The best time I’ve ever had with an angle grinder ☺️ . Okay I’ll be honest, this is the only time I’ve had with an angle grinder but the best is still the most perfect way to describe today. To while away the time whilst I’m job hunting, I have started to volunteer at the Kent Battle of Britain museum and today was my first day and I LOVED it. . First up, after donning the most over-sized pair of overalls you have ever seen, we stripped the paint off an Queen Mary Tasker Aircraft Trailer which meant I got to play with an angle grinder and electric wire brush, I’m telling you now there isn’t much more satisfying than seeing the polished metal come through. Sadly we didn’t get to finish this as we were rained off after lunch but the afternoon was by no way a disappointment as we spent it in one of the hangers rearranging a replica Messerschmitt Bf 109E, a Grunau Baby Glider and some CC41 furniture which you can imagine was heaven for a WW2 geek like me 😀 . So as you might have guessed, I very much enjoyed volunteering and getting involved and I will be back next week to see what other jobs need doing, I just need to make sure I get a slighter smaller set of Vinted overalls before any more photos are taken 😀 . It's been a joy to follow the progress of The Kent Battle of Britain Museum's Junkers Ju 52/3m / CASA 352L project this year. The museum obtained the aircraft from the RAF Museum Midlands in November 2022 and in in just 4 months the "Ju 52" was disassembled, transported, completely paint stripped, repainted, reassembled and repositioned for display at the Kent Battle of Britain Museum. There’s no better way to celebrate the start of my birthday week than a trip to a museum 😀 . On Sunday, I went down to Kent Battle of Britain, a privately run museum housed in the original buildings at the BOB airfield in Hawkinge and had an absolutely amazing day. . The collection is the largest amount of Battle of Britain items anywhere in the world and it is run by mainly volunteers who, as you can well imagine, are incredibly knowledgeable about the site. . Outside there are several original aircraft and each building is filled with a jaw dropping around of items including the original operations room which is filled with 1000’s of items from crash sites all around the world and the armoury which shows off the original uniforms, paraphernalia and weapons used throughout those few shorts months in 1940. . One thing to note, no mobile phones or recording equipment is allowed on site, which at first feels a little off but it’s actually a blessing. You have no interruptions as you wandering around the collection and you get right into the displays without any distractions, there is still chance to take some photos as once you’ve been around the site, you can collect your phone and a volunteer with accompany you to take the snaps you’d like which is great as they know all the best spots and you can get really up close and personal with the exhibits. . There is a cafe on site and an excellent bookshop with secondhand and new books to chose from as you exit. It’s a really great museum and I would definitely recommend coming, it’s also just down the road from the Battle of Britain Memorial on the cliffs so you can combine the two for an excellent day out ☺️ . I’d love to know if you’ve been here before and what you thought. Mission accomplished! I have been following the Junkers Ju52 project at The Kent Battle of Britain Museum since the aircraft first arrived in November last year. I last caught up with the project in March so was delighted to return this weekend and see the aircraft now completely repainted, reassembled, and repositioned in her new location - and doesn't she look superb! The missing cowling panel is due to the Staffel badge currently being applied. Soon, I will be sharing an in-depth article on www.warbirdlovers.com covering the Ju52 project and museum. --- This is a Spanish license built version of the Ju52 known as a CASA 352L that was built in 1954, and served with the Spanish Air Force until 1972. From 1977-2022 she was at the RAF Museum Cosford. ---- The markings represent a fictitious scheme of a 6./KGrzbV 1 Ju52 that would likely have been used in Operation Sealion, the invasion of Great Britain, had Germany won the Battle of Britain. Her interior will be used as an educational space and she will initially remain displayed outside, but the museum has been allocated additional land adjacent to the current site where a new hangar will be built in the future. However, to protect the aircraft a high spec automotive self-etching paint has been used for the repaint, as well as the preservative anti-corrosion ACF-50 coatings inside and out. Day 137/138 - after seeing the White Cliffs up close, we visited the Kent Battle of Britain Museum, at @eds_taxi_dover recommendation. @billstrahan loves all things WWII aviation related, and this museum did not disappoint! They had so much: a ton of rolls Royce v12/Merlin engines, as well as a variety of Hurricanes, Spitfires, and numerous German airplanes. You could really spend days going through all the detail here. Something a little different today with the "Spirit of The Few" Memorial at the The Kent Battle of Britain Museum, which is located on the site of the former RAF Hawkinge. Unveiled in July, it depicts seven pilots from RAF 32 Squadron who were photographed at RAF Hawkinge on 29th July 1940. The memorial is an exact recreation of the photograph