; Last week, we buried 2 of our puppies 😔 Bluedear & Tandi (family pet names) At their burial sites, we planted coconuts to remind us that though they are not with us, we will always remember them and that their coconuts will grow to become beautiful trees that'll give us food, shelter and many more..... The coconut tree is an important aspect of our lives in the island, it is our trademark, it signifies our connection to our 'laukele', to the 'one' which is the soul of our 'fenua'. The coconut represents our roots as 'tino ote fenua mote moana', people of the 'laukele' & 'tai' 😌 It had become a custom for our family that every pet we bury, we plant a coconut, to remind us that animals are also important & are a part of the circle of life, & eventhough they have passed, they will remain as precious 'coconut trees' binding us to our 'laukele' 😊 & providing for us daily x Rest well lil pups, we will take care of your brother Tikitam 😘🥺 #Customs #BurialSite #IslandPets #OurGuardians #OurPups #DogPets #Tandi #Bluedear #IslandLiving #IslandLife #CoconutTrees #Tuvalu #Professional

In 1997, an excavation at a prehistoric cemetery in Irkutsk, Russia, revealed the remains of a pregnant woman who lived in the middle Holocene in a hunter-gatherer community some 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. In 2012, Angela Lieverse, an archaeologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, was revisiting a box of bones and realized that there were duplicate tiny bones. The woman had been thought to be pregnant with a single baby, but actually they were twins, turning this discovery into the oldest confirmed evidence of twins in history, as well as one of the earliest examples of death during childbirth. . A 3,700-year-old woman pregnant with a near-term baby was found in a cemetery near Aswan, in southern Egypt, by a joint Italian-American excavation. The baby was placed head-down, which suggests that death may have been caused by childbirth. . Images: Remains of the pregnant woman with an unborn child. In 2010, the remains of a woman with a head wound, suggestive of trepanation, an ancient form of skull surgery, and a fetus between her legs were unearthed in the town of Imola, in northern Italy. The woman’s skeleton dates back to the 7th–8th centuries CE and, given the position of the fetal bones (head and upper part of the body below the pelvic cavity, legs inside), it is thought that it was a post-mortem fetal extrusion or coffin birth, that is, when a baby is forcibly expelled from its mother’s body after her death. . Ibbankatuwa site ( 750-400 BC) will look like an underwhelming site to visit but knowing the background behind it will add value to your experience. Ibbankatuwa is a protohistoric burial site and is considered to be the biggest burial site of the Megalithic tradition discovered up to now in this country. Protohistory is the period between prehistory and written history, during which a culture or civilization has not yet developed writing, but other cultures that have developed writing have noted the existence of those pre-literate groups in their own writings. The main attribute of this period is the massive change it underwent due to the introduction of technological and cultural innovations that were brought by the use of fired clay utensils molded on the potter's wheel, metal implements and the introduction of agriculture into the human livelihood. This is a cost burial site, where chambers are made using flat rocks with clay pots containing human ash. Archeologists believe that tombs found together in close proximity belong to a single clan or family. Some chambers contained necklaces made of mineral beads ( some minerals not found in Sri Lanka natively and are believed to be imported ) and rarely beads painted in gold. The artifacts found in the site are not displayed there but instead are displayed at the archaeology museum of the Kelaniya University. A journey to Egypt's past🏺👑 One day we went on a trip to the Valley of the Kings at Luxor. We booked a private transfer with an local tour guide. The drive from El Queseir to Luxor took approx. 4-5 hours. Of course, the temperatures at the desert were very high, but the trip was worth it. The Valley of the Kings includes over sixty tombs. The area was part of the ancient city of Thebes and was the burial site of almost all the kings (pharaohs) of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties (1539–1075 BCE), from Thutmose I to Ramses X.The walls were in many cases covered with sculptured and painted scenes depicting the dead king in the presence of deities, especially the gods of the underworld, and with illustrated magical texts similar to those found in funerary papyri. We visited the tombs of Siptah, Tausert/Setnakht and Sety (the second), which were very impressive. So, I can recommend this cultural site to everyone, who is interested in Egypt's past. #valleyofthekings #siptah #tausert #setnakht #sety2 #king #desert #archaeology #tomb #monument #pharaoh #burialsite #kings #dynasties #wall #sculpture #painting #god #underworld #funeraryart #daytrip #egypt #luxor #history #culture #egyptlovers #sightseeing #culturalsite #thisisegypt #egypttravel

