📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚 Beartown By Fredrik Backman ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ / 5 Genre: Fiction Pages: 432 I just cannot get over how well this author writes feelings, expressions, emotions. In a couple of sentences he can wrap up something profound in a way someone else could write a whole book about and never skim the surface. “Love is hard. It makes demands. Hate is simple.” Speaking of skimming the surface… this book is about hockey… small town ice hockey. In Beartown. But that’s not all it’s about- a tragic incident, repercussions, hopes, dreams, courage, secrets, ambiguity, a violent act… bang bang bang. “She’s scared of the darkness, in the middle of the day.” You will be transported into the lives of these characters and you will know them, love them and loathe them. They will remind you of glimpses of what you have seen, heard, experienced, known in your own life. Backman just does this like no other. Can’t wait to read book 2 in this series! This is the second book in the Elements of Cadence duology. Rebecca Ross’s writing is absolutely beautiful. The world building in this book was incredible. The world that Ross created was gorgeous and fascinating. I love how Ross incorporates music into her plots. Music is very important to me, and I love the way it was used in this book. I loved the different perspectives we got as well. The characters are very interesting and they change and grow throughout the book. The romances in the book are absolutely gorgeous. I was nervous I wouldn’t like the book because Adaira was in the west, but I really love what the author did with it and how she connected all of the characters. I love the messages and themes in the story as well. In my opinion, Ross wrapped up the story very well. Ich habe das Gefühl dass durch die ganzen Rezensionen, Reels etc. ich den Kontakt zu euch und den Bookies einfach verloren habe. Da es kaum zu Konversation kommt und ich nur daran denke Hauptsache posten und dann wieder raus. Ja dann wieder raus ! Bei mir ist seit längerem der Wurm drin. Die wirkliche Lust ist auch nicht mehr so wirklich da. Muss ich den jedesmal in der Story posten das ich ein Buch beendet habe ? - vor allem da ich ja so viel im generellen lese. Ich habe genügend Entwürfe und content dass nur bearbeitet werden muss - doch mich wirklich aufraffen will ich nicht. Das Wochenende dafür nutzen will ich nicht. Zur Zeit lese ich einfach nur. Die Hälfte davon wisst ihr nicht mal das ich es gelesen habe. Buchpost zeige ich nur noch gesammelt. Muss aber vorher in die Story dass es angekommen ist. Ihr merkt bei mir rattert es im inneren. Vielmehr hat es damit zu tun, dass ich gerade kein angefangen Buch gefühlt habe. Nur dank meinem BR habe ich wieder die Lust gewonnen die Bücher doch noch zu lesen. Eine Bücher habe ich abgebrochen. Aber nie bekanntgeben da es vor allem Bücher sind von ehemaligen Blogger/ oder gute Autorinnen. Vor allem muss da noch die Mail raus. Follower kommen und gehen und machen mich so unmotiviert. Dabei jedoch völlig übersehen, was alles noch in diesem Buch steckt. Wir begleiten Annabelle auf dem Weg nach Oxford. Als eine der ersten Frauen, die dort „studieren“ dürfen. Natürlich durften Frauen zu dieser Zeit, nicht so wie Männer, Prüfungen ablegen oder gar einen akademischen Grad erlangen. Das passierte in Oxford erst 1920… Annabelle bekommt ein Stipendium. Dadurch muss sie sich der damalige Frauenbewegung anschließen und lernt somit Lucie, Hattie und Catriona kennen. Ganz bemerkenswert hat die Autorin hier die Geschichte der Suffragetten (Frauenbewegung England) eingearbeitet. Mit viel geschichtlichen Hintergrund und Themen, die bis heute zum nachdenken anregen. Natürlich vergesse ich die Liebesgeschichte hier kein Stück. Sie war wundervoll. Ich liebe es, dass wir es hier mit einer starken Frau zu tun haben die dennoch der Liebe verfällt. Aber weicht sie dadurch von ihrem Weg ab ?? 📖 Avis lecture📖 Bonjour ☺️, Passionnés d’histoire ce livre est pour vous! Les auteurs nous emmènent vivre les derniers jours de 20 grandes reines. De Cléopatre à la reine Astrid. En passant par Alienor, Sissi, Marie-Antoinette, Victoria ou la tsarine Alexandra. Et c’est tout simplement passionnant. Chaque chapitre revient sur la vie de chacune et se termine avec une bibliographie pour aller plus loin. C’est instructif, vivant et parfois même émouvant. Le tour de force de ce documentaire est de se lire comme un roman! Bien entendu, selon nos préférences et sensibilités, nous serons plus attachés à certains récits que d’autres mais tous sont d’une grande qualité autant historique que narrative. I thought I'd jump aboard the #readinghabitstag when I saw it from Melanie @avonlea_booknerd. The photo speaks for itself. Coming across secondhand kids' fiction with lovely old dust jackets makes me happy. They are among the very best remnants of the 20th century. So here goes. Current read: I've almost finished The Family From One End Street, which you see in the spread. Genres I typically avoid: I'm afraid it's medical dramas for me. They trigger my anxiety. It's a shame when these are recommended or written by good friends, but peace of mind is a precious and frail thing 😉 Worst Reading Habits: I'm going to blame book blogging and #bookstagram for this one. It's not re-reading excellent books once I've reviewed them. My self-imposed schedule prompts me to keep moving on to new material. But since I believe the benefits of re-reading are valuable, I'm aiming to get over this bad habit. Do I always read the synopsis?: Yeah, definitely, along with blurbs and reviews. Apart from helping me not waste my time on books I wouldn't enjoy, I appreciate the little carrots of anticipation which we'd miss if we begin novels with no clues whatsoever. This is way different from seeking spoilers. Favourite Reading Format: The paperback, closely followed by the hard cover. E-books have their place but there's nothing like physically turning pages. New or Used Books: I've become a great fan of used or secondhand, as the photo shows. Along with the jumps back in time, they are far more economical. I do buy the occasional brand new book though. 