Happy World Book Day 🌍 📖 ☀️ Here are some books that had a lasting impact on me as an early and then adolescent reader, and whose tone and themes still resonate with me today. We start with the magic of The Borrowers (who else loved Pod, Homily, and Arrietty? 😃). Then, as I moved into adolescence, I was drawn into the ethos and pathos of William Faulkner and E. L. Doctorow. I soon started paying attention the beauty of language and there is no one on earth with command of the English language superior to Vladimir Nabokov (whose native language was Russian. All the more reason to admire his writing. I’m sure most of you know Lolita, but try some of his other work. Pnin made me laugh out loud). Kazuo Ishiguro, Arundhati Roy, and Chang-Rae Lee made me feel things I could barely describe myself but with such exquisite sensitivity. As I moved into adulthood and life started kicking me in the shins (as it does) I was deeply moved by The Education of Little Tree and The Life of Pi for their emphasis on seeing through an experience to the story or lesson on the other side. In fact, The Life of Pi might be closest to the surface under my own tag line for In the Garden Behind the Moon, which is “the stories you tell become the life that you live.” The twist at the end of The Life of Pi will make you ponder that idea for the rest of your life. I love this book about anxiety and the neuroscience behind it, and I don’t see this book mentioned enough! Hey Warrior helps teach kids about the amygdala area of their brains and the amazing ways the amygdala works to keep them safe—even if there isn’t a true threat (hello, anxiety!) I also love how this book digs deeper into the physical symptoms of anxiety beyond the stereotypical symptoms of increased heart rate or difficulty breathing, as well as useful grounding techniques. Watchmen (2009) by Director Zack Snyder Tonight!!! I think Watchmen is Zack Snyder's best movie he's ever made, and it's because of his commitment to the source material. When Zack Snyder has access to an amazing story, I think he produces great work. And I think he has done an incredible job skillfully translating this to the BIG screen. It's his dedication to the original story that WOW'd us. One thing that makes Zack Snyder's Watchmen stand out for me is his awesome cinematography style. Those slow-mo action scenes with the speed ramps work so well for this genre. The funeral scene is absolutely gorgeously shot. The slow-mo, the music, and the color grading are stunning. The scene with Dr. Manhattan and Janey Slater at the carnival is amazing. They talk about time, fate, and life while everything is in slow motion. Janey looks really beautiful and classic, which is different from Dr. Manhattan's distant personality. Their talk is interesting and heartfelt. I love the part where Dr. Manhattan tells Janey she's getting older but, IMO, she's never looked better, lol. She's Stunning! I don't know if you're like me, but I have a real soft spot for traditionally looking women. Maybe, it's an illness, lol. Plus, the cinematography in this scene also stunning. Zack Snyder's movies are memorable and enjoyable for me, especially when he brings together his modern style and great stories, like in Watchmen. Is Watchmen Zack Snyder's best movie? Yes. Because it combines his great style and superb writing. ❤️ ARC Review ❤️ I loved, loved, loved this book so much, it was beyond incredible! Even though I was lucky enough to receive this as an e-arc I also ordered a physical copy because it’s such a fantastic story. This is the final book in the Mystics and Mayhem world and I’m so sad to say goodbye to these amazing characters. I loved that this story also included chapters focusing on all of our favourites from the previous trilogies too. This was such a bittersweet read. It was an amazing story but I’m sad that this series has come to an end. Question of the Week: What makes a great story? Answer: I guess that depends on who's reading it. For me, a great story has to have three elements: 1) compelling characters I care about (positively or negatively), 2) suspense, and 3) beautiful prose. I love it when a story keeps me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. In order for that to happen, I have to care about the characters, but there also has to be something that's either unknown or looming. Anne Rice was brilliant at this - she would let you know there's something you don't know, and when she finally reveals it, she'd let you know there's now something else you don't know.
