Many years ago, while working on healing depression, anxiety and addictive tendencies, I came to the recognition that I was being negatively influenced by certain relationships. I began to understand how carrying on conversations with particular individuals, caused my thought life to go south and exacerbated anger. While this was such an important recognition and phase of healing, it was no easy task to break free from long term friendships and also remove myself from a lot of social gatherings. A great deal of loneliness ensued as well as guilt for ending relationships. I was judged a lot for being cold and unsocial. I began to carefully choose relationships, which helped me grow and become a better human being. While we will never be able to find perfect human beings with whom to relate, I do believe it is possible to surround ourselves with individuals, who hold similar values and help build us and rise to higher levels of living. If you aren't already paying attention to how you are feeling and thinking around those with whom you keep company, I encourage you to begin doing so. We have all heard the saying, “you are what you eat.” The same concept goes for who we surround ourselves with. I recently went out to eat with some close friends. We have been friends since childhood, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of women to be by my side. I think the reason why we have remained friends for so long is because of the positive impact we have on each other. Our friendships and relationships naturally change us. The people around you will reflect and mold you. They impact your life choices and perspective. That’s why it is so important to lean on Godly wisdom when it comes to choosing your company. If we are around negative and critical people, we become that way as well. If we spend time with encouragers and goal setters, we become inspired. It’s better to have one friend who makes you a better person than 10 who stand by silently and watch you crumble, or worse, is the reason you’re falling to begin with. In a society overwhelmed with followers and likes, this is a truth we must be teaching our children- to be watchful and mindful of the company they keep. Pray for their friendships/relationships and communicate any concerns you may have. Be an example to them of using wisdom in selecting friends and partners. We need to be intentional with who we choose to spend time with! “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Prov 13:20 “As iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens [and influences] another.” Prov 27:17 Think of yourself as a bucket or tank… some people may fill you or as the verse says, some may “sharpen” you and others may drain you or make you dull. It’s important to love people but if you’re running on empty, how will you ever fill or sharpen someone else? Having boundaries around certain friendships is so important. Take a note of how you feel once you leave being with certain people. Do you feel bad about how much you gossip, complain or constantly talk about things that you honestly can‘t stand? Do they change the focus of the conversation to manipulate you? Do they subtly tear you down with their words or actions? Do you just feel like something is off and you don’t know why? We need people around us that build us up and encourage us. People that celebrate our wins and are with us in our lows too. People that don’t make you feel bad for having a busy stage of life. As parents, we can be mindful of this with our kids and their friendships too. Encourage them to be around people they see as wise! Sit and discuss with them about what it looks like and empower them to be mindful of these friendships. We can also be praying for our children to choose wise friendships. When I chose to spend my life with my husband (Best decision ever!) his MaMa/grandmother said to me, “ever since he was a baby, I prayed for the girl he would marry and their children”. WOW! To me, it was so amazing and so special. It reminded me that it wasn‘t chance, it wasn’t “fate” but our relationship was in God’s plan all along! She wasn’t the only one praying. I am so beautifully surrounded by people including my mother that pray for me. I know my mum also prayed for my other friendships. She prayed that some would end and she prayed that some would be nurtured and I’m so thankful! Imagine our kids surrounded by people that build them up, support them, love them and how that will impact who they become as they grow up.
PAUSE AND PRAY: “God, it is said in Your Word that whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm (Proverbs 13:20 ESV). Please help me become wise, Lord. I know that true wisdom comes from You, and so being truly wise requires walking closely with You. Please help me with this because it is easy to get distracted by foolish conversations and pointless arguments. Show me what words, thoughts, and actions honor You, and then surround me with wise people that I can grow alongside. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
