Foer's work deals with controversial topics - like 9/11, the meat industry, and the Holocaust - sometimes in fantastical and magical ways. His work is dark and dreary, while also uplifting and sentimental. He is a popular novelist (his book, Eating Animals, was a New York Times Bestseller), but has also received much criticism for his work. His 2002 book, Everything is Illuminated, was made into a feature film starring Elijah Wood in 2005! Discovering uncorrected proofs of three very special books that still remain favourites. The Jonathan Safran Foer blew my 20-something mind when I read it, and I hugely recommend it if you haven't read it. It is brutal and moving in places but so powerful and has stayed with me all this time (over 20 years!). I remember meeting debut novelist Khaled Hosseini at a sales conference and totally fangirling. I had no idea quite how huge a bestseller The Kite Runner would be, but it definitely felt very, very special even then. And The Night Circus had all the teams who worked on it buzzing- what a hugely exciting publication, and a magical book! I feel like it was ahead of its time and I'm so pleased there are people still discovering it now. I've still got my sprayed edge hardback edition- It feels like it was one of the first books to do that on publication! If you haven't read any of these three- check them out. EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED (2005) A spontaneously humorous, poignant and touching road movie. By considering the fact that it's Liev Schreiber's directorial debut, I would say that he knew how to dramatize things and positively put a heart into telling audiences what to feel. So not bad at all. The soundtrack has a fair share of original score by Paul Cantelon and songs from other artists including traditional stuff. To those who aren't film music fans, I believe the songs will feel quite special and I actually like certain scenes where they are precisely applied to add a sense of humor. Then to those who are, I'm delighted enough to say that it's orchestral with lovely combination of Gypsian and Russian folk music which doesn't feel out of place for sure. Also, it's melodic, emotional and quite thematic regarding a main theme for Jonathan's journey which is initially quirky but can't be underestimated when it enters drama mode. Jonathan Safran Foer – Alles ist erleuchtet Hier als Hörbuch. Jonathan Safran Foer ist Jonathan Safran Foer, der eben als er selbst 1997 in die Ukraine reist, um Ahnenforschung zu betrieben. Von der Vergangenheit sind ihm nur wenige Erinnerungen überliefert worden, sein Großvater ist scheinbar von einer Frau namens Augustine vor den Nazis gerettet worden, von der Foer ein Foto besitzt. In Lwow hat er einen Tourguide engagiert. Alex ohne Führerschein hat seinen griesgrämigen Großvater als Fahrer und den Riesenhund Sammy Davis jr. im Schlepptau und los geht die Fahrt in einer fast schrottreifen Karre. Nach Trachimbrod an der Grenze zu Polen soll es gehen, hier war seit Jahrhunderten ein Schtetl. Doch spurenlos scheint alles verschwunden, was Hinweise auf eine Vergangenheit jenseits des Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs liefern könnte. Die Drei mit Hund gurken in der Gegend herum, bis sie mehr zufällig auf eine alte Frau stoßen, die sich nicht nur an Foers Großvater erinnert, sie weiß auch etwas über Alex‘ Vorfahren. Und das wird dem Großvater sehr unangenehm. Was anfängt wie eine Slapstick-Komödie und einen gelungenen Gag nach dem anderen zündet, verschiebt sich in ein äußerst bedrückendes und schwer zu ertragendes Drama. Nach dem Besuch Foers entsteht eine Brieffreundschaft mit Alex, in dem Foer die Geschichte des Schtetls als Romanentwurf beschreibt. Beginnend im Jahr 1790 schildert er das Schicksal seiner Vorfahren, bis 1942 die Deutschen einfallen. Zu diesem Teil steuert Alex die letzten Mosaikstücke bei. Jonathan Safran Foer hat einen außergewöhnlichen und komplexen Roman geschrieben, der noch lange nachhallt. Es ist vielleicht gerade die hohe Kunst und die Abnormität, eine Komödie, einen Roadmovie, einen Briefroman, eine Geschichtschronik und die Beschreibung eines Massakers nicht miteinander zu amalgamieren, wobei auch noch der Beitrag von Alex in einem bizarren Kauderwelsch geschrieben ist. Sehr lesenswert.

