Mother's Day is a painful reminder about death, dying & grief. It reminds me of the sorrow of grief and the realization that everyone who loved me on Contentnea Creek Homeland is buried at Rest Haven & Roundtree (Old Fellows) Cemeteries. And, as grief opens a scarred heart wound that never fully heals, the sadness of not holding a baby that I gave birth to in my arms stabs my whole being. But, I'm finally growing to realize that the compassion, support, and love that I share for children that other women have given birth to is a blessing. It truly takes a village to raise a child. It's comfort in being an Aunty, and it's a sea of children who need someone to love and support them. The land gives me Shaky, Patti, JAS & Jazz. Plus Josh, Nick, DaQuan, Marwan, Moon Bug, Savannah, Jehlani, and Mia. And, the middle schoolers in my life at YGIG. I'm learning every day that the healing soothing balm to pain and sorrow is LOVE. Just see people for who and what they are without judgment or ridicule. I'm learning to show compassion and mercy in a society that is using bullying and intimidation to support an agenda based on fear and vengeance in a misguided effort to hurt people who are perceived as being different. Trying to pay back meanness is a loose-loose situation for all of us. So, on this Mother's Day, I wish everyone preserving, steadfast faith, and unshakable hope. Life is fragile for all of us on Planet Earth, and every breath is precious. Happy Mother's Day! #mothersday #mother #motherlove #motherlove❤️ #love #compassionate #hope #steadfastfaith #joy #understanding #mercy #support #mentor #teacher #indigenouswomen #indigenousways #indigenouswaysofknowing

Alberta Teachers Shout out to the ATA. Our book study of Wayi Wah! Indigenous Pedagogies: An Act for Reconciliation and Anti-Racist Education Book by Jo Chrona is finished. An outstanding book. A colleague had a couple of these Stepping Stone resources from the ATA. They produced 18 pamphlets in the set. They are available free online. I reached out to the ATA - Walking Together and they sent us a free set for every teacher in our book club, each teacher gets a hard copy of all 18! We plan to read these next. We think we have picked out our next Indigenous pedagogies in education book but are still open. Has anyone read a book we should look at? #indigenouswaysofknowing

Cree Moon Using the YouTube resource by Etienna Moostoos-Lafferty about Cree moons, we learned about Ayikipisim - frog moon. These visual journal pages are from my grade partners room as ours are not finished yet. To draw this frog, we used the How to draw a realistic frog from Art Hub for Kids. We then read a book about a frog lifecycle. Once the frog is on the page, students will be given the freedom to finish the page how they wish. As you can see many are documenting the life cycle of a frog. I bought a frog life cycle resource from an Instagram teacher - @earlyyearsoutdoor #seasonalchanges #Creemoons #indigenouswaysofknowing

I’ve been in a state of inner discomfort for a couple years now. I see where the overculture has taken root in my psyche. I’ve come to a place where there is a battle, a reckoning, a rodeo + a ceremony converging. My mind, my heart, my body + my spirit are having a conference. My ancestors + the dark forces are boxing. As I heal + discover my power + claim my gifts + dharma - there is great protest at my heels.Nipping like fierce dogs ready to take me down. I’ve been quieter lately.Words at the tip of my tongue + the edge of my heart.Longing to spill forth beauty, power + spirit medicine. But then I feel something grip at my throat, clasp around my heart + feel that incessant nipping at my heels to make me feel unsteady.I hear voices tell me it’s not okay for me to grow anymore, I’m not worthy, I’m not good enough, I haven’t learned enough yet, I’m asking too much, that I should stay low, stay hidden + just be happy with what I have. This conference of voices has had me trippin’ up on my beauty walk for awhile now + as I have observed, listened + gotten sceptical + downright annoyed, I realize these voices come from an intersection of my generational trauma, my generational gifts + my colonial conditioning. I am walking in two worlds trying to balance teachings that are so vastly different from one another + I get yanked + pulled in opposite directions daily. As I finally expose this inner battle, tears emerge, my heart is racing, anger surfaces.I am both fed up + filled w/ a compassionate ache. So I parse + piece out the voices in this web of being that seek to squash my flame.I’m learning to dance when they trip me, to sing when I can’t speak, to write when I’m in doubt, to stay humble + ask for more. Now I see.I am the bridge that brings these two worlds together.I am the vessel they get to work out the kinks + rectify the wrongs. I am the power embodied. They bring the poison + I make it medicine. So I will stay here in this battle + I will open even more. B/c you know what…I don’t think those are just dogs nipping at my heels + I need not fear them. For I think they are my wild power Pushing me forward. I think actually, I am Running with wolves

