I vividly remember my first marathon day. It was day 16 or 17 on my thru hike of the Colorado Trail. We decided to blaze through a dry segment and by the time we hit 25 miles it was the coldest iciest rain I had every walked through. Each sprinkle striking my face like little blades made of ice. I remember saying “RED, RED, RED, RED, RED” over and over and over. It got me through that last 1.2 miles and honestly through the rest of the hike. You see I had spoken to a psychologist prior to leaving on my 32 day adventure across Colorado. And she gave me a few tactics to use while I was out there. While endurance is a sport of physical ability I believe it is more mental than anything else. This color coding tactic was the one I used the most and it got me through some of the toughest and trying times on trail. I’ve continued to use this during all my adventures in mountain endurance. As I approach my first 50K I’ve also created my list of unhelpful thoughts that have sparked throughout my training. I color coded these into four different categories: Imposter Syndrome, Uncomfortable, FOMO/Emotional, and Other. I’ve committed them to memory and I’ve practiced this on all my runs. I told the hubs, “I’m thinking about going for a run.” It was snowing. I love running in the snow, which is easy to forget when it was sunny and 70 degrees the previous day. “I don’t know how long it will take, with all this snow.” “Okay, great, take your time.” So I went. The path was slushy, and within the first few minutes, my feet were wet. I kept going and discovered running through the slushy puddles invigorated me, it felt fun and invited me into wonder, like, “Let’s go! I have something to show you!” I remembered a motto I picked up someone along the my progression as a trail runner: “Enjoy each run for what it is.” Trail running is such a metaphor for life for me. Like… Enjoy each day for what it is. Enjoy your kids/friends/partner/neighbors/family members/community for who they are. Let’s go! Can’t believe it’s already been 2 months of #pct2024 and #thruhiking season. I am thankful for all the licenses I acquired while doing travel therapy (and some more since starting Blaze) as I’ve been able to connect with hikers on 5 of the main scenic trails already this season. I couldn’t ask for a more motivated, and gracious community of people to dedicate my services to. It’s truly incredible the injuries people can overcome and continue walking 20+ miles a day. I also cannot wait to nerd out on injury trends I’m seeing from different trails, specific terrain and days on trail. August 10, 2024. The Finish Line! 472.0 - 486.5 Miles: 14.5 Ascent: 1774 | Descent: 3331 Sleep: Tent Mood: 🥳🥳🥳 Last day! Knee hurts. Happy to finish! Slept pretty good the last night on trail knowing in just 14.5 miles I’d be a Colorado Trail Thru Hiker! This part of the trail was, you can assume, beautiful, like all the rest of the trail! The four of us enjoyed a little celebration, hoping our cans and bottles would explode with enthusiasm. But no, they just foamed. Maybe it is the elevation! We went into Durango and made the rounds to businesses who offer free or discounted food, drink and goodies to trail completers. This included some amazing hand made chocolate, beer and patches from the Colorado Trail Foundation. August 9, 2023. Miles 449-472 End of Segment 27 into 28 Today I woke up early and watched the sunrise from a beautiful Overlook. I had a happy feeling all day, knowing the trail is about finished! Around noon, I walked Indian Trail Ridge, a narrow ridge covered with loose rocks, reminding me of what “knife’s edge” on the Appalachian Trail might be like. (Yes, I skipped Knife’s Edge!) Around 1:00, we met up with Mike and had a relaxing lunch at Taylor Lake complete with cold LaCroixs! The trail continued along a beautiful flowery path, and then started up onto a narrow ridge of Kennebec Pass with variety of rocks on the trail. I love rocks and the changes of color and size throughout the day! Mike was supposed to meet up with another hiker and give her some equipment she needed, but somehow they missed each other. Ended the day at Junction Creek! The trail is coming to an end. It tells me where (and how) to get off the trail, should I need to, where there are streams I may need to cross, wilderness boundaries and most importantly, where I can find a water source. The sand lily seems to pop up overnight, then disappear back to the earth equally fast. Mystery abounds with this species; several different suggestions have been made as to which family it belongs, and no one knows for sure how its seeds are dispersed because they mature underground. Similar to most spring bloomers, the traveler must search to find this flower. 🌟 2024 Trail Team Spotlight 🌟 Say “hi!” to Sammi or “Squirrel” as she’s known on trail! Squirrel didn’t come from an outdoorsy family, but she learned that time in nature (during day hikes) really helped with her mental health. After learning that people hike 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail, she decided to set out in 2023 and hike it too! Squirrel decided that she needed a change - to prove to herself that she could do hard things! After completing the Appalachian Trail, Squirrel has completed many more miles in the Smokies, has hiked the Benton MacKaye, Mountains to Sea, and the Foothills Trail. This summer, she is taking on the Colorado Trail. Since she has never hiked out West, she is super pumped for it! In the next five years, she also has her sights set on the Triple Crown. 👑👑👑 We are so excited to have Squirrel representing the Colorado Trail on our team this year, and we look forward to following along with her journey to the Triple Crown. #THRUrTrailTeam You can follow along with Squirrel’s Colorado adventures here, and on her IG profile @the_sammi_show 🤩
