I love the sense of discovery in reading. Just last week, I learned that there are 8 total works in the Trojan Epic Cycle. The most famous are the Iliad & Odyssey, but there were 6 others that are now lost to us. Although not written by Homer, they included stories before, in between, and after the Iliad and the Odyssey. This bright green book contains a set of references to these 6 lost works found in other existing works (Pindar, Euripides, Homer, amongst others) and provides an overview of the contents of each. The first work is called the Cypria and there is a reference to the “will of Zeus” found in the first paragraph of the Iliad that sheds a whole new light on the meaning of that term and the understanding of the Iliad. It blew my mind. I plan to cover this discovery in an upcoming podcast episode, but it was one of those things that make reading such a joy. #theiliad #greekepicfragments #loebbooks #greekmythology #greekepics #willofzeus

"The proud heart feels not terror nor turns to run and it is his own courage that kills him" - Homer 4.5/5 One of my dreams was to read The Iliad by Homer. Had started it exactly last year ago at this time but for various reasons I couldn't continue it only to pick it up a few days ago. I had lost the attachment I had woven with the book back then and all the annotations and side notes I had made seemed alien to me. Nevertheless, Homer wasn't too late to scoop me up into his arms. To say something about him and his writing in a critical way, I don't think I'm suffice enough for it but one thing I can say is dayumm! How?! His narration flows so smoothly, he brings and contrasts the conflicting characters. His utilisation of metaphors is superior and he puts you in awe. It's a book every epic reader must pick up. #bookstagram #greekmythology #homer #epics #trojanwar #theiliad #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #goodreads #thesongofachilles #theodyssey #greekepics #bookcommunity #ancientgreece #troy #ancientcivilization #bookaddict #nerdigans #readersofinstagram #bookaddiction #ancienthistory #helenoftroy #greekpoets #readmorebooks #readerslife #booksstack

This is, in my opinion one of the most approachable English translation of the odyssey there is (there are of course other great ones) my experience with the odyssey has mostly been in danish, and a little fun fact about me is that I studied Ancient Greek and Latin for 3 years (I know, I’m a nerd) so I’ve also translated some sections in class myself. But I think if you want to read the odyssey without having read other Greek epics, this is the English translation I would recommend 🤗 #greekepics #theodyssey #emilywilsonodyssey #bookstergram #bookstergramdk #book #books #booklover #homer

History Now! On November 30th, 1876, the Mask of Aegamemnon is discovered by Heinrich Schliemann in Mycenae, Greece. The gold piece has two holes located by the ears, indicating that this gold funeral mask was placed on a royal figure. As a matter fact, research conducted by historians and archaeologists will conclude that this mask was made well before Aegamemnon's time (leader of the Greeks during the Trojan War). #homerilliad #illiad #greek #greekhistory🇬🇷 #lookbackatitHN #history_now777 #historytime #historylovers #greekepics #literature #poetry #kings #ancienthistory

Myths and epics are constantly revisited and reimagined. The Song of Achilles is not new in that respect ; rather it is probably the book that has resulted in a fresh demand for retakes on the myths of yore, especially from a feminist pov. #songofachilles #madelinemiller #greekmyths #greekepics #theilliad

🎲 Hermes was born of Zeus and Maia, one of the Pleiades and daughter of the Titan Atlas. Shortly after his birth, Maia concealed him in a cave for his protection and appointed a guardian by the name of Bigboss to keep watch. Even as an infant, Hermes displayed his cleverness. Taking advantage of his guardian's slumber, he escaped the cave to see the world. During his explorations, he met Apollo, who was looking after his herd. Mesmerized by the animals' beauty, Hermes decided to steal them. To cover his tracks, he tied branches to the animals' tails, leading them in reverse to confound Apollo. During his travels, Hermes chanced upon a turtle shell. With the tendons and horns from the oxen he had sacrificed to the gods, he crafted the lyre, a musical instrument that would be significant in his dealings with Apollo. When Apollo realized his flock was stolen, he confronted Hermes. But the young god calmed Apollo's rage with the lyre's music. Enthralled by the instrument, Apollo agreed to forgive the theft in return for the lyre, and the two became friends. Acknowledging Hermes' wit and abilities, Apollo presented him with the caduceus, a rod intertwined with two serpents, emblematic of trade and healing. Zeus subsequently named Hermes the messenger of the gods. Although Hermes rose to esteem among the divine, he never abandoned his cunning roots. He was worshiped as the guardian of travelers, but also as the god of thieves, a testament to his renown as a master of deceit. #GreekMythology #OlympianGods #MythicalHeroes #AncientLegends #Zeus #Hermes #Poseidon #Athena #Aphrodite #Apollo #Artemis #Ares #Hades #Hercules #Perseus #Odyssey #Iliad #EpicTales #MythologicalCreatures #MountOlympus #GreekPantheon #MythsAndGods #Demigods #GreekEpics #MythicalQuests #LegendaryMonsters #AncientMyths #Mike_Mica #Illustration #CharacterDesign 🎲