Even as a professional Youth #PeerSupport Worker, I still struggle to advocate for myself in doctor’s appointments. There are many factors contributing to this but the main reasons are: 🌟 Years of masking undiagnosed neurodivergence where my internal experiences were not validated or understood. 🌟 The inherent invisible hierarchy that is present in practitioner —> patient interactions, understandably so given how we are taught to respect & believe people with more knowledge & power than us will automatically know what we need better than we might. 🌟 Limiting time constraints of most doctor’s appointments. 🌟 Unconscious bias all doctors have, whether they’re aware of it or not, due to their unique upbringings and experiences. So, I wanted to share a compiled set of actions I try to take to ensure appointments go as smoothly as possible, leaving me feeling like I said everything I wanted to say, stood up for myself, and have a solid plan for ‘next steps.’ I hope these are helpful for you, too! Let me know in the comments if you have any tips that have helped you advocate for yourself in doctor’s appointments! 🤗 • • • • • • #doctorsappointment #advocate #advocateforyourself #healthcareforall #healthcareburnout #healthdisparities #healthdiscrimination #unconsciousbias #peersupport #peersupportspecialist #peersupportworker #peersupporttips #peersupportisradical #indigenouswaysofknowing #indigenouswaysofbeing #unbiasedhealthcare #knowyourrights #wellnessjourney #wellnesstips #chronicillnessawareness #chronicillnesssupport #mecfs #mecfsawareness #mecfswarrior #chronicallyill #burnoutrecovery #burnoutsyndromes #systemicracism #systemicoppressionkills

It's Time! Count Down to the Indigenous Fashion Arts Festival Workshop in Toronto, Ontario. This week's To Do List includes organizing Give-A-Way. My indigo-dyed clothes pins will become keepsake refrigerator magnets. My stash of batik fat quarters will be the workshop tote bags with a matching quilted book. Tote bags will contain all the workshop kit supplies. This week I will begin making live videos demonstrating how to finish an Eastern Woodlands hand-made wool blanket. Makadewaabikizi - The Sun Turns Black (Solar Eclipse) On April 8, 2024 here on Treaty 1 we will experience a partial solar eclipse with a total eclipse happening towards the East. This is a sacred reunion between Dibiki-Giizis (Moon) and Giizis (Sun). The energy provided by the solar eclipse can impact our bodies, moods, minds, and spirits greatly. Since Dibiki-Giizis is known to impact water. Our bodies are made of mostly water. So, if you are experiencing high emotions or fatigue during this time, listen to your body. It is okay to rest. It is okay to heal. It is okay to slow down and take the time for yourself. This time can be used for prayers. To create moon water. Moon Ceremonies may be going on today as well. I will leave today with the story of Nanaboozhoo and the Disappearing Sun. One day as Nanaboozhoo was walking across the great plains, a sudden chill came upon him. He looked around to see the normally scurrying animals, in hiding. He looked around when he realized that the plains were completely silent. He shivered as the chill ran down his spine. Then suddenly, the once full daylight quickly turned to night. Nanaboozhoo became really nervous as the shadow grew across the sky. All creatures turned their eyes away from the blanket of darkness. Nanaboozhoo stood there looking up at dark spot in the sky, nervously looking for Giizis. The realization came to him to close his eyes. He quickly sat down, and started to smoke his sacred pipe. After a few moments, Dibiki-Giizis started to move. Letting Giizis start to shine again. Nanaboozhoo felt great relief. He realized he saw how Nookomis Giizis (Grandmother Moon) and Omishoomisan Giizis (Grandfather Sun) came together to honour their relationship. This was a sacred purpose. Makadewaabikizi - The Sun Turning Black. This teaches us about the importance of renewal and rebirth. The temporary disappearance of the Sun reminds us to live our lives to the fullest. #Indigenouswaysofknowing #solareclipse #anishinaabe #nanaboozhoo

Total solar eclipses are relatively rare, but partial solar eclipses are relatively common. People belonging to the Anishinaabe (also known Chippewa or Ojibwe) have various stories and legends about eclipses. These stories are not just stories – they are representations of a worldview where celestial bodies (the planets, moon, sun, and stars) interact with the world, human lives, and even in concepts of afterlife and rebirth. #totaleclipse #indigenouswaysofknowing

