On the palate, citrus, pear, and almond flavors, with a lush, round finish. Barrel-fermented and aged on the lees for nine months. And let’s talk about that color—liquid gold! Brigid and Tyler were so obviously in love it was so sweet. The ceremony happened in the main courtyard with the beautiful rolling hills of #EdnaValley acting as the most perfect and picturesque backdrop ever! We invited the guests to cocktail hour in the backyard of Biddle Ranch’s house and the scene was like something out of a movie. The beautiful green grass and Fig vines enveloping the whole area truly added to the feel of the whole day. It felt intimate and grand all at once. A mix of round and farmhouse tables added different angles and dimensions to the layout which I am always a huge fan of. Fluid Bloom came through with the gorgeous florals and Testa Catering served some of the best food ever - family style. This wedding was so special and it was magical getting to see the love the couple had for one another! Tucked back into a small canyon in Edna Valley, Tiber Canyon Ranch grows Tuscan olive varieties for olive oil. The ranch has stood between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Mountains since the early 20th century. Owners tell us it even contributed dried apricots and plums to be shipped overseas to Allied troops during World War I. The ranch’s owners first came to the property in 1993 looking to build a studio for glass-blowing. Visitors can enjoy olive oil tasting in the ranch barn, glass-blown art throughout the space, and views of native oaks and manzanitas. Tiber Canyon Ranch is also a wonderful stop while wine tasting in Edna Valley; pick up a few bottles for gifts along the way. Insider's tip: Tiber Canyon is also a beautiful wedding venue! #TBT to our Pinnacle sales team trip to the Central Coast of California, where we spent time touring the Slide Hill vineyard with Jim Binns, the owner and winemaker of @andremily_wines. Named for Jim’s two kids – Andrew and Emily – Andremily is one of the most dynamic producers of Rhône varietal wines in California. Jim got his start making wine as a college student at Cal-Poly, and eventually became the winemaker for Manfred Krankl at Sine Qua Non. Under Jim’s winemaking direction, the wines of SQN skyrocketed in prestige, and in 2012, Jim began making wine under his own label. Five years later, Jim decided to focus full-time on Andremily, and we couldn’t be happier to represent his cool-climate syrah and grenache bottlings. If you care about scores, then it’s worth noting that these wines regularly hit triple-digit ratings. Zocker, Gruner Veltliner, Edna Valley, Ca. 2017 . Having had this before and enjoyed it, I grabbed a bottle off the shelf of a high-end grocer. . Got home and only then realized it was a 2017. . Eight year old California Gruner gave me pause….but what the hey, let’s open it.. . Dang good, even at eight years of age.. still alive and relatively fresh. The time in bottle had rounded the edges a bit, smoothed out what had been a wine with screaming acidity. . Fruit flavors of citrus and ginger. Nice minerality. Still strong acid line. Medium body. Totally enjoyable. . Just goes to show, you never know! Countless times I’ve been surprised - so I try not to pre-judge and just taste. . It’s Winemaker Wednesday!! 🍷 Big shoutout to one of our favorites from #ednavalley @albanvineyards Beginning in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. Alban Vineyards’ is the first American winery and vineyard established exclusively for Rhone Varieties. Alban came to be a pioneer of the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers. Robert Parker’s declarated in The Wine Advocate that John Alban is “...the spiritual and qualitative leader of the movement...” On beginning to grow Viognier, Alban stated “I almost single-handedly doubled the world’s acreage,” referring to a time when its cultivation was reduced to 50 acres (20 ha) in two areas of the Rhône Valley, Condrieu and Château-Grillet. In Short: This @percasowines 2015 Grenache Blanc is aging very gracefully. I’m so excited & proud that I didn’t ruin it - but more than that, I’m excited about the things I’m learning because of it. Longer Version: A few weeks ago, when two #KrockPots were home, we decided to play “Wine Roulette.” I picked a bottle of wine out of our refrigerator with fingers crossed. We smelled it, we tasted it, I wrote down what everyone said. In particular, @dockrock42 and I smelled, now stay with me, “plastic, but it’s not bad, it’s good plastic.” Two of us reported lemon or citrus notes. One Krock Pot said: “It reminds me of the Christmas fruit salad you make.” (Christmas Morning Fruit Salad = Apples, Oranges, Cara Cara Oranges & Pink Grapefruit.) #WineFolly (@winefolly The Master Guide, page 119 to be precise,) confirmed that we smelled and tasted well… but… Googling “Good Plastic Smell In Wine” only resulted in “This wine is flawed.” Which it CLEARLY wasn’t. Cut to the chase, I emailed Lola and she taught me about the words “Petrol” “Diesel” and “Paraffin” and the chemical in TDN. But best of all, she made me feel smart, HA HA HA. I took decent care of these bottles (so far, we’re two for two and I have more in our collection!) and we’re really enjoying this aged white wine!!! Det dufter af kølige dyrkningsforhold, og her viser Edna Valley sin evne til at trives i de køligere klimaforhold, på trods af at den ligger i Californien, takket være det kystnære klima. Duften er meget delikat, indbydende og nærmest forførende. I smagen er vinen meget frisk, livlig og ungdommelig. Der er en sprød fyldighed til stede, og den viser mange af druens forskellige nuancer. Den er tør, men med en vis frugtsødme. Alkoholen kan anes, men på en positiv måde, da den kun tilføjer dybde til vinen. Her er tale om en mundvandsdriver som jeg personligt ikke så ofte finder ved Chardonnay. Jeg er vild med dette! Amerikansk chardonnay har en velkendt klang, men her er det en bemærkelsesværdig og præcis balance, der viser sig i kontrasten mellem det frugtagtige og lette og det mere kraftfulde og overdådige. Vinen er ingen af delene, men befinder sig derimod i en udefinerbar og varm mellemvej. The Niven family has been pioneering the cool-climate wines of California’s Edna Valley since the early 1970s, rendering them one of the most influential estates in San Luis Obispo. John Niven and his wife Lucy founded Cadre in 2022 with the goal of carrying on John’s grandfather’s vision of crafting energetic white wines from cooler sites within the region. As John puts it, a cadre is “a small group that has been specifically chosen to band together and promote a greater cause.” In the estate’s case, said cadre is the cool-climate production of Albariño, Grüner Veltliner, and Sauvignon Blanc cultivated just two to five miles from the Pacific coast.
