He went up to him, gently touched his back, and kissed his back. For reference, I’ve never seen Lennon kiss his brother and he did it so gingerly, I know he meant it as comfort. We do not force Lennon into situations.. or his brother for that matter (except for school 🫠). If our kids don’t wanna be around you, they won’t. If they don’t wanna hug you, I won’t let them. 🌟Things are going great for Lennon. There are still many, many challenges and not all days are our best days, but overall, Lennon is vibing and thriving. Lennon’s program that he’s been in for only 3 months has already helped and taught him so much — and me! In this short span, he is now working on potty training (yes, this is miserable, but we believe he can do it), working with PECS, and learning cooperative play. Lennon has started some amazing things. He’s started communicating with PECS! Soooo… What’s PECS? ✨Picture Exchange Communication System✨ So using physical cards, blocks, or pictures to convey what he wants. We started with the basics where all attempts at communication was based from one PECS piece. It could mean 👉🏻 help, break, food, thirsty, play, hugs, bathroom… or anything! So what have we moved on to now? We are teaching him individual pictures and pairing them to objects. The professionals he works with agree that he knows the difference between a few of them and uses them meaningfully. He knows the following pictures and what they are: 🫧 bubbles 🧩 puzzle 🧸 toy 🫂 hugs He’s the coolest and never stops impressing me. We made the best choice possible for him when we took him out of his public program and fought for him to be in a private 1:1 program. He is THRIVING and so happy. He gets all excited waiting for his person to come get him. He immediately grabs her hand and leads her back. 💜 he has an amazing team and we’re so grateful. Let them guide you. Our non-verbal buddies (and even verbal pals) might not know how to tell you what they need. Just watch and they’ll show you. Self-regulation can be a self-taught skill. Lennon used to act out when his was dysregulated and sometimes, of course he still does. However, now- more times than not, he knows what he needs. Sometimes.. that’s just time alone in his room with the door closed, free to make his lines without distractions. It’s his little peace zone. We made his room as happy for him as possible so he could use it as a safe zone and he definitely does. So grateful. So blessed. Haircuts are hard. I never knew just how hard until Lennon entered our world. Bright lights, cape rubbing on your neck, itchy hair, someone moving you around, tilting your head, loud noises, buzzing from the clippers… it’s a sensory explosion. Haircuts are hard for Lennon. He’s a sensory seeker and it’s still just too much. This time was one of the hardest. He thrashed so hard that he passed out as soon as we got to the car. He stayed laying down, awake, for an entire hour when we got home.. just decompressing and recuperating. It was sad and I don’t want to have to do that again. So we may buy clippers and learn to do it ourself! His hair grows so fast and it’s so hot in our city during the Summer. So I think it’s probably the right call for me and dad to do it.. where we can take as much time as he needs without all the extra sensory input. Don’t judge the kid or the parent on screen time, neurodivergent or not. We all regulate ourselves differently. To be honest, Lennon gets a lot of screen time. Are we trying to cut back a bit? Yes. Are we micromanaging it? Absolutely not. His iPad is where he goofs off after a long, overstimulating day at school. Moana and Elsa are his best friends and Pascal is his cousin. He learned his colors, numbers, shapes, and letters from Little Baby Bum and we didn’t even know it until he started school. Screen time is not a waste of time. Y’all… LENNON IS FOUR!💗✨ Birthdays aren’t cut and dry when it comes to a kiddo with autism. As always, we adjust and adapt. It’s not a normal birthday party. We can’t ask Lennon what he wants to do, so we decide based on what we know. We can’t ask what he feels like for dinner, so we pick his safe foods. We can’t ask if he wants to invite friends, because I don’t even know who he truly gets along with and who he just tolerates. So it was just us and family. No norms were pushed and he could just be and do whatever he felt like. We sang to him and he wore his cute birthday hat. 🥹 How we celebrated: He went to school, because he loves school and his teachers so much. They made him a crown and gave him a birthday sticker for his shirt! He even got a picture with his bestie teacher. Then we got chicken nuggies, went to FlipnOut for some jumping fun, came back home for snacks and cookies with family, and ended the night with trying out his new swing set. 🥹🥳 it was a beautiful day. Let’s talk… ✨SLEEP✨ on the spectrum. Beauty rest is not simply beauty rest for our friends on the autism spectrum. It can be far left- very hard time sleeping.. or far right- very dependent on sleeping. For people with autism, sleeping difficulties are very common. Even Lennon sometimes will just randomly have a wild sleep schedule, unprompted, because he can’t fall asleep at a good time. There’s been many days we’ve had to keep him home from school due to him not sleeping. Sleeping is a huge sensory experience and with many people who are on the spectrum having sensory difficulties, it’s easy to see how falling asleep isn’t always an easy task. Some have help with weighted blankets.