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer is possibly the most important book of our time. I have been slowly reading it over the past year and lovingly absorbing its teachings into my body, mind, and spirit. I have never read a book like this before: I don’t tend to read non-fiction; and, I usually devour books in days or possibly weeks, but never months. This book was different, every line was profound and left me contemplating, sighing, crying, expanding. I had to pause to absorb its teachings into every cell of my being, every layer of skin, every molecule of water. I folded countless corners so that I could come back to pages to re-read and highlight the parts that clung the strongest to my soul. I am going to try to summarize the essential teachings. I am confident I cannot do it justice, and therefore, you must read it yourself. Hopefully my words inspire to to get a copy now. We have two choices in our lives. We can continue as we are, living in an unsustainable way, where belongings are celebrated, and belonging is devalued. Or, we can look to the Earth and all of her beings, animals, plants, water, and to the teachings of Indigenous communities around the globe for guidance for how to realign ourselves with a way of living that equally honours all life on Earth, not only the lives of every single living person from every remote corner, but also all the lives of the plants and animals too, from the turtles and salamanders to the lichen, cedar trees and sweetgrass. Our possessions don’t make us rich or healthy or happy, our connections to each other and the natural world can lead us to a connected, healthy, happy life. Knowing this, I am changed. So, how do I move forward with this understanding? I try to spend as much time in nature as possible. I read and read and read, next up is Richard Wagamese’s One Drum, Stories and Ceremonies for a Planet. I prioritize connections with people. I teach my children and my students the value of Indigenous Ways of Knowing. And, I encourage everyone to read Braiding Sweetgrass because together we can choose the grass path upon which we may walk barefoot. My deepest gratitude to Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Niskipisim - Goose Moon Nearly every month, weather dependent, we go to the forest for land based learning. This month we couldn't go down the hill into the forest because of icy conditions. We walk to our 🌳 Deciduous tree. Under this tree, we began with a land acknowledgement. We sit in a circle and talk. This month we talked about seasonal changes ( what the animals, birds and insects are doing, what are the plants doing & the spring equinox). When we finish learning, we offer tobacco to our tree to express gratitude for the lessons the forest shares with us. This month, we played in the snow. We also brought some ribbons that were cut into the size of a Goose's wingspan. I'm not Indigenous so I use the information shared with us by Etienna Moostoos-Lafferty on her YouTube channel. When we returned to class, we worked on a visual journal page to document what we learned. Each student is encouraged to create a page that represents their understanding. #indigenouswaysofknowing #landbasedlearning #forestschoolcanada #foresteducation #grade1science

In this passionate, hopeful film, Indigenous Elders and spiritual leaders apply their wisdom and knowledge to the healing of Mother Earth and Her inhabitants. Stunning images and eight wisdom keepers from diverse traditions guide viewers into the world of ceremony and spiritual renewal. They urge us to remember who we really are – that if we go back in time far enough, we all come from a culture of ceremony that, if applied today, can restore us to balance. For centuries, dog sledding has been more than just a mode of transportation—it's a way of life rooted in tradition and survival. For Alaska Native people, dogsledding was essential for traversing vast distances, hunting, gathering, and connecting with neighboring communities. Today, we still preserve the skill set through events like the Iditarod and the Kusko 300. Learn more about cultural tourism when you try out dog sledding with a local kennel! 🌹🌹farm friends, sometimes you have to tend our community! This week I got to travel up to Nuu-chah-nulth territory to visit and share with a food is medicine sister🦅Nitanis invited me up to skill share and share about our farm and our food practices at their Indigenous Food Sovereignty conference. It was a beautiful reunion in lands that are so similar to my ancestral homelands. Their longhouse, their seafoods and their teachings were just what I needed too! I love our community care. 🌊💧 Urgent Call to Action! 💧🌊 Did you know that several Indigenous communities across Canada are currently under boil advisories? Access to clean water is not just a luxury—it's a fundamental human right. Yet, far too many Indigenous people are denied this basic necessity. Water is life. It sustains us, nourishes us, and connects us to our environment and each other. But when communities are forced to boil water for safety, it's a stark reminder of systemic injustices and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. We must stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and take action to ensure access to clean, safe water for all. This is not just an Indigenous issue—it's a human rights issue. Let's raise our voices, advocate for change, and work towards a future where everyone has equal access to this essential resource. #CleanWaterForAll #IndigenousRights #HumanRights #SafeWater #DecolonizeWater #AdvocateForChange #IndigenousWaysofknowing&doing #WorldWaterDay

