Sgòr Gaoith in the Cairngorms. Bee @bumblebambi and I went up there last weekend so that Bee could do some more navigation practice. It was a much slower ascent than I’m used to with Bee, as she stopped every few minutes to point out Devil’s matchsticks or trumpet lichen or blaeberry plants or to relocate us on the map. After we’d reached the summit of Sgòr Gaoith we wandered about in a bog, counting steps, walking on a bearing and setting the stop watch. Which meant that we ended up on the top of Carn Ban Mor in the most incredible light, and Sgòr Gaoith looked so good I could have eaten it! Then it was a wander back down the path, getting to the van just before sunset and then a quick dash to Aviemore for chips and cheese and pakoras (the chippy was closed). Some waterfalls for Waterfall Wednesday! 💙 Sometimes you have to escape the 9-5 and make time for the things you love, I have a thing for waterfalls just now so an impromptu bucket list adventure to tick off Allt na Crìche near Fort Augustus this was a fair lung buster from the carpark with different images compared to social media or maybe I wasn’t brave enough to get closer for those insta pics, still an amazing hike with the peaking views at the top across Loch Ness and Fort Augustus. Making the most of the destination I decided to try and find the secret Lady of Loch Ness, Lady Falls or locally known as the secret waterfall. I had tried to get this previously and ended up at a different waterfall. Looking west across the remote Knoydart peninsula some years ago from Sgurr na Ciche at dawn. Knoydart famously had no road access to the rest of Scotland, often resulting in its being claimed to be the most remote part of the country. There is a small village on the south side, accessible by boat, but mostly the area is a quiet and wild collection of mountains and glens.

April appropriately finished with a couple of days that can, at best, only be described as dreich! To be fair yesterday started out bright & the tourist shot of Blackrock Cottage had to be taken 🤣 this was en route to the Northeast Ridge of Stob a’ Ghlais Choire, one of my few remaining Munro Tops. My years of exploring blanket bogs came in very useful for getting there including negotiating various areas of pools created as part of peatland restoration (not everyone’s cup of tea but I found it interesting 🤣) but the route itself was superb. Grade 1 all the way on grippy igneous rock, very deserving of the stars it had in the guidebook. The snow started falling as soon as I reached the top of the scramble & this soon became rain. I visited Creise & Meall a’ Bhuiridh (via Clach Leathad just to be sure!) & by the time I was at the ski centre it was as wet as it can be without being a waterfall. A long schlep over the WHW to Kinlochleven followed, drying out then to the pub. I had grand plans for today but woke to a forecast that had gone downhill quite dramatically. Up on the hill this was very accurate & I took a good soaking visiting the eastern outliers of the Mamores, Sgùrr Eilde Mòr & Binnein Beag. The stonemasons who had built their home had left only the previous day. The occupancy was to last all of ten years. Ben Avon, beinn a bhurid and their 7 Munro tops. 32 miles - 2000m ascent A puncture for Andy 3 miles in meant he had to repair the puncture and leave it to dry so off we trotted on foot. A quick jaunt to the secret howf then it was up over the first 2 Munro tops of Avon. The 2 out the back of Avons torr are a 8km detour both ways so it was really good to get these done as it was giving me a headache thinking about it😂😅 down to the sneck after Avon then over to the first Munro top of beinn a bhurid before another long detour out to the outlying Munro top, however a pleasant surprise to have found a plane wreckage and plaque that I’d never known was there. All that was left now was the return back and up to the summit of beinn a bhuird then the walk out to the south top to head down and back to the bikes. Got back to the van at 10:35 and had 25 mins to get to ballater for food with a 19minute drive to get there…. Got there and the cash machine was broke, pulled up outside a pub and asked if they knew where there was another and they said nope just that one. Then some legend of a woman hands me £40 to get our food and we meet her at the Chinese to transfer the money back to her. Absolute life saver and there is some good people still left in the world🥰 thankfully Andy’s leg held out ok after last week hobbling off the hill. I wonder would you like to pop down memory lane with me. 🤣. This, will be our 10th year open at Blas. I think the first day was, 14th April 2014. The aim had been to choose a slower pace of life, to spend the morning baking scones and Victoria sponges, filled with home made Raspberry jam, the, radio on quietly in the background. Then spend the afternoons, gently weaving between tables, at a leisurely pace... Smiling calmly . A cake stand, in one hand, a pot of freshly brewed loose leaf tea in the other hand, a nice crisp white tea towel draped loosely on the arm. Polite chatter heard throughout the room. So, I hear you ask, what ever happened to that wee rose tinted dream😂 So, so much more....How much time do you have... Endless days in the tiny, roasting kitchen, sweating pouring down my luminously red face, order after order, always running out of soup or a mad dash making scones at 4pm when all the baking had run out.... (I have a wonderful chef now, and an equally wonderful Super-duper extractor fan). The intention of serving fish and chips only on a, Saturday evening was quickly shattered. As were my nerves, as I so often had to rush home, at break neck speeds to peel yet another bag of potatoes, and chip them (we have space to do all this in house now). We added 2 bedrooms, a drinks licence, plus draught beer in the Summer. An area outside for takeaway customers to sit in, and opened up the, wall to reveal the gorgeous original stone, and lintel (huge and still in one piece), oh my word, that was THE most exciting day. Then added a stove. So there we are, a snap shot of 10 years. We hope to do more celebrations later, as the Summer progresses. I hope you will be able to come join us 🌞😁.

MEALL GARBH & LAWERS RANGE ☑️. Finally got back to finish off the Lawers range! We were so close to this one back in November when we climbed Meall Greig but didn’t want to loose day light, so decided to cut back down and missed this at the time. Today the weather was decent for most of the walk, but the weather closed in within 30 seconds of reaching the summit. It was probably the coldest summit to date. We took our hands out to take a picture and instantly they were in agony with the cold, so it was a fairly quick turnaround. The first time I completed the Fisherfield round, following the usual route from Shenavall bothy, the hours at altitude elapsed in a smothering murk. I can’t quite decide in retrospect whether it was a consequence of my vision being clouded by the, well cloud, or my recalcitrant brain simply choosing not to retain the detail, but when I summited three of the peaks for the second time in full visibility, I could recall nothing familiar about the terrain. Despite a hankering to have another go at the classic circuit, the urge to explore routes less travelled is now more compelling. And so it was that I found myself with @the_victorian_mountaineer and @alternative_ascents under an inky sky on the long approach along the Cape Wrath Trail to base camp at Lochan Fhada - sandwiched between Slioch and the southern Fisherfields, a supreme wilderness. After a brutally cold night under canvas, we continued on the Cape Wrath Trail, peeling off at Loch an Nid and climbing the broad quartzite slabs that characterise the eastern face of Sgùrr Bàn. From the summit, a tricky boulder field had to be negotiated before we could pick up the walkers’ path, a steep descent on loose ground to the col with Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair mirrored in the strenuous ascent to its apex.
