Yesterday I commuted to Wallingford which I haven't done for many years, it's an historic market town outside Oxford. I had the pleasure of presenting autism training for Operation Friendship again which is a care home supporting young adults on the autism spectrum. The topic was about meltdowns and how they happen a basic overview would be this - - Language processing challenges (aphasia/verbal agnosia/semantic pragmatic disorder and the ability to filter language) - Sensory perception & Sensory integration (agnosias for example which impacts visual perception/body perception although it's not limited to the above and the processing of various sensory modulations) - Alexithymia (delayed emotional recognition/body disconnect/emotional dysregulation) - Social Perception (social emotional agnosia and/or faceblindness which impacts on social connection) - Speech & Communication (full body and/oral apraxia that impact on expressive/verbal communication) - System of Sensing (When the person merges with people's energies/emotional states/ thought patterns - Mental Health & Personality types (co-ocurring mental conditions that impact on day to day life, personality types that temper individuals wants/needs/aspirations/attachment styles and social - emotional connections) Each piece has an individual experience and thus an internal and external reality which it takes time to understand It was a great experience speaking to the team. Breathing strategies are so very important to teach kids because it helps them calm down and self regulate their mood. Teaching is hard but play is easy that's why I love using these strategies. The kids find them fun and engaging and when they're finished the memories of anxiety and overwhelm are vastly reduced. Which is your go to with your kiddos? If it isn't on here why not let me know in the comments below. Have a great day. Meltdowns often continue due to miscommunication. A child hears what you’re saying differently to how you imagine it’s being heard. And this is part of the problem. You need to get into their mind and speak THEIR language. Imagine being able to calm your child within 5 mins…. This was the NEW reality for one couple who came to me last year… They were already taking part in another program and I’ll be honest- the advise they were being given was NOT going to work for a sensitive child. I don’t actually think the advise that was being taught was helpful for any child to be honest ( this is why it’s so important to know who you’re learning from) - but it was absolutely not helping their son. His daily 20 min meltdowns we’re continuing 4 months into that program. I knew that wasn’t working because in my experience- by week 12, my clients don’t have a child who still feels like that . I taught them what to say to their son IN the moment he was on the floor screaming and crying. Because it’s stressful enough hearing that , let alone not knowing how to handle it! Within 2 weeks, they came back to me and said that they’d used the words I recommended to them to say to their son, and he calmed within FIVE MINUTES! I imagine their evening was filled with chats about how that just happened and I imagine they felt proud of themselves. It could have been an evening filled with not speaking to one another out of sheer exhaustion or arguments about their son… but that evening wasn’t. That’s the thing with learning these skills- it doesn’t just impact a child… it impacts so many other areas… how you feel about yourself, how you feel around your partner… the energy you have, whether you actually want to get out of bed the next day or not. I’m going to share the advise I gave to this couple in a FREE webinar class on Wednesday 15 th May 730pm BST. Put it in your diary and I’ll get the sign up page up this week for you to register. ❤️ you don’t want to miss this! That advise was a game changer for them!

Raising confident kids is probably one of the best & most important things you can do as a parent🧡 👧🏾Our eldest in 7 and currently going through it emotionally. It could be many things: hormones, being highly sensitive, wanting independence, not knowing how to deal with her emotions, etc. ♾️While we are going through the zones of regulation, trying to see how we can help…We are also trying to boost her confidence. She is being down on herself and we are trying to get her out of this funk. 🤗I put this list together for myself to help with ideas on how we can boost that confidence. What a great way reminder us of the significant influence a parents' belief in their child hold 💛💫 See, from the very beginning, it's our unwavering belief, faith and support that lays the foundation for our child's confidence, resilience, and empowerment. 🏆 As parents, caregivers, and mentors, we have the extraordinary power to nurture dreams and inspire greatness. ✨ It's a journey of unconditional love, encouragement, and unwavering belief in our children's potential. 🌠 So, let's continue to believe in them! Remember that anxiety is catching and the more dysregulated your child is (and the more dysregulated they behave), the more likely you will catch their dysregulation. Before you tell them to calm down, try to calm yourself down. Before you remind them to breathe, practice your own breathing. There are three reasons to do this: . 1. You're modeling for them how to handle big feelings and big situations. Even if you think they aren't paying attention, their subconscious hypervigilant awareness is taking notes. . 2. Dysregulation is catching but so is calm. You are helping to shift the mood in the room and creating an invitation for them to join you in safety. . 3. It's difficult to make good decisions when we're in a reactive state, which is how we end up yelling at a kid who is already a mess and making things worse. . If you need help finding calm when your child is having an anxiety meltdown please reach out!

