2004 was the year I turned thirteen: full of ambition, still discovering myself, and yearning for the next chapter to begin. I still remember going to the theater that opening weekend in April with my mom, unaware of the signifcance the new Jennifer Garner rom-com would hold in my life. Twenty years later, '13 Going on 30' remains one of the most endearing films in its genre, and one that I've revisited countless times. From the heartfelt screenplay to the spirited performances, there is a warmth and joy to this feature that is rarely replicated. Screenwriters Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith were able to craft a story that is equally nostalgic, timely and timeless. The longing our main character feels is familiar to all of us, and as I've gone from first seeing this film in my teens to revisiting now in my thirties, my perspective has shifted yet the values have remained. The special ingredient that truly makes this movie work, though, is Garner. Her performance is beautifully nuanced, perfectly capturing the wonder, apprehension, curiosity, and exuberance of Jenna's almost whimsical journey and her internal tranformation of self. Joined on screen by Judy Greer, Mark Ruffalo, Andy Serkis and Marcia DeBonis, this unique coming-of-age modern fairy tale is rich with talent. I rewatched the film "13 Going On 30" this morning for its 20th anniversary. I've always really enjoyed this film! 13 Going On 30 is a sweet, heartfelt delight filled with lighthearted humor. The wonderful script Cathy Yuspa & Josh Goldsmith is about a 13-year-old girl who wishes to become 30 and it coming true. The film is a coming of age story about finding yourself, second chances, and love in the chaos of New York City. It's a whole lot of fun and can be quite witty. The film has sentimentality to it as well. The film stars Jennifer Garner in a fantastic performance filled with an infectious endearing charm and pure innocence. Mark Ruffalo also stars in a great performance as the likable love interest. Garner & Ruffalo have impeccable chemistry together. The film also has a really good supporting cast, including Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, Lynn Collins, Christa B. Allen, Sean Marquette, Kathy Baker, and Phil Reeves. The cinematography by Don Burgess is well done accompanied by a superb score by Theodore Shapiro and an awesome soundtrack. Its also nicely edited by Susan Littenburg. The film has some solid production design, costume design, art direction, and set decoration. 13 Going on 30 (2004) Movie Review: 13 Going on 30 is a cult classic romantic comedy following teen Jenna Rink (Christa B Allen) who is suddenly transported to her life as a 30 year old magazine editor (Jennifer Garner) after wishing to be older on her 13th birthday. The Gary Winick directed film is a slightly charming rom-com with enough legitimately good performances and periodically funny moments to make up for its predictable story that relies a bit too heavily on 1980s nostalgia and the fish out of water shenanigans to fully utilize its good message about your dreams not always being your reality. Despite a slightly corny opening where Jenna tries to get involved with the popular girls led by Lucy Wyman (Alxandra Kyle) while her next door neighbor Matty Flamhaff (Sean Marquette) tries to dissuade her from becoming vapid and popular, the film immediately goes into effective fish out of water comedy when the wishing dust Matty gives Jenna on her birthday transports her from 1987 to 2004 New York. Jennifer Garner is really what holds the film together as the earnest Jenna as her comedic timing while learning about her adult responsibilities and her current partnership with adult Lucy (Judy Greer) at Poise fashion magazine keeps the film's cliched story in check due to her funny reactions and teen personality. While having the main story be about Jenna and the Poise team trying to rebrand their magazine following rival magazine Sparkle taking their ideas is predictable, the better aspects of the story revolve around Jenna learning how her becoming friends with popular girls in the past led her to becoming a dishonest and backstabbing person in the present. The film provides subtle hints at how her current personality has alienated herself from her her family and caused her co-workers to be frightened of her and these elements provide better depth than the sitcom type humor surrounding Jenna trying to help Poise boss Richard (Andy Serkis) save a company party by dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller in a charming scene. Another aspect of the film that works is Jenna reconnecting with an older Matty (Mark Ruffalo) who works as a photographer (Rating in Comments)

Another recent Blu-ray pickup: HALLOWEEN and HALLOWEEN KILLS double pack. It’s shocking that I still don’t own John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN on physical media but I’m happy to finally now have some Michael Myers in my collection. Note that I bought the double pack and not the David Gordon Green trilogy boxset—that was very much intentional. 2018’s HALLOWEEN elicited a fairly lukewarm response from me when I first saw it but it’s definitely grown on me over time. HALLOWEEN KILLS on the other hand was a big hit for me immediately after it came out. A Vila - 2004, 1h48m Estranhamente cativante. O filme se passa em 1890, após um grupo de pessoas fundar uma vila no interior de uma floresta buscando uma vida tranquila, longe do perigo das cidades; apenas não esperavam que a floresta em questão fosse a casa de estranhas criaturas. Assim como Sinais, esse também passa uma sensação pré-2010 muito boa.É muito interessante ver atores como Jesse Eisenberg antes de serem famosos, tendo apenas umas 3 linhas durante o filme todo, assim como outros atores ainda no começo de suas carreiras e outros já com muita experiência. O mistério do filme, tanto sobre a vila quanto sobre as criaturas da floresta é bem interessante, o design delas é horrível (de uma maneira boa!) e eu adoraria ter visto mais delas no filme. Eu comentei em Sinais que aquele era um dos poucos filmes do M. Night que não tinha uma reviravolta inesperada e para contrastar bem com ele, esse aqui tem algumas reviravoltas e nem todas são tão boas quanto poderiam ser.