In 1991, the body of a man who had been buried with a flat stone wedged in his mouth was found in a Roman Britain burial site in Northamptonshire, but it was not until 2017 that archaeologists and researchers from Historic England examined the remains. The man was facing down, which suggests that he was seen as odd or a threat. In other Roman-period burials, missing parts of the body were replaced by rocks and stones, which could be a possibility, but they also found evidence of an infection, which could have been produced by cutting his tongue while alive and causing his death. . In 2006, a mass grave of 16th-century plague victims was excavated on the Venetian island of Nuovo Lazzaretto. Archaeologists found, to their surprise, a woman that had been apparently buried with a brick in her mouth and who is now known as the vampire of Venice. According to Matteo Borrini, the project leader, people in the Middle Ages were susceptible to believing in vampires and witches, mostly because the process of decomposition was not understood (hair and nails keep growing, and fluids may come out of the mouth and nose). The brick is thought to be an exorcism technique used on suspected vampires in Europe at the time. . Image: The skull of the “vampire of Venice” with a brick stuck in its jaw. The following three photos rediscovered in the Safe Harbor archives were likely taken by Cadzow or a fellow team member during their 1930-1932 field survey of areas that would be affected by the rising waters due to the Holtwood and Safe Harbor hydroelectric dams. Cadzow's survey recorded a fascinating variety of petroglyphs and Native American sites in the Safe Harbor area, many of which are now underwater. His findings are recorded in his Safe Harbor Report No. 1 and Safe Harbor Report No. 2. . What makes these images unique is that I've read both documents, and these photos are not contained there. Please note that the captions are written exactly as found on the photographs. . Slide 1: The second image, labeled as #502, says, "Ancient Algonkian warrior found near Shenks Ferry." . Slide 2: The first photograph, labeled as #501, says, " #501: Indian graves found near Safe Harbor." It was taken on July 30, 1930. . Slide 3: The third image, labeled #524, displays several pieces of Native American pottery with a difficult to read caption in cursive that might say, "Sumer focus as B6." Let me know what you think the photo's caption says. . . . #unchartedlancaster #safeharbor #safeharborarchives #lancasterhistory #nativeamerican #burialsite #algonkian #donaldcadzow #1930 #blackandwhitephotography #burial #lancastercounty