Autie not naughty This awesomely cute design is aimed at autistic children and young people (or anyone that likes it!) whose behaviour may be misunderstood as naughty. This powerful design aims to promote understanding of autistic children and their unseen struggles. It also serves as a reminder that what may appear as poor behaviour is actually a result of challenges that lead to meltdowns - such as sensory overwhelm.  Lets spread empathy, compassion and the importance of knowing the full story! https://ndmvshop.etsy.com #autism #autismgirls #autisticandproud #meltdowns #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #autie

We were invited to a birthday party this afternoon. I feel so fortunate to live in a community where our neighbors are friends, and include our family for celebrations and events. It was at a neighborhood park and I was looking forward to chatting with the moms who would be there. I remember a time with our oldest two where play dates satisfied my need to socialize with moms and my child's need to play with other kids. But parenting a child with special needs constantly means I need to manage my expectations carefully. We ended up leaving the birthday party early because our youngest continues to demonstrate a difficult time when what he wants isn't immediately available to him. He wanted to swing, but the swings were being used by other kids. His fixation on his preferred activities is starting to really shine as he gets older. When he was younger we could easily redirect him, but it's starting to be more challenging. And he's also getting bigger, so the tantrums are harder to manage. Driving home, I felt like we had failed. The voice in my head tried to convince me that I should have done something differently to prevent the meltdown. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this is part of our parenting a child with Autism. His big feelings and the challenges we have with communication are the ingredients for his meltdowns. Once at home, he found comfort in his toys and I found comfort by making a warm tea. Life feels good again. #parenting #parentingautism #meltdowns #birthday #failure #selfcompassionjourney

#rust #kindercoaching #auticoach #kinderen #coaching #paardencoaching #emotieregulatie #driftbuien #meltdowns #autisme #adhd #socialevaardigheden #faalangst #angst

Join me explore how we, as parents and carers, can help our children regulate emotions and behaviour during meltdowns. 💡 I've said it before and I'll say it again: meltdowns are not simply a way to get your attention... they run deeper. They're seeking connection, asking for help to address a problem they're not able to properly communicate, a way escape overwhelming situations, or due to sensory overload. Starting Monday, 29th April, join us for a 5-day virtual workshop designed for parents and carers of neurodiverse children. We'll learn to identify triggers, how to communicate effectively, navigate feelings of guilt and shame (don't worry, I get it, and it's okay!), and how to best to be their advocate. In doing so, we nurture them into living empowered and fulfilled lives! 🌟 🤝 So here's to empowering ourselves, advocating for our children, and building a supportive community together. Comment "ME" or head to the link in my profile to get access.

Meltdowns are tough… for parents.. and for kids. It is hard for children to be told they can’t have or do something they really want. Meltdowns are a natural and developmentally appropriate. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand to make meltdowns stop. However, parents can build a child’s resilience when they are upset. 1. Set expectations beforehand. For example, before going to the grocery store, talk with your child about what they can and cannot buy. Try offering one item they CAN have (and eat ) while you shop. 2. When saying no, pair it with 2 possible choices. For example, “sorry we are not getting fruity pebbles, you can choose cheerios or Chex.” 3. Validate your child’s feelings. They will likely be upset. That is ok- validate and empathize. 4. Avoid the power struggle and hold your boundary. As much as we want the screaming in the middle of the grocery store to stop, try to hold your boundary. By giving in and allowing the child the fruity pebbles sends a message to the child that next time they scream, they will get what they want. #meltdowns #tantrums #parentcoaching #parenting

Sensory grounding techniques can be incredibly beneficial for individuals on the autism spectrum, as well as for anyone looking to manage anxiety or overwhelm. By engaging with the senses, individuals can redirect their focus away from intrusive thoughts or emotions and bring their attention to the present moment, which can be very calming. For children on the spectrum, teaching sensory self-regulation techniques can be particularly valuable. This not only helps them manage their emotions in the moment but also equips them with lifelong skills for navigating various situations. Sensory activities such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, or tactile stimulation can provide a means for children to regulate their emotions and find a sense of calm amidst overwhelming situations. Additionally, creating a sensory-friendly environment can further support children with sensory sensitivities. This may involve providing sensory tools like fidget toys, weighted blankets, or noise-canceling headphones, as well as designing spaces with soothing lighting and textures. Overall, fostering an understanding of how to utilize their senses for self-regulation empowers children on the spectrum to navigate the world with greater ease and confidence. @asdtools_app #autism #asd #aspie #calming #meltdown #meltdowns #sensoryissues #senparent #autistic #autismeducation #selfregulation #selfreg #aspergers #autistickids #autismawareness #autismacceptance #inclusion #actuallyautistic #autismparenting #autismparent #autismdad #autismmom #autismmum #autistictoddler #autismmonth