Ok so one of my late-night banners got a little bit wordy. But the other one couldn’t be simpler. What could it look like to DECOLONISE COUNTRY? Just imagine. We all acknowledge this as stolen land, and we know that where settlers have depleted the landscape to catastrophic levels in 200 years, indigenous peoples kept it pristine for 65,000+ Hmmmmmm…. #landback #decolonise #indigenouswaysofknowing #endnativeforestlogging #climatecrisis

World Social Work Day 💜 World Social Work Day's theme is ‘Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change’, which emphasizes the need for social workers to adopt innovative, community-led approaches that are grounded in Indigenous wisdom and harmonious coexistence with nature.  Today, on #wswd2024 let's recognize the power of Indigenous wisdom and the critical need for #socialwork practices to be rooted in that wisdom. An outstanding resource to decolonize your mind and social work practice is the book Decolonizing Therapy by @decolonizingtherapy Dr. Jennifer Mullan. Dr. Mullan's book will definitely challenge your way of doing social work and therapy. As she best says: "The personal is political, the political is personal." Access to healthcare is political and that highly incorporates access to mental health.  Wellness needs to be rooted in community. Indigenous Peoples have been saying and proving this since times immemorial.  Like this tiny and fragile hand, treat every person you encounter in your practice with gentleness, kindness, respect and honor as they deserve nothing less yet even more. 🫶 Let's take care of each other ✨ #decolonize #therapy #socialwork #healthcare #mentalhealth #emotionalhealth #indigenous #indigenouswaysofknowing #dobetter #kindness #compassion #community

Happy Spring Equinox! Spring is the time of planting new ideas and implementing goals and visions. In the spring, the oak tree experiences new life; sap starts flowing within its veins. Soon after, the oak tree starts to grow buds. So it is with human beings. (Don L. Coyhis, Meditations with Native American Elders, pg. v) Spring Cleaning: ▪️What spaces can I physically declutter to find more space and ease in my life? ▪️Are there emotional or mental spaces that could also use some spring cleaning? ▪️What thought patterns and/or emotional patterns might you be ready to let go of to create space for new and healthier patterns? #Spring #SpringEquinox #IndigenousWaysofKnowing #Indigenous

🎶 Get ready to groove with frequencies on March 22! 🎶 Ever seen sand on a table dance into stunning patterns and shapes, seemingly moving on its own? This captivating phenomenon is a beautiful demonstration of the concept of #frequency in action. #Chladniplates are flat metal or glass plates that use a fine powder, like sand, to demonstrate these 2D standing wave patterns. When sprinkled on the plates, and vibrated at just the right frequency, sand collects along the nodal lines creating intricate patterns known as #Chladnifigures. These figures illustrate the vibrational nodes of the plate, and are often used in physics demonstrations to visualize sound waves and resonance. 👉 Picture sand dancing away from the high points, and hanging out where things are chill. It's like a colourful, musical art show for science lovers! (slide 2 shows chladni figures at 5201 hz!) Explore this and so much more at the next #IndigenousScienceNight on March 22! And remember, the next time you're feeling those vibrations, you're not just making noise, you're making science! ✨ 🎟️ Link in bio for more and to secure tickets.

Frequencies. Quantum. Spirit. Connection between them, lies in the understanding of the interconnectedness of all things in the universe. #Indigenousscience often emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living beings and the natural world. Many indigenous cultures view the universe as a vast web of relationships, where everything is interdependent. The concept of vibrational frequencies is central to understanding the relationship between humans, nature, and the cosmos. These frequencies are seen as influencing each other, shaping the harmony and balance of the natural world. Indigenous practices such as drumming, chanting, and ceremonies also often incorporate rhythmic patterns and vibrations to connect with spiritual energies and achieve states of heightened consciousness. Experience, drumming, dancing, and all things #Frequencies at the next #IndigenousScienceNight at Spark - one-night-only focused programming from Knowledge Keepers, speakers, scientists, and artists! 🗓️ MARCH 22 | 5:00 - 10:00 PM | INDIGENOUS SCIENCE NIGHT: FREQUENCIES 💲 Adults: $10 | Youth: $5 | Free for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) individuals. All ages are welcome. 🎟️ Link in bio to learn more and get tickets!