💙 BLUE MONDAY REVIEW 💙 @womensprize shortlist - book 1 I spent this weekend immersed in an unnamed woman’s experience of early motherhood thanks to Claire Kilroy’s incredible Soldier Sailor. Although a fairly short book the impact is not lessened in any way. This book left a visceral impression and I was transported back to the anxiety, isolation, confusion and overwhelm of those early months and years. Very much a feminist exploration of the experience of motherhood, the husband in this book is utterly useless and I was left furious with him at several points. But there is balance as ‘the friend’ is portrayed as a fantastic father - this is not a book which simply rubbishes men in order to explore the experience of women. “A new mother is not peaceful but in a jittery state of high alert. We declare her serene so we can leave her to it. So we can behold the glittering surface, remark on its beauty, and walk away”. I loved this book and consider it a fantastic start to my Women’s Prize reading this year. I have five more of the shortlist to get through before the winner is announced on 12 June but Soldier Sailor is an auspicious start. I look forward to the rest of my reading. I listened to this on audio today while I was painting doors. (We are in the midst of some renovations.) It was a recommendation from the @booktalketc podcast. It’s a novella set in rural Ireland about a little girl sent to live with another family for a summer. She doesn’t know when she will return home, but finds when she gets there that this home is full of love, and much different from the house she came from. 📚 Book Review - In Cheap We Trust The Story of a Misunderstood American Virtue by Lauren Weber ⭐⭐⭐ This was from my TBR shelf and satisfied the "I" of my journey this year to read the alphabet... I kinda chopped off the author's name, so I made sure to list it above. I received this from a @goodreads win in 2009. I went to review it, also, on Goodreads and founds this: "This is interesting. It's one of those books that makes you want to make someone else close to you read -- so you can discuss it. There are a lot of points Weber makes that point to why we got here (this economic mess)." Ha! This is what I wrote in 2009 - and I forgot I read it - DUH - even when I put it on my "currently reading" status. But, I needed an "I" book for my reading the alphabet challenge, and I wanted to take as many books from my TBR bookshelf, so mission accomplished. All I can say is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. 2009 certainly was a volatile time, but 2024 is pretty messy, too! Who knows what the future will hold?! ☀️ Good Sunday Morning Besties ☀️ How are you all doing??? Whatcha up to today??? . . I gotta tell you guys that I have been feeling amazing these last few days. I’ve been on a low fat diet along with watching my macros and I have already seen a drastic changes in my body. I used to eat a lot of fast food and premade meals and I could just feel myself bloating so bad after every meal. I’ve decided enough is enough and I’m no longer going to be eating out! Plus it’s expensive! My husband and I have been buying fresh ingredients at our local food market and have been making the most delicious foods!! My bloating has vanished and I feel overall more energetic!!! It’s crazy how much the food you put into your body impacts your mental health. Since my return from Cuba, a month ago now, I've read two memoir-style biographies about Ernest Hemingway, and reread his autofictional 'Moveable Feast.' I know more about the man than I ever did before. Some good, some not so good, perhaps, but I will not criticize the man, or stand in judgment, now. After all, Hemingway was a great writer, one who'd cast a bigger shadow than I could ever hope to cast. I’m not saying a fabulous suspense novel is the perfect accompaniment to monitoring swim classes, but… yes, I suppose I’m saying exactly that. I’ve read mixed reviews about “The Housemaid,” but I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I started this book a month or two ago and became so deliciously anxious I had to stop around chapter 30…. but I’m about to grow a pair and jump back in 😆 If that’s not the mark of a good suspense novel, I don’t know what is. Everyone in this story has a secret, and the tension has been building unbearably. There’s an attic bedroom that ominously locks from the outside, a creepy little girl who only wears starched dresses (I picture a hybrid between the twins from “The Shining” movie and Carol Anne from “Poltergeist”), a stay at home mom who is at turns obsessive about every tiny detail and also a walking pig-pen, a too good to be true businessman husband (recalling that Olympia Dukakis line from “Steel Magnolias” circa 1989, that he’s so perfect he may as well have “been carved from cream cheese”… which feels extra terrifying), and a handsome Italian gardener, who repeatedly warns the protagonist she’s in danger (in broken English, with haunted eyes). The proverbial shit is about to hit the fan, and I feel as if I’m teetering at the starting drop of a massive rollercoaster- and that alone is delicious, whatever happens from here. And have I mentioned the protagonist is an ex-convict who was estranged from her family, for reasons the author has yet to reveal?
