Bruce of course played desk sergeant “Wright” who told the Terminator in no uncertain terms that he could not see Sarah Connor as well as this memorable performance Bruce was also "executive of production" which meant he was heavily involved in the making of the Terminator (Bruce had previously worked for “Orion Pictures” in 1983). After the Terminator, Bruce would work on some very popular shows such as “Judge Judy” and Moesha”, Bruce would also go on to be nominated for a primetime Emmy Award for the TV series “Then There Were Giants”. After nearly four decades in Hollywood Bruce and his wife left America to pursue a new venture in New Zealand, they started their own family business called “Kerner Estate” which produced wine and olive oil. Aliens - 4K UCE With James Cameron’s earlier works now coming out on 4K UHD things are proving to be a bit controversial. Online debates turn into overheated keyboard fights trying to convince each other why their stance in the film-grain discussion is the right one. It think our favorite director apparently wished he shot his earlier movies on cleaner film-stock than was available at that time. So he turned to an AI-powered imaging process to tone down what’s been bugging him while at the same time preserving details locked under the blanket of noise that constitutes the structure of the celluloid. I guess I’m sort of an anomaly between what I perceive as the vocal minority in the physical media movie collecting community. It could also be that I give voice to what the silent majority thinks. I don’t know for sure. The other side of the debaters call this revisionism, but I love what Cameron’s been doing here. It’s almost like this movie was shot yesterday on digital and the clear image with unbelievable detail reveal something unseen for decades. Color and highlights are beautiful. The new Dolby Atmos mix is grand, powerful and localization is superbly precise. Yes, more restorations like these please! Both versions of Aliens are included on the UHD and the BD and literally every single piece of bonus material previously released has been included on a separate disc, so it doesn’t occupy any valuable real estate from the discs with the movies, which is the best of both worlds! The bonus features are complimented with a brand new retrospective with James Cameron himself in the forefront. Forty years ago today, the Terminator “officially” began filming. March 21st, 1984, was day 1 out of 47. There was no Arnold or Michael Biehn on the first day. It was all Linda Hamilton. The scenes filmed on day one were of Sarah seeing the news report in the pizza parlour, Sarah getting changed into her waitress uniform, Nancy dragging Sarah into the locker room to watch the news report, Sarah washing her face. It was an early set call for Linda as she was required for make up at 7am and then her set call was for 8am, all these scenes were filmed at “Micelli’s Pizzeria” near Hollywood Blvd, “Micelli’s also doubled as “Big Jeff’s” staff room & locker room. Special instructions from the call sheet – 7am call time and bring 3 changes of wardrobe. I love this shot of the Terminator walking up the path to knock on the door, it sounds silly but Arnold to me here looks huge, obviously he was huge but I don’t know for some reason he reminds me of a bulldozer here. “Hey $4.50” Any excuse to post a clip from the 35mm print of The Terminator. But it’s a testament to James Cameron’s directorial talent that he was able to perfectly build up the suspense from when Sarah saw the news report in the pizza parlour to leaving, spotting Kyle outside and being followed and then entering the Tech Noir. You can feel just how anxious Sarah is. The shooting schedule description of this scene is “Sarah growing fearful” which is brilliantly depicted by Linda Hamilton. Also a random bit of Trivia (if you can call it that) the ticket taker in the Tech Noir payment booth was played by Barbara Powers and according to IMDB she only ever featured in one other movie a 1986 film called “Club Life” in which she gets into a fight in a nightclub and gets knocked out by the bouncer. Continuing on from the last post. “Sarah gazes at his grin, a glimpse of the Reese that might have been, in another life.” James Cameron mentions on the DVD commentary that the “Tickling Scene” cut from the movie was a clumsy attempt from the writer to show that Reese had been brought back into the human race, as well as the scene coming across as goofy. I personally (just my opinion) agree with James Cameron, whilst I don’t think the scene is goofy as he describes it. I just feel it’s a bit too much, what appears in the film, Sarah fastening her lace and then pretending to throw the bag at Reese and getting a brief smile, then hearing the dog barking is perfect. Whilst the tickling scene works well in script form, I feel it was the right decision to cut it. “He had in his mind a cruising shark swimming around, looking for Michael and Linda” - Prop Master Tommy Estridge. While Arnold's whole performance as the Terminator in the original is “PERFECT” the scene in which he is scouring the car park for Kyle and Sarah, is pure perfection for me. Arnold really embodies the description of a shark hunting his prey. The scene is almost “Jaws” esq with the slow tension build up set perfectly to Brad Fiedel’s amazing score. It really is a testament to James Cameron’s filmmaking ability that he was able to create such a short tense scene lasting no more than 30 seconds, which then goes onto an action packed car chase.
