Just sharing some sunny photos from last weekend to remind myself what the sunshine looks like! We visited @dunsboroughpark to see the tulips, which were beautiful. Dunsborough Park is a hidden gem in Ripley in Surrey, with pretty gardens and a charity tea and cake stall. It’s only open a few weeks a year, so follow their Instagram page for opening days. I might have been chilly in a summer dress, but there has been little opportunity to take a sunny photo in a floral dress this spring. A little bit about me.My name is Loulou , I live in North Wiltshire not too far from the Somerset border and on the edge of the Cotswolds near the famous and oh so photogenic villages of Castle Combe and Lacock often used for TV series and film sets. Lovely to take a break away from the Chelsea pre-build frenzy and spend time at one of my local National Trust gardens - the historic Hinton Ampner estate in Hampshire to film our Chelsea garden story for @NationalTrust. After the filming was done, I couldn’t resist a guided tour from Head Gardener Chris Skinner, exploring the immaculately preserved Georgian-style landscape gardens that Ralph Dutton so passionately revived in the 1930s. Despite considering himself an “amateur,” Dutton’s vision was extraordinary and ambitious – to craft an outstanding 20th-century reinterpretation of the Georgian landscaping tradition. He definitely succeeded, using design principals that still inform garden layouts today. Dutton’s influential philosophy of “concealing and revealing the bounds” is supremely evident, with plant-filled garden rooms cocooning you in intoxicating plantings, the surrounding clipped hedges revealing dramaticun glimpses of the surrounding chalk down countryside beyond. From the architectural sunken garden to the meandering meadows, his deft hand balanced formality with naturalism, something contemporary designers still strive to do successfully today. Among the highlights were Dutton’s celebrated connoisseur plants like the buzzing with bees Berberis valdiviana and wonderfully fragrant Viburnum x carlcephalum. Chris’s deep knowledge brought the decades of dedication behind @hintonampnernationaltrust’s exceptional beauty to life - an inspiring reminder to stay rooted in horticultural traditions while pushing the boundaries as we move into the build stage of our Chelsea design. Hinton Ampner’s gardens are a must for any garden design enthusiast. A first visit to Ashwood Nursery and @garden.johns today. As I look back through the pictures on my phone I am struck by the fact I took very few and only towards the end of the visit. It is because I was simply captivated and entranced by the sheer beauty and atmosphere of the place which left no room for anything other than absorbing the sights, sounds, scents and the spirit of the place. A sunny cool April morning may have been the best time to be there, with all things in their Spring glory, from the tiniest ferns, up through carpets of Spring perennials, shrubs coming into bud and leaf, through the birdsong layer and tree canopy and up to the tumble of white clouds against a pure blue sky. Or it may be that the genius of the master planter and a wonderfully talented team were on fine show. Either way I have seldom visited a garden I felt I could have sat and stayed and just absorbed the magic for hours or days. And when all the senses were sated, joined the staff in a few hours light maintenance for the sheer pleasure of being able to work in this little Eden.
