Parents increasingly organise entertainment – ranging from play dates and sports and music classes to family cinema trips – for their children, rather than letting them come up with it themselves. Perhaps this can help explain recent reports that many teenagers today choose to be holed up in their bedrooms. The lack of childhood freedom isn’t just a result of parental control. Societal expectations and school policies also have huge influences. It is important to note that constraints to freedom often stem from well-meaning intentions, such as safety concerns (location tracking, for example) or cultural norms. Understandably, nobody wants to be the parent who lets their kid take (perceived) risks if others don’t. But there are risks to over-protecting children too. It can inadvertently hinder their psychological development. A lack of independence can undermine young people’s sense of agency and control over their lives. And research in psychology consistently demonstrates that when people, young or old, feel powerless and constrained by external forces, such as parental supervision or societal expectations, it can lead to frustration, helplessness and low self-esteem. This symptom makes one feel ashamed for having such feelings, but it's actually common in terms of growing up in childhood trauma.⁠ ⁠ What this looks like:⁠ ⁠ *balking at what you might perceive to be coddling⁠ *charged emotions around fairness - like seeing a toddler getting their way at a restaurant⁠ *charged emotions at recognizing development (you made your lunch at six years old, why can't they?)⁠ *seeing your step or your own children having it so easy⁠ *seeing families be child centric when you grew up in adult centric (they came first)⁠ ⁠ Why does this bother us?⁠ ⁠ Inner children, whether we like to admit or not, keep score and are rooted in fairness. They watch, and we often have an overdeveloped sense of fairness.⁠ ⁠ We can also unconsciously be reiterating abusive family values such as "children shouldn't be allowed THAT much disruption or say in things" or "everyone sinks or swims...figure it out kid."⁠ ⁠ Due to this, we can get into power struggles and irritation about how we see kids⁠ getting parented. Ours or otherwise.⁠ ⁠ Just know you're not alone, but that it is a sign that you didn't get what you needed.⁠ I'm not saying some children aren't coddled or infantilized, but given how we were all raised, we are not exactly experts on what defines healthy, child-focused, developmentally appropriate⁠ parenting.⁠ ⁠ I was often baffled at seeing kids grow up in safety, and I confused that for entitlement and special treatment. I joke with clients that I was a super obedient and compliant child because the aggression and shame by my parents was effective-they relate. I wasn't allowed to be a developmentally appropriate annoyance, but many kids actually are. ‘My role, as parent, is to make sure my child feels understood. It is not my child’s job to make sure I feel understood’. J. Milburn Ironically, this behaviour is more common than it should ever be. I hear many stories of children feeling that they need to look after, nurture or meet the emotional needs of their mother or father. The other day I was at a Christmas party, and heard one of the young children say, ‘If I said that Mummy will start crying!’ Interestingly, the question they were speaking about was a choice given to the child whether they wanted a ham or cheese sandwich. The mother was recently vegan and forcing her own choices onto her daughter. The daughter chose the cheese sandwich. Sadly, this young girl was only five and even at that young age she knew she didn’t really have a choice, she was being a offered a choice by her Mum but knew that there was only one answer that she could reply with. Many parents will adopt a position of coercion in the hope to get a child to tidy their room or do something that hasn’t been done. That’s not the same as making a child feel guilty about the choices they make to serve the needs of an insecure parent. However, there are other methods that parents can adopt that will get the bedroom tidied without any coercion. That’s why effective communication is a critical life skill for us all. CONTINUED