🖤 Now there’s the other side- sleep dependent. Normally they’ll sleep more than typical people do because they use sleep as a way to regulate themselves. Feeling out of control? Sleep. Feeling overstimulated? Sleep. Feeling another negative feeling? Sleep. They can use sleep as a way to help their body readjust and recalibrate for the remainder of the day. Lennon has issues sleeping on both sides of this topic. Sometimes he has a hard time sleeping, but also if he’s having a hard day, he’ll take a nap. 😴 I never knew how important sleep was for people on the spectrum… or how difficult it could be. Autism really makes being sick a million times harder. Lennon is non-communicative for the most part and we’re still unsure of how much he understands when we talk to him. So when he’s puking, we can’t teach him how to get it out of his mouth or even how to get it in a trashcan. Today he woke up puking and his vomit was so thick and chunky, I literally had to scoop it out of his mouth because he didn’t know how to spit it out. People don’t think of these things that us autism parents have to work harder for. Parenting is hard in general so every bit that’s a little more challenging can sometimes feel like the weight of the world. We also can’t explain to him that he needs medicine.. or why the doctor has to check his ears or push on his belly. Imagine a world where you have no source of communication with other. Nothing anyone says makes sense and you dont know how to express your needs and preferences. Absolutely powerless. I sympathize with him and can only imagine how he must feel.. along with many others in the world. Today Lennon communicated with me. It’s hard having a nonverbal child because it’s hard to tell if/when they’re trying to tell you something. Today he was adamant until I understood. He wanted to go outside. He lightly scratched my hand and then went to the door. He did the scratch to get my attention and brought it to the door. He did this 4 times total. Back to back. Nothing breaks my heart like when Lennon is sick or in pain. Since he doesn’t talk or communicate very functionally, he just feels the sickness and the pain. He can’t express how he’s feeling or explain his wants/ needs. Even on an average day, it can be very challenging to have a child who can’t yet communicate with you… But adding sickness to the recipe and it’s hell. I wish I could take it away. Plus, we cant explain to him why he needs to take medicine and it’s not like any kid will willingly take it without at least knowing why. So we have to sneak it into juice or use other ways to give him medicine when he needs it. It’s not nearly as effective, but whatever will help at all. Having a child with special needs can be a lonely place to live. I thought I’d never feel lonelier than when I had my first son, because suddenly, 80% of my friends were gone. They didn’t have children and suddenly, we were no longer alike. Now that I have a beautiful boy on the spectrum, I can see how it can be so much worse for parents of children with special needs. Many times, people with special needs are left out of plans, fun times, and consideration. For instance, I have no idea if a classmate will ever invite Lennon to a birthday party. Most, if not all, of them can talk and truly create relationships together whereas Lennon struggles with communicating at all. It’s harder to attend things when you’re unsure how your child will react in many situations.. but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to be included. Keep inviting us — but don’t be offended if we don’t come. Life comes with extra complications for us families with special needs embedded. Our kids deserve to be included. 🫶🏼 Be understanding. Our kids with special needs will probably not act the same way your neurotypical kids do. Be accepting and educate your babies to understand that people come in all forms. ❤️ Don’t think we’re bitter because you have a “normal” kid. There’s no bad blood here. I love my son exactly as he is. I don’t wish he was neurotypical and I don’t wish we had it easier. I’m not angry and I’m not salty. Tell me about your kids. Tell me about their successes! We’re told that “God” only gives kids like this to people like us. Let me be super clear: Do not. Say this. To special needs parents. Ever. Hyper vs. Hypo - sensitivity ⚡️ HyPERsensitivity is to sensory sensitive as hyPOsensitivity is to sensory seeking. While hyposensitivity isn’t 100% sensory seeking, there are a lot of similarities. The main difference is that it’s not always going to be the person seeking sensory input, but sometimes just having a lower response rate to the sensory input. Typically, people who are hyposensitive need MORE extreme sensory input because their receptors don’t feel it at the same level as others. Where a tight hug may make someone else uncomfortable with it’s constriction, it could make someone with hyposensitivity extremely relaxed. This is where they use an occupational therapy technique called ✨deep pressure therapy/stimulation✨- In this, the person performing the therapy will either personally apply the pressure or help them to move their muscles with pressure in order to get that input, also known as “heavy work.” An example of DPS (deep pressure stimulation) would be using your own hands to apply pressure in small sections of the body at the time. We’d normally take about 2 minutes giving “squeezes” to Lennon’s whole body. We started with his hands, moved to forearms, then upper arms, sides, thighs, calves, then feet. Places that relaxed him more, we spend more time with. We did this every hour. It helped to calm him and give him some of that sensory input that he desperately needs. An example of heavy