He tells +972 why Israel’s assault on Gaza propelled him into action. /// “Since the war began, I understood that I have an obligation to make my voice heard, and to call for an end to the cycle of violence.” These were the words of Ben Arad, an 18-year-old Israeli conscientious objector, shortly before he reported to the Israeli army’s recruitment center near Tel Aviv on April 1 and declared his refusal to enlist in mandatory military service, in protest of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and the long-standing occupation. Arad is the third Israeli teenager to publicly refuse the draft for political reasons since October 7, and was tried and sentenced to an initial 20 days in military prison. He follows Tal Mitnick, who has served 105 days in prison across three sentences, and Sofia Orr, who has served 40 days in prison across two sentences — neither of whom have yet been exempted from military service, meaning they may still be sentenced to further stints in prison. Born in Ramat Hasharon not far from Tel Aviv, Arad has spent the past few months volunteering at Kibbutz Mashabei Sadeh in the Negev/Naqab desert, where he worked with youth from the kibbutz and in schools in the nearby Bedouin village of Bir Hadaj. Like many other Israeli teens completing what is known as a “year of service” before the army this year, Arad was informed that the program had been cut short due to the war, and that he would therefore have to enlist in the army in April rather than December. She was showing signs of senility, and because her daughter had a #deformity of her hands and feet, the neighbours accused her of having used her daughter as a pony to ride to the #Devil. The trial was conducted very quickly by the sheriff, who had judged them both #guilty and #sentenced them to be #BurnedAtTheStake. The daughter managed to escape, but Janet was #stripped, #SmearedWithTar, paraded through the town on a barrel and #BurnedAlive. Nine years after her #death the #WitchcraftActs were repealed in #Scotland. Janet Horne was also a generic name for witches in the north of Scotland at the time and this makes it difficult to determine what the real name of this woman may have been. Terrorism laws are being manipulated politically to stifle independent media voices and prevent reliable journalistic coverage in Kashmir. Respect for press freedom has declined dramatically in Kashmir since its semi-autonomous status under India’s 1950 constitution was repealed in August 2019 and it was placed under New Delhi’s direct control. In the past five years, the region has recorded 13 cases of detention of journalists. As general elections approach in India, we call for a drastic change in policy towards journalists in this region, which has become a black hole for news and information as a result of wholesale persecution over the years. La diffusion de La Dépêche avait déjà été suspendue le 4 mars pour une durée de 3 mois par la Haute autorité de l'audiovisuel et de la communication (HAAC). Le journaliste est visé par 7 chefs d’inculpation dont “diffusion de fausses nouvelles”, à la suite de la publication d’un article datée du 28 février dans lequel il met en cause la responsabilité de l’État dans l’affaire du meurtre d’un proche du président Faure Gnassingbé tué par balle en mai 2020. L’enfermement d’Apollinaire Mewenemesse montre à quel point l'étau se resserre autour des journalistes et des médias à l'approche des élections législatives au Togo. Le nombre de charges retenues contre lui à la suite de la publication d’un article et la durée de la suspension de son journal sont disproportionnées. Elles visent vraisemblablement à intimider les professionnels de l’information qui enquêtent sur des sujets impliquant des proches du pouvoir en place. "Trapped" I am sitting in a room without windows, shrouded in darkness. The walls are cold and unrelenting, they enclose me. Every breath is an effort, every thought a burden. I feel trapped, shackled by invisible chains that bind me to this place. The first step towards freedom seems unattainable. It is as if I am kicking against a wall of steel that refuses to give way. And when I manage to take that first step, it feels like a huge victory. But then comes the next wall, and the next, and the next. Every little negativity throws me back into the hole I just crawled out of. It's an invisible evil that holds me back. It's like a shadow that haunts me, a whisper in my ear reminding me that I'm not good enough, that I can't make it. It's a constant battle, an endless war against myself. I may appear healthy and strong on the outside, but on the inside I am broken. It's as if I've shattered into a thousand pieces and every attempt to put myself back together only causes more pain. All that is left of me is a scream, a silent cry of despair that fades into the darkness. But despite all this darkness, despite all this pain, there is hope. There is always hope. Because even in the darkest night there are stars, and even in the deepest hole there is a way out. It is hard, it is painful, but it is possible. And this thought, this tiny flame of hope, is what keeps me going. So, when you feel lost in the darkness, when you feel like you can't go on, remember these words: you are stronger than you think.
