“Aiming for the Highest Aim” That’s what orders chaos, it provokes possibility, and enhances the probability of a positive outcome. Last night we had the opportunity to be in community with thousands of other people that all had the same goal. To show up, to listen, and to learn. We were reminded last night that communal existence is sacrificial. To consistently think about others while making decisions, to be others focused, now there’s a novel idea. Our culture glorifies Radical Individualism. We now know that it doesn’t work and it will not work, Ever. (We are a communal People) We have truly lost our way in the west. Jordan Peterson is attempting to give people the tools that they need so that they can critically think about who they are, where they are, and where they are going. Last night he simply outlined just how imperative the Ten Commandments are while also acknowledging the negative consequences that we are experiencing right now for not being in alignment with the Laws. I woke up today thinking; I have to do more, I have to be more, I have to continue work my face off to align my character with the character of Jesus. I walked away last night with a new appreciation of the Ten Commandments, with a new appreciation for my wife, our marriage, and the communities that we are a part of. CODACON is the flagship event for the Camp Owners and Directors Association. This year it was held in New Orleans. Cliff has been on the board of CODA for ten years as the Mid-America rep, and he has been running this conference for about that long. He now Co-Chairs with the owner of @campmatoakaest1951, Jason Silberman. 200 Camp owners, directors and industry professionals from every region of the country attend this conference annually, and the keynotes are experts in business, CEOs, social psychologists, activists and beyond. Their opening keynote was #JonathanHaidt , NY times best selling author of #coddlingoftheamericanmind and #therighteousmind . @dayna49045 (Dayna Hardin) did an outstanding interview of #Fendi President, Joanna Dubin. The conference closed with Amazon conservationist, Paul Rosolie, whose work protecting the jungle has proven to be critical. When we first started budgeting, we read a book by @daveramsey and he talked about being “gazelle intense.” It’s a phrase used to describe a gazelle running away from its predator, and how focused you need to be when you are doing something hard like paying off debt! Paying off debt is HARD! But so is a season of contending for your health, a season of fighting for a relationship, building a business, and pursuing a calling. @johnmarkcomer wrote a book years ago with the title of a line by Dallas Willard, stating that if we want to thrive in our lives and our soul, we must ruthlessly eliminate hurry. I have use that phrase “ruthless” in a number of areas of my life. I have ruthlessly tackled, clutter and chaos in our home. I have ruthlessly committed to my health goals. I had the chance to hear John Mark Comer live the other night. One of the things he talked about was the coddling of the American mind and our current general state of flakiness. And it’s not just flakiness to others it’s flakiness to ourselves. It’s the inability to keep a commitment to ourselves. To follow through on a plan, a goal, and pursue something we deeply desire. When discouragement comes our way, we tap out instead of digging deep. And we miss out. We miss out on the resilience and character that is built within us when we keep going, even though it’s hard even though we want to quit. Even though we don’t see immediate results. What would this next season look like if you showed up for yourself and the things that God has put on your heart with gazelle intensity? Reading in cars: parenting life prevents long indulgent reading feasts, but offers many opportunities for quick bites. Either way, the food gets eaten. Not finished with this book yet, but still enjoying it, still recommend it. It was published in 2018 and the big ideas have since been thoroughly discussed in articles, on podcasts, and in interviews with the authors—it’s still worth the read to examine how they knit those ideas together. “The Hammer or the Nail” There are not enough positive words in my vocabulary to fully articulate my appreciation for Mitchell and for how hard Palmer worked today!!!! I am extremely grateful for the young men and coaches that pour into our children. Natalie and I talked about how blessed we are with our boys having access to so many great young men that do the mentoring and discipling which allows us to simply be parents. Palmer was a savage today, he was the hammer, and he also he got to be the nail. He got to learn, he had to get up, and he got a chance to manage and control his emotions, and he also had the chance to encourage someone else. (★★★★★) Pamela Druckerman’s ‘Bringing Up Bebe’ is flat out badass. Based only on the cover and subtitle I would never have picked it up if not for the recommendation of a close friend. So glad that I did because it spoke to many of my worries and frustrations with American parenting and, as an educator of high schoolers for the past ten years, my concerns with the lack of resilience many of our youth possess. The observations about French parenting (believe me, Paris was cute, but I’m no Francophile) struck every chord for me: how French kids don’t subsist on just cheerios and Mac and cheese, how they sleep through the night, and how they achieve autonomy faster than American children (who sometimes never achieve this level of self-actualization). The thesis or through line is this: children are best educated when they have firm boundaries in place, are made to delay gratification, given room to play, and not forced by their parents to be shuttled in expedited fashion from one milestone to another. IE: “MY child was reading at three months and changing the oil in our car by their first birthday.” Maisie is two months old and I don’t have anything figured out as her father. The wisdom of this book is not affirmed by my experiences with my beautiful daughter but instead by the accumulated experiences with thousands of wonderful students who, I believe, are too frequently being coddled as a result of the well-intentioned parenting of Gen Z/Millennials. Be loving, be gentle, be respectful, but also, as Rousseau said, “If, by so much care, you spare them every kind of discomfort, you are preparing great misery for them.” Lastly, the book itself is excellently written with nuanced cultural observations and is in no way a hit job on American parenting as a whole. If you think about reading it and see a lot of negative reviews… well, that’s kinda the point. It’s counter-culture. “If we want to create welcoming, inclusive communities, we should be doing everything we can to turn down the tribalism and turn up the sense of common humanity.” “The Coddling of the American Mind” by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathon Haidt is a warning about Safteyism culture. Probably one of the most quoted books in all the podcasts I listen to – all roads lead back to Haidt research (probably because of the Let Grow parenting resources which were also mentioned in this book). I’m glad I finally read it, although most of this stuff has been covered by Haidt interviews throughout the years. It was a great follow up to the Righteous Mind (and Lenore Skenazy’s “Free-Range Kids”), further explaining the elephant/rider references and then introducing the concept of the three great Untruths: • The Untruth of Fragility: "What doesn't kill you makes you weaker." • The Untruth of Emotional Reasoning: "Always trust your feelings." • The Untruth of Us Versus Them: "Life is a battle between good people and evil people." These “Untruths” as they call it, outlined throughout the book are what they have concluded are responsible for governing how children are raised and causing them to be more anxious and depressed than previous generations. They also highlight 10 distorted automatic thoughts, which are: mind reading, fortune telling (negatively predicting the future), catastrophic thinking, labelling, discounting the positive, negative filtering, overgeneralizing, dichotomous thinking, shoulds ("I should do well; if I don't, then I'm a failure"), and personalizing blame. Fascinating! This book was published in 2018, so I’d love to know if there is new data from more recent students who are either rejecting or double-downing on their predecessors…? My favorite takeaway: “Argue as if you're right, but listen as if you're wrong (and be willing to change your mind). Make the most respectful interpretation of the other person's perspective. “The Bridge Builder” The "The Bridge Builder" poem, written by Will Allen Dromgoole, is a classic piece with a powerful message about kindness and legacy. In the poem, an old man encounters a swiftly flowing river with no bridge. Despite his own advanced age, he builds a bridge, which puzzles a younger passerby. The old man explains that he built the bridge not for himself, but for others who will come after him, symbolizing the importance of helping others and leaving a positive legacy. The poem encourages selflessness and the idea that our actions can have a lasting impact on the lives of those who come after us. I am in no way as selfless as I need to be and should be.
