Movies 2024 - Morbius (2022; directed by Daniel Espinosa) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 1/2 tacos) April Fool’s: Another non-Spider-man Spider-Verse movie featuring an Oscar winner in the titular role. What could go wrong? I don’t know what came over me. As someone who doesn’t particularly care for Jared Leto and found the internet “buzz” around this movie to be super bizarre, I was expecting the be completely put off by this. Instead, as my friend Casey would put it, this is definitely the best 90s comic book movie released in 2022. It has issues that years of comic book movie dominance should have corrected, but it is never boring. I also love Matt Smith’s energy in this. I always feel like he just relishes the opportunity to act, so any time he pops up in a movie, he turns the dial up to 11. My appreciation of this movie is all pre-credits. The post credit scenes should not exist, and that isn’t just because Morbius wasn’t successful enough to warrant a crossover. They shouldn’t exist because this is the stupidest possible way to attempt a crossover. Do better. Leto is somehow the best he has been in quite some time. His Joker is godawful to me, so it is nice to see him do something I like again. I would revisit this world and, honestly, might appreciate this world more than any other Spider-man-less Spiderverse.

I watched the film "Late Night with the Devil" this morning. I really liked it! Late Night with the Devil is a boldly original compelling blend of supernatural horror and 70's nostalgia. The awesome script by directors Colin & Cameron Bairnes is ominous and packed with so much tension that just boils over time keeping you gripped. It keeps you second-guessing what's real and what isn't. The film has that old-fashioned late night charm and wit. You end up immersed as it plays out like a documentary and has all the 70's television trademarks. There is even a cool black and white aesthetic that is used throughout. It's a story of grief, fame, and the occult. The film has a tense atmosphere and some genuinely gross and creepy moments with phenomenal effects. The film stars David Dastmalchian, who has a fantastic nuanced performance. The film has a really good ensemble cast that includes Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, Rhys Auteri, Ingrid Torrelli, Georgina Haig, Steve Mouzakis, and Josh Quong Tart. The film is also narrated by Michael Ironside. It has some impressive cinematography by Matthew Temple and is expertly edited by Colin & Cameron Bairnes. It also has a cool, effective score by Glenn A. Richards. The film has some great costume and production design. Gran Turismo. Missed the boat on this one when it was at the cinema but finally got around to watching tonight. This is based on the true story of a gamer who won a virtual race to then go on and race for a real life motorsport company and compete at the highest level. The racing and driving scenes I thought were very good and it adds a good deal of emotion between main character Jann (played by Archie Madekwe) and his family and friends. Blackout was a very enjoyable watch, that brings back the old school werewolf. If you can get passed the drawn out scenes and the Meandering storyline of the blue collar workers in between. It was compelling to watch and definitely had some emotional weight to it, the cast collaboration was great but felt really overstuffed with too many supporting roles. I loved the humanity of the monster and the art combined, along with Alex Hurts performance portraying the struggles of the werewolf. Movies 2024 - Fantastic Four (2015; directed by Josh Trank) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 1/2 tacos) April Fool’s: Another big screen adaptation of Marvel’s “first family,” of superheroes. What could go wrong? Maybe I am too soft, but I didn’t hate this one. Its tone is way wrong and I wish they would have paid a little more respect to the comics in terms of character origin and treatment, but what exists here isn’t awful. Sure, it isn’t great, either. I don’t know that anyone in the cast really nails their performance, though Michael B. Jordan is so endlessly watchable that he comes closest. I think the film just not quite getting the tone of the characters right really is to blame. We could consider this the Emo Four and it may be closer to a more fitting name for the group. However, the movie looks decent. The effects aren’t awful and the story that does exist — with no outside knowledge of this universe — is at least decent. This is a hard movie to get excited about, but it is also a hard movie to get particularly angry about, too.