The Necropoli dei Bambini is a 1,500-year-old burial site in Lugnano, Italy. Since excavations began in the 1980s, archaeologists have found the remains of over 50 babies and toddlers, and a rather exceptional 10-year-old who had been buried with a stone in its mouth. In the mid 5th century CE, there was a malaria outbreak around Lugnano in Teverina. Researchers think the stone was meant to contain the disease and prevent the child from coming back from the dead. Other children had been buried with raven talons, frogs, and puppies cut in half, which led researchers to suggest that there was a ritualistic component in these burials and that late Romans were highly superstitious. . The Ahom Moidams, the royal burial grounds of the Ahom Dynasty ~ Nestled amidst lush greenery, these ancient mounds stand tall in Charaideo, Assam, as silent witnesses of the state's regal history. Established by the Tai-Ahoms who believed that their rules were incarnations of the almighty, these mounds are similar to tombs world over. They contain several artefacts along with the royal remains, including royal insignia, jewellery, pottery, and personal belongings. Though moidams have been found in different parts of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Burma etc., none are as distinguished in scale or concentration as the Ahom Moidams. On Imbolc night three years ago, I walked under the starriest of skies from the standing stones at Llandbedr, nestled beneath a solitary oak at the mouth of the Cwmnantcol River in Gwynedd, to one of the loveliest and most sacred places in Wales. Forming a giant step above Tremadog Bay, Ardudwy rises in a patchwork of high, rolling pasture and drystone walls to the foot of the Rhinnogs – a hidden world of mist and gnarled rowans and scraggy sheep, where megaliths still outnumber people. At this hour, the mountains were silhouetted against a sky the colour of saffron, growing paler as I climbed the lane out of Llanfair village, still sleeping soundly at this hour, and out across the undulating country beyond. Flocks grazed on the slopes of Foel Senigl, where I encountered the first great stone at the roadside. An octogenarian hill farmer, dressed in an oily boiler suit and riding a quad bike with his collies, had told me about the old trackway the previous day, after I’d taken a wrong turn in the woods above Talsarnau. “Follow the stones and they’ll lead you to that hill up there . . .” He pointed to a flattened summit above his farm. “There’s an old hillfort. My grandfather used to find flint.” A succession of megaliths and ruined kerb cairns, dating from the Early Bronze Age, punctuated the route at regular intervals. The path ascended at an easy gradient at first, steepening as it approached the summit. By the time I arrived, great beams of angled sunlight were raking the estuary below and the river, shining silver, wound between frost-dusted fields and sandflats that had begun to glow a vivid crimson colour. Standing on the rocks at the top of Moel Goedog, as the hill is known, I struggled to take in the beauty of it all; the silent splendour. And I had that feeling I only get when I’ve been guided to somewhere remarkable by our ancestors; somewhere the world has somehow forgotten: a mixture of gratitude and melancholy I can’t quite account for but which, for a moment, helps me feel close to my loved ones, alive and deceased, and those distant and unknown who knew the place that I now know and which has become a part of me, for however long I live.

The Meon Valley in Hampshire is better known for its Saxon heritage than its prehistory but the area is also rich in vestiges from pre-Roman times. Judging from the number of burial mounds adorning hilltops and ridges on these beautiful Chalklands, it enjoyed a particularly halcyon period around the first centuries of the second millennium BCE, when it became extensively settled by Beaker migrants from the near continent. Encircled by defensive ramparts in the Iron Age, this cemetery at Old Winchester is the pick of those Bronze Age sites, forming a dramatic spectacle from the air. I travelled there in the icy predawn darkness yesterday to explore the region in the company of local artist John Thomson. Despite the bitter cold we enjoyed watching the valley wake up and managed to sneak this shot of the hillfort during a brief break in the sunrise cloud cover. The others in the sequence were taken on a balmy summer’s evening, as larks babbled overhead and sleek, well fed cattle grazed in the lush pasture below. Yesterday, the only signs of life were crows being swept past in the freezing wind, and the occasional squirrel scurrying through the fallen leaves in the woods. I’ll be posting more from this part of the country as I uncover its other wonderful barrow-scapes over the coming months. Any tips?