work would be pushing and pulling activities, wearing ankle weights, jumping on a trampoline, or using a body roller. ✨ROUTINE ✨ Ever wonder why routine is something that many people with autism cling to and follow religiously? Lemme break it down. Many people with autism live in a state of anxiety. With being in such a fast paced world, sometimes it’s hard to keep up, to manage everything, and to not get overwhelmed. Sometimes even when we’re going through the motions, it’s still hard to stay on track. Routines offer a way to decrease the amount of anxiety by knowing what to expect and having control over your day. The same way that many people with autism have “safe foods.” They know what they’ll taste like, it’s consistent and doesn’t change. Change is hard, scary, and intimidating for all of us. For the world of autism, it can be even more so. Routines are a good structure to follow to maintain all the chaos in which days hold. Having visual aid is particularly helpful for kiddos! My sons class follows a visual routine board where they take off items that they finish as they finish them. They can see the expectations of the day, see them complete the tasks (having goal oriented thinking weaved in), and know what’s coming up next! Sometimes we could all use some help managing the chaos. Usually, taking him to appointments is so, SO stressful because he runs around like crazy, screams, climbs on stuff, etc. BUT this time? I sat down first, tapped the chair next to me and told him “wanna sit with mommy?” And he climbed up and sat with me. He was cooing and giggling. I couldn’t believe it. Is this the next chapter where I can stress less about taking Lennon out into the world? Will eating at restaurants be doable? Will doctor visits be manageable? One year ago (just over.. I meant to post this on 10/08, exactly 1 year, but life is hard LOL), Lennon was diagnosed with autism. 💙🧩 I can’t even begin to explain how much this last year has changed my family. If you would have told me when Lennon was born that he has autism and that life isn’t going to be what I originally expected, I would have panicked, cried, screamed, and broke down. I remember when I found out, I went through so many different emotions. Sadness that his life would not be easy. Anger because people told me repeatedly that he definitely didn’t have autism. Relief for finally having answers. Grief for the life I imagined. Determination to help him in every way I could. I walked about of the developmental specialist’s office, choked up, not wanting to cry in front of the doctor or receptionists. I felt the lump in my throat and the burning behind my eyes. I had suspicions for a long time and people always helped me shush them away, but I was right. I was right the whole time. I wasn’t even supposed to get into that appointment. I got lucky because Lennon’s speech therapist trusted me enough to offer me a spot to get Lennon evaluated, even though he wasn’t even on her at-risk chart. People wait for months to get those appointments. There was a cancellation and her supervisor approved me getting Lennon to be seen. She told me “I know you have suspicions, despite what our M-CHAT score says.” Here’s me telling you to always trust your mom-gut, because like I said, I was right. I usually am when it comes to my kids. I reached my car and put Lennon in his car seat, tears already falling. “You’re perfect exactly how you are and I wouldn’t change you for anything,” I told him after I kissed his forehead. I remember those words falling out of my mouth faster than I could even think about it. ✨We’re now a few months into the school year and here are some exciting, new things that are happening: 1. Lennon is no longer fighting us to sit on the potty 2. Lennon is LOVING his teachers and no longer hesitant when it’s time for school 3. Lennon started by walking by holding hands and now, will even walk without holding hands 4. He will sit and eat with much less struggle or resistance - he used to stand, jump, and run around during meal time 5. He’s learning to sort objects based on color and shape 6. He’s starting to engage in group activity - something he’s never, ever done 7. He’s using more eye contact 8. He has a SLEEP SCHEDULE. OH MY GOD THANK GOODNESS. It’s not ALWAYS perfect and still sometimes struggles with sleep, but for the most part, he’s in bed by 9 and up by 6:30 😇 9. Lennon is showing less aggression in general 10. He will willingly use utensils with help! He can’t hold them himself, but he will eat off of them and do hand over hand while eating. 11. Speaking of - he doesn’t fight hand over hand! WOOTWOOT! 12. He allows us to cut his nails without squirming, fighting, crying. Etc. 13. He is all around more independent He, our whole family, and his teachers are working SO HARD to help him and we’re seeing such big things. A HUGE challenge with a relatively small name: sensory overload. While people who are sensory sensitive are more prone to sensory overloading, anyone can experience this, even someone sensory seeking, like Lennon! Imagine you walk into a room with loud sounds, bright lights, your parents is trying to usher you through a crowd and you have no control. The light get brighter, blinding. The sound is causing physical pain and your parents hand feels like needles stabbing you. Your brain starts to overlap between sensory input and pain receptors, identifying one as the other and boom- meltdown. I, myself, have definitely experienced sensory overload and it’s frightening. I become almost inconsolable and debilitated. I can’t even imagine the stress it puts on a child.