and is positioned just a few hundred yards from the original location. --- It now serves as a permanent memorial to "The Few", the name famously given to the Battle of Britain fighter pilots in a Winston Churchill speech. The seven life-size bronze sculptures were made by art studio SPACER, and the detail is just stunning. --- Listed alphabetically, the pilots in the memorial are: Flight Lieutenant Pete Brothers Flying Officer Alan Eckford Flight Lieutenant Peter Gardner Pilot Officer Keith Gillman Flying Officer Douglas Grice Flight Lieutenant John Proctor Flying Officer Rupert Smythe --- With the unveiling of "Spirit of the Few" in July and the acquisition of the Junkers Ju52 (CASA 352L) in November, it has been quite the year for the museum! The museum features the world's largest collection of artifacts from Battle of Britain aircraft, as well as UK's most complete collection of original 1940s uniforms, equipment, and insignia from both sides. On Saturday 19th November I was invited to the The Kent Battle of Britain Museum to see the arrival of the CASA 352L / Junkers Ju52/3M from the RAF Museum, Cosford. --- All parts are on site and over the winter she will be paint stripped to bare metal, any repairs made to the skin, coated with preservative ACF 50, primed and repainted, repositioned in the museum grounds, and fully reassembled. Once complete she will be located near the museum's Heinkel He111, it will be fantastic to see these two iconic Luftwaffe types together, and she is the only representative of a Ju52 in the UK. --- She will be repainted into a fictitious scheme of a 6./KGrzbV 1 Ju52 that would likely have been used in Operation Sealion. She will be displayed outside for now, but the museum has been allocated additional land adjacent to the current site where a new hangar will be built in the future. However, to protect the aircraft a high spec automotive self-etching paint will be used for the repaint, as well as the preservative coatings. Having seen how well this has worked on the museum's Heinkel, and how the paint has not changed in two years, the aircraft has a bright future where she will be cared for and appreciated for years to come. It was great to visit ‘The Spirit of the Few’ monument today at the Kent Battle of Britain Museum in Hawkinge. A fantastic monument of 7 airmen from No.32 Squadron relaxing on the grass between sorties on 29 July 1940. The original iconic photo was taken just a few metres away from where these life-size bronze statues now sit. Jacob was lucky enough to sit with them. He likes to chat to Dave and the volunteers and I always learn something new from Jacob talking me through all the amazing things inside the museum. Jacob ran outside (before I even heard it) to see a spitfire fly above us. What’s on near Pete’s Field this week? Folkestone Airshow on Sunday and Hythe Venetian Fete on Wednesday! Fingers crossed 🤞 for the weather! Pete’s Field is about five miles from both. It’s a particularly great place to stay for aircraft enthusiasts as we are a mile away from the old Hawkinge airfield (now Kent Battle of Britain Museum) - and our local pub, the legendary Cat and Custard Pot, is where the pilots used to drink. Spitfires fly over regularly and we are often treated to a sneak preview of aircraft flying over on their way to the airshow! Theres been some great work done on the spitfire As you will see in the pictures lots has been done all the masking up & back masking to do her camouflage which is now all completed. The cockpit area is all painted led lights fitted & working FLT/LT BRENDAN FINUCANE ( spitfire paddy) now has his new office in the cockpit also cockpit canopy fitted The the hole plane is now sprayed olive green , dark earth the underside colour which was sprayed with sky colour. As you will see in the pictures lots has been done,the air intake cowling has been fibreglassed fitted filled & shaped same with the wheel flaps. The the hole plane was sprayed with high build primer flated off masked up for the underside colour which was then sprayed with SKY colour. Also the wheels have been primered & top coated with silver, the radiator cowling & the oil cooler cowling have had the inside piece painted satin black Next bit to be done is tiger seal the wheel wells then mask up ready for the silver spray,then the landing gear can be refitted for the last time. (SPITFIRE PADDY) BRENDAN FINUCANE BUILD UPDATE The easter hoilday weekend , so have made some great progress with the build as can be seen in the pictures. The weather has been great so far, Friday/Saturday the landing gear is fitted the underside of the wing is done now all the wood working side of things 😀. She has now been turned over that was fun had the wife helping me to turn her over, ive now made up where the top side of the wing meets the fuselage.Just got the tips to do next then sand to get that iconic shape !!!. Next piece after this will be finish the tail plane off then it will be getting down to the fibreglassing, this is where i need your help!! The funds are running low for the build now i need to raise £400 pound to finsh the project which is for the fibreglass & resin & her decals. The Kent Battle of Britain Museum CASA 2.111.B, believed to have been built in the early 1940's as a Heinkel He 111H-16 & later converted. Gardner, then aged 22, destroyed 4 enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain - adding to 4 claimed during the Battle of France.
