was the wind blowing through the deceased's exposed vocal chords. "I never heard a sound like it before or since." I didn't hear anything like that on my visit- just the cars passing by and a very playful murder of crows in an old tree above. But it was hard not to imagine the echo of the breeze in a dead throat. Morbid, I know, especially on such a nice spring day. A fine, elaborate marker of Bolton Schist by Josiah Manning of Windham CT, amongst my favorite markers by his hands. The lunette is chalk full of detail, note the scaled wings, a trait used by Josiah on his most elaborate works, as well as the crown of righteousness surrounded by layered clouds (which also flank underneath the wings). All of these designs are carved in very deep relief, no less. The stone shape itself is very different from his usual work, carved around coils, and borders. Note the wheat pollen in the shoulders, and the Gershom Bartlett inspired clover rosette directly under the winged soul. These images are from out east on the plains of rural Wyoming. The town of Burns is located approximately 30 miles east of Cheyenne and the cemetery itself is 1 mile south of the town. To be honest, I didn’t find much to photograph in the cemetery proper but I thought the gates were quite photogenic. My partner always makes sure she photographs the gates of the burial grounds we visit. If for no other reason than to help her to remember which cemetery is which. Smart woman. I, however, mostly skip imaging the gates and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to call her to ask questions like “what was the name of that spot that had all of those lichen covered military headstones, you remember, it was the place that had the trash fire over near the receiving vault”? or something like “which graveyard was it that had the deer bones next to the caretakers shed, you know, it had all those crabapples in the Woodmen of the World section”? She goes back to her meticulously arranged images, finds the gate or sign she diligently documented and BAM, I can properly name my photos. "Sacred Land" During a return journey from northern California, I paused at the historic site of the Manzanar Concentration Camp, a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in American history. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Owens Valley, about 230 miles north of Los Angeles, this image captures the solemnity of the burial grounds section of the camp. As I stood in this sacred space, I observed in quiet remembrance as the wind gently ruffled the trees and grass. Here's a very early marker by the Hook & Eye man, Gershom Bartlett. This being amongst his earliest works, and is likely his first outside of Ellington where he lived for several years when it was still part of East Windsor. While in the area, he began cutting his first gravestones (this stone was carved between 1747-1748), though he previously lettered a small number of his father's stones while working under him, those being found in Bolton. These very early stones feature no mouth, a more abstract attempt at vine borders, slits for eyes, and wings that bear a far closer resemblance to a childs artistic depiction of dreadlocks. Also note the whirling rosettes in the finals, inspired by Joseph Johnson, of whom he was heavily influenced by in his formative years. This marker is in the North Cemetery of Somers Connecticut, a town where he is only represented by three stones, two of which are of his early type. The Mercedes Grave of Linden Raymond Tse, age fifteen, dreamed of owning a Mercedes one day. His wish was granted posthumously. After his tragic passing, his family commissioned a granite replica of a Mercedes Benz 240 Diesel to be forever parked outside of his mausoleum. It was paid for by Ray’s older brother Dave, and sculpted by Rock of Ages Granite company in Vermont. The stone car is exquisitely detailed, and said to be an exact replica of the actual vehicle, down to the most minuscule details. Doors, lights, grill, tire treads, and windshield wipers are all present. Even the personalized name plates on the front and back feature delicately carved screws. The only parts left out are side mirrors and hood ornament, to prevent theft and damage. If you ever visit Ray, be sure to take a few moments to remember a life cut short, and to appreciate a truly stand-out memorial piece.
