Almost 10,000 books were given directly to 10,000 children. (We still have a few left and are in contact with schools to distribute them.) I’m always looking out for excellent books for children. I have just finished this one, the first book by @josierones . This is a wonderful, fun book about the fantastic Edie Eckhart. So brilliant to read about a fun, creative young girl who has cerebral palsy, we need more positive books like this. This is a great read for children aged 7 plus. ❤️ Just finished book 2 and again I’m crying. So much in these stories resonates with me and I do wish that there was something like this for me to read when I was growing up. Letting me know that some of the ways people treated me because of my disability were not OK. This is all about a camping trip. I had a similar experience on a camping trip. It was with the Guides. I was 10/11 maybe and the one thing I wanted to do was a conservation animal walk thing, I could walk a lot better then, even climbed trees and things, and was told I couldn’t do it cos it was walking. There were other things too that I was not allowed to take part in. However, in a bid for them to look more ‘inclusive’ when it came to some welcome thing with whatever bands were playing at this big festival (some Boyband called Yell and PP Arnold, I seem to recall… it was the late 80s) I was the one who had to do it, almost, pardon the pun, ‘wheeling’ the disabled person out to show off. It still really bothers me to this day. If it happened now something would be said. Thankyou @josierones for highlighting that stuff like this happens and that it’s not ok and not everyone is like that. And like Edie says ‘I am Edie, and that’s enough’ - (Which reminds me of @dehwestend - another important piece of writing about not having your differences define who you are) Please PLEASE keep writing these books Rosie, they’re so very important, heartfelt, honest, inspirational and educational and I love you for writing them and creating a world that I know will make so many young people feel like they’re understood. I am a very proud mummy today. Esther and Bea have both finished a full week of stage school and ended giving their all in a show for parents. I am so proud because they worked hard and were brave going somewhere new, meeting new people and joining in with singing, dancing and drama. My two dyslexic girls learned all their lines and lyrics which was just brilliant! Esther is a beautiful singer but finds dance and drama challenging. It did not stop her having a go though. Bea is a brilliant actress but lacks experience and confidence but she is getting better all the time. The girls do these classes to perform but also to try new things and make new friends and to become more confident in themselves. In celebration of how awesome Esther and Bea are I have chosen 9 stories that feature children who find themselves, find friends, find their courage, find their voice through theatre, music and dance. These stories show that drama, dance and music is for everyone. In amongst the Pages of these books are children who cannot read, children with selective mutism, autism and cerebral palsy. Children who are grieving and learning to live with loss. Children who are deaf, children who are shy. In between the pages of these books are theatres under threat and families learning to overcome life changing events. These stories are filled with joy and love and hope, humour and heaps of empathy. These stories matter because they make all children feel welcome in the world of theatre, dance and music. These books matter because they encourage all children to follow their dreams. We heartily recommend all of these brilliant and beautiful books! Which will you read first?
❤️ I read this last week. It’s taken me until now to figure out what I wanted to say about it. @josierones you are an absolute hero. I so wish there was something like this around for me to read as I went to senior school. There were so many little things in this that I could relate to. Experiences and conversations that I had as a kid. I only wish that the teachers I had were more understanding and knowledgeable about my disability. It’s amazing what a difference a few decades can make to the attitudes of people and the opportunities that are available. There were subjects at school that I loved and had to drop all because I couldn’t get to the classroom after I’d had my surgery, there were activities I wanted to do at guide camp that I was told I couldn’t because they didn’t think I was capable. But, when they needed to show that the organisation was inclusive it was me that was used for that. Even though it wasn’t the case. Although I have many many positive stories and memories and had an amazing family and friends growing up who always encouraged me it’s only now, as a grown up and reading this incredible book that I realise things could have and should have been a lot different at school and with the activities and clubs that I went to. It fills me with happiness that people like Rosie are able to have the platform now to speak about this and to be role models for young kids to look up to and a way to educate people about disability. Change perceptions and create a much more accepting world to grow up in. Please get your kids to read this book. Teach them that it’s ok to be different. To ask questions and not stare or poke fun. It's still middle grade March so it's time for another one of Emmy's reviews. I've not read this one so it's definitely all her own work, you can probably tell because her grammar and punctuation is much better than mine! Edie is an 11 year old who has cerebral palsy. She's excited to start high school UNTILL she and her best friend Oscar are put in separate classes! To make matters worse, Oscar quickly makes new friends. Will Edie be able to make new friends or will her cerebral palsy stop her from completing her task..... I liked everything about this book, it was hilarious. My favourite character was Flora because she loves football like me. Edie would be my favourite but she hates all sports and likes MUSHY PEAS! I didn't even mind the kiss at the end. There’s so much in my heart and mind about Pride month that I was going to share, but then these are my friends’ and family members’ stories to tell. What I am going to share is how wonderful that there’s so much more representation. It only occurred to me that many of our recent reads could be described this way when I saw them appearing in pride stacks! I love that such a diversity of characters are appearing in children’s and adult fiction, in a very everyday way as they should. I remember as a teenager watching Brookside, with the hugely important kiss between Beth and Margaret. The joy, shock or horror expressed by the country. Growing up I don’t recall any books with incidentally LBGTQ characters in, and later it would only seem to be the focus of a book or programme. How wonderful that a younger person can now find those characters to identify with, recognise themselves in. I’d never thought before about how hard it was for my friends growing up who couldn’t find that person in books or on television. As the Little Inkdrinker says: ‘you should be with who you love’. Mia got book post today!!!!! Her first book to review for @booknookhove #reviewcrew is The Amazing Edie Eckhart, due for release in August 2021. This is a new series from Yorkshire (yay!) Comedian, Rosie Jones. I asked if we could read it together, but Mia would rather read to herself these days, so I’ve asked to read it straight after. This looks great.
