🥂 MOSCHOFILERO MEMORIES🥂 have you ever tried this grape? 🇬🇷 Throwing it back to last week’s holiday again with another delightful white wine moment 🙏🏻 🍇 Moschofilero is a Greek grape native to the Mantinia region, near Tripoli. It typically produces light, aromatic wines with fresh acidity! 🤓 For any geeks out there: this white grape actually has pink skins (like Gewürztraminer) and it’s late ripening so does need a relatively long growing season! Here in Mantinia, the climate is cooler thanks to the altitude, with warm days and cold nights during summer ⛰️ this does allow for a slower, extended growing season, giving the grape time to develop its potential aromatics. The grapes are often not as ripe as they could be which is why the wines are typically lighter and fresher, having retained a lot of their elegant acidity! — I N • M Y • G L A S S — 🥂 Another supermarket find, this 2023 Moschofilero is by @ktima_tselepos 🥰 📝 Despite knowing the variety, this was only the second time I’d had the chance to taste it and how I described it was: ‘it tastes like a cross between Muscat and Grüner Veltliner!’ 👄 Fresh and fragrant it had an ever so subtle spritz to it as it skimmed silkily across the palate. Flavours were juicy and refreshing: white grapefruit 🍊 pear 🍐 green grapes 🍇 rose petals 🌹 and white pepper spice 🤍 🥂 Another perfect option for sunset chill + simple snacks (cheese puffs and salted nuts 🙌🏻). Gandon good champagnes but they didn’t really stick with me. Good and drinkable Gevrey in between to clean the palate. Nice job by La Maison Romane. Finely aged Ledru champagne. However, again I never got the hype. Fine Amaury Beaufort. 2019 is showing extremely well at the moment and still has potential to grow. Enjoyed La Pucelle by Thomas Perseval. I might like Clément Perseval still better. Aurélien Lurquin was great but I definitely prefer his single varietal champagnes. Fidèle and Blanc d’Argile always deliver. You may have noticed that things have been radio silent over here for a while, and for a very good reason: I spent much of last year pregnant, and earlier this year we welcomed our sweet baby boy into the world. We’ve been in baby bliss ever since. Several years ago when my husband and I started our journey toward parenthood, we bought this Veuve Cliquot Grande Dame Brut Champagne 2008 to open once we welcomed a child into our family. We were so excited to finally be able to pop this very important bottle recently and celebrate our son’s arrival! This wine was magical. It was still so unbelievably fresh—I would never have guessed it was sixteen years old! The amazing acidity and persistent bubbles felt like a miracle, and paired perfectly with our chosen meal of fried chicken and French fries. This sparkler had traditional and complex notes, including chalk, brioche, Granny Smith apple, honeysuckle, almond, ginger, orange zest, and elderflower. In 2000, Bernard Van Berg whom originates from Netherlands with no experience in winemaking and no local ancestors, arrived in Meursault and founded Domaine Van Berg. He was known as the crazy Belgian guy with weird ideas and methods, making wines from unknown terroirs outside the the core of the prominent appellations and int just a few years, produced some very rare wines labeled as Bourgogne Grande Ordinaire. The selection of lands that Bernard purchased didn't really convince his neighbours as the plots were all located in poorly regarded areas but with a bit of research Bernard quickly discovered that these vineyards were once listed as part of the Meursault appellation and had true potential which he could make great wines from these rather humble terroirs by taking extreme care of the soil and the surrounding ecosystem. On top of that, Bernard conserved the areas in the middle of his vines with natural vegetation hence bringing wildlife and creating an unique ecosystem. The plots were also worked with the help of a horse and organically, without fertilizer, pesticides, or herbicides. From the first harvest in 2002 till the end of his career in 2017, Mr. Van Berg stayed true to his principles, with wines resting for 24 months in the cellar, without racking and aged in exclusive new barrels from Tonnellerie Damy which are relatively discretely toasted wood with a very pure and refined impression. He thus produced up to ten plot vintages or blended vintages whenever the volume produced for a plot was too low. The total annual production, depending on the vintage, was between 600 and 3,000 bottles only. Domaine Van Berg, Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire Rouge Solaire Made with only free-run juice of Pinot Noir from En Busigny vines planted in 1957 in Meursault. Its intense aromatic bouquet notes of very ripe red and black fruits with a touch of sweet spices and empyreumatic notes reminiscent of a port. Right, you get a champagne! Or better yet two. Paul Gosset was a very fine recommendation by Christian which was great starter that doesn’t break your bank. Good choice! Emmanuel Brochet is always wonderful while this bottle was still young and needs some more time. Region: Napa Valley, California, USA Thoughts: An easy to drink Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We were hanging out at a hotel bar, and a distributor was there giving the bar manager a tasting of several wines. They let us get in on the tasting, and as always, it was a good time! The next day, the manager asked if we’d like this bottle that was left. I’m not going to turn down free wine! We took this up to the room with wine glasses and enjoyed our evening. The island of Mallorca has 300 days of sunshine per year. Today was not one of them. 🤦♀️🇪🇦 We made the most of it and enjoyed our half day out of the city at a large winery that produces a million bottles per year! We had a tour of the winery and a lovely tasting with tapas. @maciabatle We saw the sights as well as we could from inside the bus and were relieved to get back on the warm ship.