Kawaijirobei Kofun - 川合次郎兵衛塚1号墳 Kani City, Gifu - 岐阜県可児市 This rare type of kofun dates from early in the 7th Century and features THREE seperate burial chambers. If that's not cool enough, it's believed that the two side chambers were later additions, added towards the mid to late 7th Century, AND, the small chamber is thought to belong to a child - this is the first kofun that I've seen that has a child's chamber. Apparently the kofun was originally surrounded by a moat and had walkways over the water for access to it. Speaking of access, after its restoration the burial chambers were initially open to the public but have been closed off in recent years. This is a trend I'm seeing more and more and I don't know why. I can't see anything particularly dangerous with keeping these open, and vandalism is more or less non-existant in Japan. Japanese people themselves also seem frustrated by this, so it's not only this complaining foreigner who is annoyed by it. Camster Cairns in the Flow Country of Caithness, NE Scotland. Around 5,600 years ago when these structures were built (in the Early Neolithic), the tundra-like landscape would have looked very different. The burn they overlook, which meets the sea at Wick on the north coast, would have wound through grasslands dotted with copices of birch and alder, and clumps of sheep and cattle. Climate change and overgrazing saw the spread of blanket bog and the formation of a myriad inky black lochans towards the end of the Bronze Age. And today a spruce plantations and phalanxes of giant white wind turbines bound the horizons. But it is still of wonderfully atmospheric area. The day I was there coincided with a succession of dramatic snow flurries. Thankfully the sun popped out just long enough for me to capture the tombs in full winter plumage. Warming up in the van afterwards i knew the long drive north had already been worth the effort, regardless of whether or not I made it over the Pentland Firth to Orkney. This was one one of those rare times when everything - the weather, the light, landscape and gear - all came together. Two pics from the shoot feature in my book. The pair posted above are new conversions, created today. Here’s to more magical frosty mornings over the season to come❄️

The following three photos found in the Safe Harbor archives were likely taken by Cadzow or a fellow team member during their 1930-1932 field survey of areas that would be affected by the rising waters due to the Holtwood and Safe Harbor hydroelectric dams. Cadzow's survey recorded a fascinating variety of petroglyphs and Native American sites in the Safe Harbor area, many of which are now underwater. His findings are recorded in his Safe Harbor Report No. 1 and Safe Harbor Report No. 2. . Please note that the captions are written exactly as found on the photographs. . Slide 1: The first photograph, labeled as #501, says, " #501: Indian graves found near Safe Harbor." It was taken on July 30, 1930. . Slide 2: The second image, labeled as #502, says, "Ancient Algonkian warrior found near Shenks Ferry." . Slide 3: The third image, labeled #524, displays several pieces of Native American pottery with a difficult to read caption in cursive that might say, "Sumer focus as B6." Pics of a centuries-old burial ledge in the mountains of PNG, near Segaiyo Village. Quite impressive! Besides the many human bones accumulated at the ledge, it also has ancient rock paintings. Their origin and age are unknown. But their similarity to rock paintings in northern Australia suggests that they might be many thousands of years old. The red color of the paintings is not the paint itself, but the color that the rock got after chemically reacting with the long-gone paint. Outdoors | History | Stone Circle | Megalithic Site | Ireland |West Cork | Exploring | Adventure 🟢 Near Glandore you will find what is locally called Druids Alter. 🟢 Drombegs Stone circle is one of Irelands most visited Megalithic sites. 🟢 Dating back to the late Bronze Age over 3000 years old. 🟢 Below is a very brief description of the history of this fast site. Drombeg Stone Circle is a circle of 17 standing stones which on excavation showed that there had been an urn burial in the centre. It has been dated to between 153BC and 127AD. The Drombeg Stone Circle, or as it is locally known as the Druid’s Altar, is located on the edge of a rocky terrace overlooking the sea about a kilometre away, in Glandore County Cork. This is a circle of 17 standing stones which on excavation showed that there had been an urn burial in the centre. It has been dated to between 153 BC and 127AD. Excavations in 1957 and 1958 revealed cremated bones in a deliberately broken pot wrapped with thick cloth and buried near the centre of the circle along with 80 other smashed sherds, four bits of a shale and a collection of sweepings from a pyre. To the west of the stones is a hut site with fulacht-fia cooking place. This prehistoric kitchen had a flagged trough in which water was boiled by dropping red-hot stones into it. Recent tests confirmed that using this method, 70 or more gallons of water could be boiled for almost three hours. The midpoint of one of the stones at Drombeg was set in line with the winter solstice sunset viewed in a conspicuous notch in the distant hills #atlanticwayexplorer #megalithic #stonecircle #druidsofinstagram #megalithicmarvels #wawpics #wildatlanticway #glandore #historical #historicalireland #irishhistory #irishheritage #burialground #burialsite #irishhistoryandheritage #westcork #stonehistory #irishbronzeage #bronzeage #latebronzeage #historyofireland #irelandinpictures #instaireland #cork_daily #irish_daily #irekandsancienteast #irishhiddenheartlands