Bellissimi i paesaggi che vediamo lungo il cammino e dopo un inizio divertente la storia prende una piega assai drammatica che mi ha molto emozionato e sapere che è presa da fatti reali rende tutto ancora più travolgente. Page turners, Unputdownable, Compulsive Reading… I had a chat this week with @thebookishmanc about Ed Park’s ‘Same Bed Different Dreams’, and how it’s one of those books you just can’t put down, it gets you completely ‘in the zone’. So that got me thinking about other books on my shelves which had a similar effect on me, once I’ve started I couldn’t (or didn’t want to) put them down. Ieri ho visto un film bellissimo, tratto da un romanzo di Safran Foer. Uno di quei film strambi, quasi irreali, dove ogni frame acquista un significato diverso e profondo man mano che la storia avanza. Come ogni film, e ogni libro, può essere interpretato a più livelli, ma ci sono delle immagini talmente simboliche e potenti che spesso lasciano una sensazione di scomodità. C'è il bisogno di fare un viaggio all' indietro e alla scoperta delle proprie origini per dare un senso alla vita di adesso. C'è la ricerca della propria identità che passa anche dal rinnegare ciò che si era. C'è il "casomai" che non è mai per caso. C'è la luna che, come per i greci o Leopardi o San Francesco, parla pur stando in silenzio. E ci sono gli oggetti che narrano nonostante il tempo, la polvere e la morte. Il paesaggio di questa mattina alle 7:30, col monte Rosa la luna e un aereo, mi ha ricordato che è davvero tutto illuminato dalla luce del nostro passato. Ma poi la luna lascia posto al sole e quell' aereo chissà dove va. 27 januari: Förintelsens minnesdag. Jag vet inte hur många böcker jag har läst om Förintelsen och andra världskriget. Fer kommer det också att bli, för det här är något vi aldrig får glömma. Det gäller särskilt nu när antisemitismen och fascismen åter är på uppgång i många delar av världen. För mig är det helt obegripligt, och ofta känns det hopplöst... Men vi måste försöka kämpa tillsammans, och att läsa om det och förhoppningsvis lära oss något är ett sätt! Bilden visar några av de böcker om Förintelsen och andra världskriget som jag har hemma i mina hyllor. Särskilda favoriter är Jag heter inte Miriam av Majgull Axelsson, Everything is Illuminated av Jonathan Safran Foer och Der erste Frühling av Klaus Kordon. Jag heter inte Miriam är en stark och berörande berättelse om en romsk kvinnas tid i koncentrationsläger och sedan livet efter kriget i Sverige. Den ger en delvis annan bild av Förintelsen än den vi har hört mest om. Läs och tänk! Everything is Illuminated (Allt är upplyst) handlar om en ung amerikan som reser till Ukraina för att försöka hitta den kvinna som kanske räddade hans farfar undan nazisterna under andra världskriget. Som guide har han en ukrainsk kille i samma ålder, och tillsammans upptäcker de mycket om historien, livet och sig själva. Den är både vackert och underfundigt skriven och kommer inte att lämna dig oberörd! Der erste Frühling är del tre i en tysk serie om en arbetarfamilj i Berlin, med nedslag vid särskilda tidpunkter då något hände som starkt påverkade historiens utveckling. Denna del handlar om slutet av andra världskriget, all förstörelse, och försöken att leva vidare och förstå. Här följer läsaren hur politik påverkar ända ner på individnivå. OGNI COSA È ILLUMINATA Jonathan Safran Foer, 2002 ⭐️⭐️1/2 ✍️ E guardami, Piccolo Igor, i lividi se ne vanno via, e così anche l'odio, e così anche l'idea che tutto quello che ricevi nella vita te lo sei guadagnato. 🌀 Arrivata all’ultima pagina ho avuto la sensazione di essermi persa qualcosa. Forse non l’ho letto con abbastanza attenzione, mi sono detta. Forse portarlo in metropolitana la mattina non era il giusto trattamento per questo romanzo. Forse. L’impatto iniziale è molto divertente: ci troviamo davanti a uno dei personaggi principali, Alex, giovane ucraino legatissimo a Piccolo Igor, il fratellino. Alex ci parla di sé come potrebbe fare un ragazzino un po’ megalomane, e lo fa in una lingua tutta sua, piena di strafalcioni e sgrammaticature esilaranti. Il suo racconto sarà tutto così, strafalcionato, traballante ma sorprendentemente cristallino e profondo. La sua vita si intreccia a quella del nonno, un vecchio in apparenza inacidito dal tempo, e di Jonathan, uno scrittore ebreo americano che si trova in Ucraina per cercare la donna che ha salvato suo nonno dai nazisti. Insieme a una cagna un po’ erotomane intraprenderanno un viaggio lungo e sgangherato che li porterà a “illuminare” il proprio passato. L’autore, però, ci racconta anche un’altra storia, saltellando fra i piani narrativi: con un balzo indietro di un paio di secoli ci troviamo in un villaggio ucraino, di popolazione ebrea, che ha un'aura quasi magica. Qui la neonata Brod, la cui vita di per sé ha un che di miracoloso, sarà adottata dal vecchio Yankel, usuraio infamato che vorrà solo il meglio per lei. Sullo sfondo, ma neanche troppo, troveremo tutti gli abitanti del villaggio, nelle loro umane e religiose contraddizioni. In questi capitoli lo stile narrativo cambia completamente, si fa a tratti lirico, sottile, per me onestamente difficile da seguire senza tornare indietro fra le righe appena lette.