🎲The story of Apollo and Daphne is one of the most famous legends of Greek mythology, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. It all begins when Apollo mocks Eros for his skills as an archer. In response, Eros shoots two arrows: a golden one that causes anyone hit by it to fall in love and a lead one that causes the person to repel love. Apollo is hit by the golden arrow and falls in love with Daphne, a nymph, who is instead struck by the lead arrow. Apollo, hopelessly in love, begins to pursue Daphne who, terrified, tries to escape him. In a desperate attempt to escape, Daphne prays to her father, the river god Peneus, for help. In response, Peneus transforms her into a laurel tree. Despite the transformation, Apollo continues to love her, and, touching the leaves of the tree, he still feels Daphne's warmth. He then decides to make the laurel a sacred symbol, creating crowns to wear with its leaves. The laurel thus becomes the tree sacred to Apollo.🎲 #GreekMythology #OlympianGods #MythicalHeroes #AncientLegends #Apollo #Dafne #Poseidon #Athena #Aphrodite #Apollo #Artemis #Ares #Hades #Hercules #Perseus #Iliad #EpicTales #MythologicalCreatures #MountOlympus #GreekPantheon #MythsAndGods #Demigods #GreekEpics #MythicalQuests #LegendaryMonsters #AncientMyths #Mike_Mica #Illustration #CharacterDesign

What day! Three hours of modern dance, then ballet! Picked up Emily Wilson's new translation of "The Iliad", published today! Her edition of "The Odyssey" is my favorite that I've read, and I am beside myself with the nerd excitement! Oh yes, and a physical fight broke out at the bookstore while I was purchasing my copy. Stay classy Pasadena. #theiliad #theodyssey #homer #classic #classics #classiclit #classicliterature #greekepics #epics #poetry #poems #verse #translation

Still not convinced this is a good way of displaying audiobooks, but it'll suffice for now... After reading The Odyssey, it is the law that you also have to read or at the very least, listen to, The Iliad. It is the very definition of Epic. Blood-soaked and massive in its influence. It is not for the faint of literary heart and takes some focus and determination to get through the slower moving sections. This was the Rouse translation of The Iliad and I also listened to his version of The Odyssey, further increasing my knowledge of Lotus Eaters and how to resist the temptations of a beguiling sorceress... Key conclusion comparing the two books was that Achilles and Odysseus are two very different warriors... Next step in my Greek mythology odyssey is to read some of the swathe of re-tellings that have been published over the past few years ⚔ . . . . #iliad #epic #odyssey #achilles #greekmythology #greekepics #latestaudiobook #booksbooksbooks #latestread #bookstagram #rouse #audiobookstagram #audiobooks #definitionofepic #homer #rousetranslation #theiliad #theiliadandtheodyssey

"𝚃𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚊𝚐𝚎, 𝚖𝚢 𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝: 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚋𝚎𝚎𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚛𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚜𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜." . . The Odyssey is the perfect story to read during Shark Week. Odysseus obviously spends most of his time out at sea during his treacherous journey, and I’m sure he encountered some sharks even if there’s no mention of them. To be fair, the sharks were the least of his worries among the other things he encountered. It makes me wonder if Odysseus would’ve preferred sharks over Scylla and Charybdis or stuck with the familiar. 🤔 Anyway, I always forward to The Odyssey when the Greek mythology unit started in school. Though I do wish we would’ve branched out to other stories as well. 😌 . I hope you all have a happy Thursday! Remember that your name is Nobody if a cyclops asks. ♥️ . 🦈 Sharky Fact: Goblin sharks have pale pink skin that is much softer and flabbier than most other sharks. Their skin also bruises easily. 🦈 . #theodyssey #homer #theiliadandtheodyssey #greekmythology #greekepics #bookflatlay #bookshark #classicbooks #beautifulbookcovers #barnesandnoblecollectibleeditions #bookcollector #readerforlife #theiliad #booksandshells #foiledbooks