The tale of the witch grave at Ettington Park estate....Ettington Park Hotel has long had a reputation for being one of the most haunted hotels in the UK – it was even named as such by the AA. Guests have reputedly seen an old woman in Victorian clothing walking along the conservatory entrance and several people are said to have witnessed the ghost of a man and his beloved dog wandering in the library and vanishing quickly. ... however the tale of the witch is a violent one. Centuries ago a member of the Shirley family, (still owners of this estate) claimed she was a witch and could cast spells on the trees. Not wanting to have a 'witch' in the family she was brutally killed along with her two children and buried on the grounds. This is what remains of her grave. The two cherubs on the tombstone represent her children. #Witches #witchtales #witchkiller #history #burialsite #gravestone #witchgrave #trees #ancienttrees

Kiusu Earthwork Burial Circles/Henges - キウス周堤墓群 Chitose, Hokkaido - 北海道千歳市 Here we have the Kiusu Earthwork Burial Circles, which are curiously very similar to henges in the UK. They date from 1200BCE towards the latter part of the Jomon period. It's believed that these circles functioned as mass graves. As far as I'm aware this a very rare type of ancient site in Japan and I'm only aware of the existence of two other circle/henge type burial sites in Japan, both others also in Hokkaido - and the Kiusu site is the largest. There are 9 circles in total and they range in size from 30 to 83 metres in diameter. Most of them are grouped together, side-by-side, with some sharing embankments. Due to their dimensions and function, it's said they are the precursors of kofun 😎 Archaeological research revealed burial pits within the circles and around their outer edges. One pit contained a standing stone, suggesting it to be a marked grave, and other items were discovered such as broken pieces of clay figurines (dogu), as well as circular stone arrangements, traces of red ochre, and a stone staff with engravings that is thought to have served a ceremonial purpose. You'll see in the pics that a road has been built right through a circle, it's the case with the circle next to it also. It's better than wiping out the circles, but a bit of a shame nonetheless. There was an English speaking volunteer guide on site who approached me just as I was about to leave. She said that she'd only seen one other foreigner there since she started in 2021. So if you're in Hokkaido, go and give the place some love. Due to their size and nature they're not the easiest things to show via photographs, but as always I've made an accompanying video where they can be seen far more clearly : http://tinyurl.com/kiuhok #henge #henges #burialsite #burialcircle #burialmound #archaeological_site #archaeologylife #archaeologylovers #japanhistory #japantravel #archaeological #japanhistory #jomon #jomonperiod #hokkaido #ancientjapan #ancienthistory #japanarchaeology #traveljp #traveljapan #uniquejapan #kofun #cooljapan #unknownjapan

One of the 7 wonders of the world. The Taj Mahal. Built with beautiful marble and decorated with jade, onyx, turquoise, coral, lapis lazuli, agate and more. When the moonlight hits these crystals, they shine. It was very crowded and no pictures were allowed inside. I was surprised to find out that this site was built by the king for his third wife’s burial site, where he is also buried next to her. Construction on this started in 1632. During its history parts were taken down and rebuilt later. Gardens were removed to open the space up. There is a mosque, guest house, and four gate entries. The king also started building a black marble building behind it on the other side of the river but never finished. In the last video you can see how they filed and shaped the stones. What else do you know about the Taj Mahal? It is so beautiful and I would love to see it under the full moon light. Love learning about things I had no idea about. I never really planned on going to the Taj, it just happened to be on our way to our last tiger Safari. It is part of the golden triangle which includes New Delhi, Jaipur (the pink city) and Agra. Side quest successful. #7wonder #7wondersoftheworld #tajmahal #india #agra #travel #adventure #marble #stone #burialsite #masterpiece #education #learnsomethingnew
