Basil is a heat-loving annual plant grown for use as a culinary herb. Many varieties exist, with subtle differences in flavour, growth habit, leaf colour, and so on. All have a rich, pungent taste and scent reminiscent of anise and cloves. This plant has been cultivated for over 5,000 years, originally from India to Persia, but has spread globally. The ancient Greeks knew about basil and its culinary and medicinal properties. Curiously, many ancient Romans believed that basil seeds would not germinate unless first being cursed. Though we tend to think of it as an Italian herb, basil is a very common ingredient in the cuisines of Southeast Asia where Thai Basil and Holy Basil are more common, with their undertones of mint and liquorice, and slightly more intense flavour. In Pakistan, Holy Basil is grown near the entrances of some homes in an effort to keep evil spirits from entering. Several compact varieties of basil have also been bred. These tend to form tidier plants with smaller leaves, but with every bit of flavour.

It was a sad day this morning when I checked on my plant babies. Two of my basil seedlings were just flopped over like this. I’m thinking it’s a case of dampening off from overwatering. This is the first year I have used coco coir and I’m finding it difficult to figure out how much to water because it seems to hold so much more moisture than regular seed starting mix. Hopefully they are the only two who succumb and the rest make it through!

An interesting aspect of interspecies hybrid basil is that the offspring might take on characteristics different than both the parents. For example it’s common for hybrids to have almost indeterminate flower growth where the flowers just get longer and longer. (See slide 2). 》 Perform some plant surgery and snip just below the node 》 Remove leaves below the node (if any) and some of the top leaves. Leave 2-4 leaves on top for photosynthesis, but we want the energy to be put into root production, not managing too many leaves. 》 Place cutting in a clear container with water covering the cut end. Rest the leaves outside the water. 》 Leave on a sunny window sill and be sure to maintain the water level. Top up or refresh the water as needed (usually every 2-3 days). 》 With 2-4 weeks of patience (that's the hardest part), there should be some nice roots ready for planting! (I left mine way longer than necessary because I'm lazy 😅, but as soon as there's an inch or so of white roots, you're good to go). 》 Plant in a pot or in the garden in some soil with good drainage and watch it grow! 🐞The last slide was a paid assistant. One of my happy places is in the kitchen processing raw ingredients from my garden, and preserving them. During summer, I'm able to make enough pesto sauce, in several batches, to last for the winter months. I use it with pasta, chicken, seafood and risottos. I'm hooked on making peach and tomato salsa lately. It's all ingredients from my garden. So healthy and it just fills your mouth with sunshine. I paired it with pesto chicken pasta with homemade pesto from my garden, once again. Tomorrow I'm making more tomato sauce, peach ice cream and lots more pesto before the basil flowers. This time of year is so productive, even in my tiny garden. I'm currently harvesting strawberries, tomatoes, spring onions, lettuce, zucchini flowers and lots of herbs. The start of our gardening journey🌱. We’ve started in pots so that anything we grow, we can move to our new home (when we actually get one)! All of the little pots sit in the base of the big ones to eventually create our mini potted forest gardens (which I now understand so much more since reading @goodlife_permaculture’s fab new book!!) We’ve got Back L to R - Frangipani, Dwarf Eureka Lemon, Dwarf Tahitian Lime Front L to R - Ginger, Marjoram, 2 x Basil, 2x Marigold, Rosemary (which is growing from a cutting from my parents bush) and not so happy little Lavender.
