Lo mínimo para que yo diga "ok cumpliste con tu tarea" pero nada. Otros años ha florecido en más ramas y con inflorescencias con mayor cantidad de flores. A shady spot underneath the bay and acer. It was a productive day yesterday, lots of weeding, deadheading, clearing and replanting. I moved some small geums (possibly Pink Petticoats, but they could be Mai Tai?). Planted too close to the salvia’s, they’ve been swamped in the summer, so they now sit in the spot where I had stipa tenuissima which I’ve also moved towards the back of the border as they were taking over the steps. I’ve also planted out the sedums I’ve grown from cuttings and delphiniums grown from seed. Fingers crossed they survive, but they stand a better chance in the ground as they were being eaten in the cold frame. Le Sedum ou Hylotelephium 'Touchdown Teak' est une variété d'orpin d'automne qui séduit par son excellente tenue et ses couleurs assez fantastiques. Cette vivace forme une jolie touffe de tiges rouges garnies de feuilles d'un pourpre violacé très foncé sur laquelle éclosent des bouquets d'un rose soutenu en fin d'été. La floraison est longue, très visitée par les papillons. C'est une plante rustique et sans souci, adaptée aux terrains secs et peu profonds, qui demande très peu d'entretien et donne beaucoup de charme aux rocailles et potées fleuries. Les tiges bien solides ne s'effondrent pas sous le poids des fleurs. La plante atteint environ 35-40 cm de hauteur pour 40 à 50 cm de diamètre. I seem to have forgotten to snap my Sedums (or Hylotelephium) when they were flowering, but they are definitely rising from the ground. Two varieties here: H. 'Autumn Joy' and H. 'Purple Emperor' - but not looking very purple yet. Another reliable perennial in my garden that is very suited to our changing summers and is drought tolerant, its only requirement being a lot of sun. Brings a lot of joy in late summer and into the autumn, widely used en masse by Piet Oudolf in many of his schemes. I’m trying to be really mindful when cutting back perennials at the moment as there are loads of ladybirds still using old plant material as habitat. I kept finding tonnes snuggled up inside these dried hylotelephium flower heads. It was only when I turned them upside down I could spot them. Instead of putting old stalks and seed heads like these into the compost I’m making stacks of spent plant material into little piles around the garden for insects to continue to use as havens. Plant supports seem to work to stop the piles being blown away. GRASS-SCAPE AND SEEDHEADS - RHS Hyde Hall. Decayed beauty holding up well after serious downpours. Top marks for: - Panicum virgatum (various cultivars,strangely none in the photos but looking as though autumn was only just beginning) - Miscanthus sinensis ‘Undine’ (still with full head of plumes) - Hylotelephium Matrona and Herbstfreude (dried-up stems and flower heads decidedly standing while cute new leaves are already waving through at the base). - Galatella: various cultivars of this prolific, late- and long-flowering Aster relative, with super cute tufty seed heads. Expect to see more of it in years to come. - and my favourite: Asclepias incarnata: a herbaceous perennial with a shrubby look about its stems, and delicately elongated seed pods like pulled marshmallow, containing fluffy seeds ready to fly off on the wind and make new plants. 21 January 2024 Hylotelephium telephium 'Touchdown Teak' sprouting. I feel like every time I check this plant name it changes. I bought it as a Sedum, but when I checked in 2020 it was a Hylotelephium, then when I next checked it had changed bank to a Sedum. Now it's Hylotelephium again. Maybe I've imagined it? Winter stems have become a respectable part of the modern garden, but while gardeners have been reluctant to hold onto the structures of herbaceous plants long after their leaves and flowers have finished, the idea itself isn't new. In fact none other than the respected gardener and nurseryman Clarence Elliott wrote about the value of these skeletons of summer in the prestigious magazine 'The Garden' on the 8th of December 1917. "Few folk see the beauty of a border in autumn and winter. It is a haze and not a blaze, and they do not recognise it. They might think the same colours very nice in terms of a tweed suit, but when found in the border a silly garden tradition tells them to cut and burn." "A haze and not a blaze"- very true. In my part of Britain's south western region any chance of a 'blaze' is usually extinguished by winter rains, and even a 'haze' can be difficult to see through the greys of a wet winter. I've been minded for some time to start listing plants that look good through a Cornish or Devonshire winter for some time. Some of you manage to keep the finer ornamental grasses looking good, while for us they become soggy heaps. Nepeta stems turn black and miserable, while most of the more delicate stems struggle to look respectable by January. However there are some plants, such as Phlomis and Hylotelephium (pictured) that do hold their own against the onslaught of wild and wet conditions. There are plants that I must actually 'cut' even at the end of winter, as opposed to raking soggy material away! Some of my gardens are starting to need attention already, so I guess I should probably get on and actually write this list rather than just thinking about it. #gardening #plants #Hylotelephium

Belonging to the same genus as the native H. telephium (kärleksört) and the popular garden plant H. spectabile, this species has a more succulent appearance. The flowers however, clearly give away the connection between these different species. Jetzt bitte kein Aufschrei! 😅 Einerseits empfehle ich euch hier eine „Allerweltssorte“, andererseits unter ihrem aktuellen Namen, der auch mir nur schwer über die Tastatur kommt … Hylotelephium telephium ‘Herbstfreude‘, besser bekannt unter dem Synonym Sedum. Es gibt viele Sorten der Hohen Fetthenne, aber wenn es um eine wirklich stabile geht, lande ich gern immer wieder bei der ‘Herbstfreude‘. Und im Winter, wenn der Schnee mal drauf liegt – ein Gedicht! 😃 Unkompliziert bei der Standortwahl, nach ein paar Jahren leicht zu teilen und andernorts im Garten einzubuddeln. Geht bei mir auch gut in leicht schattigen Lagen. Insekten gehen oft daran, Schnecken aber nicht, … Nur eines sollte man meiden, zu viele Nährstoffe im Boden, vor allem Stickstoff. Wem die Pflanze zu hoch wird oder immer wieder umfällt, empfehle ich den Vorblüteschnitt, durch den die Stile kürzer bleiben und die Blütenstände mehr verzweigen. Sedum as it was known - hylotelephium as it's now known I have a bit of a love hate relationship with the perennials. Upright stems with fleshy succulents leaves appear in the spring and that's the look I'm not so keen on. I not a big fan of succulents and those fleshy leaves (that hold all the moisture so great for dry summers!) And every year I think, oh I don't like those I'll dig them up! And then I get distracted by something (usually another perennial coming into flower!) and the sedum get left behind. But then come late Summer and early autumn and I am always SOOOOO pleased I didn't dig them up. They really do add a wonderful colourful structural dimension to the garden. And in the winter look amazing topped with snow or frost (see end pictures!) not to mention food and shelter for wildlife Then once I see the new shoots in spring it's time to cut them back. Last year mine were a bit floppy with a empty centre - that's time to lift and divide which I will do this spring. Replant in other places around the garden - giving me order in the border, for free There are lots of different shades of pink and red around and some with deliciously dark leaves and stems too! I think mine is Autumn Joy but not sure??