This is huge. Are you focusing on allowing your child to feel thier emotions all the way through to completion? Whatever form that may take - are you allowing and accepting? Or Are you focusing on fixing them, the feelings and ultimately trying to get those feelings to go away? Our children have this built-in system that allows them to offload big feelings. They're experts at releasing and then moving on with ease and flow. Ultimately it is us as the parents that struggle with these big releases and big emotions. It's hard for us to not want to stop the big feelings or "fix" our children. When we consistently try to stop this process from happening or try to "fix it" we ultimately interfere with our child's innate ability to release and flow. We create drama around the event, which can cause a great deal of anxiety, shame and even fear for our children around big meltdowns or tantrums. Not only that but focusing on making these big feelings go away ultimately makes our children stuff and ignore those feelings vs. feeling it all the way through to completion. Feeling it to heal it. When we regularly interrupt this process behavioral issues can arise. When we don't allow these feelings to be released they start to come out more frequently in spirts here and there over trival stuff. Children NEED these big releases. When we allow big emotional releases we create ✨CONNECTION✨ in our relationship with our children. Connection means more ease and flow for everyone. More cooperation from our children. More clarity and love + Less drama and stress. ✨ Wanting to create more ease and flow in your relationship with your children? Wondering how you can truly hold space for big feelings? I wanted to share a post on this topic to help spread awareness of meltdowns but also normalise that these things can and do happen in meltdowns. Even though meltdown differ from person to person and one meltdown can be different from another time they can be very distressing. It important if you are supporting an autistic person to allow them to have a meltdown and be supportive and understanding. Provide a safe space and help redirect behaviour that may be harmful. It can be hard in a meltdown to control our behaviour we may need some help/ reminders or we may need to be alone it really depends on the individual and their needs. If you relate to what I put on this post and you also experience these know that your not alone and your feelings and experiences are valid ❤️❤️ Disclaimer: This is based on individual experiences and may differ from person to person 🙂 #autistic #autisticadults #meltdowns #stimming #sensoryoverload #sensoryinput #overstimulation #sensoryprocessing #overwhelm #autisticburnout #autisticcommunity #unmasking

Posted @withregram • @theexpertally Autistic people often feel that they cannot get done as much as NTs get done. And they judge themselves for it. We need to understand two things: . 1) Autistic people often work harder internally than an NT person would to accomplish something. . When there are no accommodations for the environment or the process to work for an autistic person, their energy is often wasted on coping. . Because accommodations are never perfect even when available, because the neurology is different, and because some situations (such as group conversations or transitions) are very energy-consuming, autistic people work extra hard every day even under the best circumstances. . 2) Because of the above, autistic people need extra time during the day and they need recovery time. . Accommodating for the different neurology should come without any judgement. It is the only way to maintain mental health. There are many different accommodations that help. Extra time is one of the essential ones. . #Meltdowns #adhd #SPD #autism #spectrum #ASD #anxiety #mentalhealth #floortime #sped #teachersofinstagram #parenting #SPD #autismmom #autismdad #autismparent #autismparents #ADHDbrain #ABA #slppeeps #bcbaaba #slp2be #behavior #ashaigers #anxietyrelief #anxietysupport #anxietysupports #SLP #anxietyproblems #selectivemutism #anxietyhelp

i love jokes. dad jokes, dark jokes, silly jokes, kids jokes. i fancy memes. linguistic memes, silly memes, dark ones. i enjoy watching videos. educational videos, silent comedy videos, pronunciation videos. i used love sharing them to somebody. slowly they started laughing AT me instead of WITH me. gradually they made fun of me instead of having fun w me. steadily they teased me instead of ceasing other bullying me. i still love jokes, memes, and videos; but i don’t share any of them. i learned my lessons way tooo looooong ago. Gonna open up a little here as I know there’s a great community of women with #autism on Instagram and maybe I can get a little advice as my journey continues. I’ve had this book a week now and haven’t felt compelled to read it until today. Today I had my first autistic meltdown being fully aware that that’s what was happening. At first I thought it was a panic attack, and I’ve always thought they were panic attacks, but treating it as a meltdown actually helped me calm down a lot quicker. My self diagnosis journey so far has been quite positive, it’s been funny hearing my family and friends talk about my weird quirks as a kid, unlocking memories, and going on a bit of a journey of self discovery. But today was the first time it felt like a disability, it was dark and I felt vulnerable, exposed and embarrassed. But thanks to the help of my managers at work (who are just amazing!) and utilising some of what I’ve learned in the handful of videos I’ve watched I was able to ride it out, where usually I’d have called it quits for the day and shut down. So I’m proud of that! I’m learning that being an adult woman with autism and admitting you have meltdowns is a bit taboo, there’s little awareness of it, and yeah it’s embarrassing to admit as well! I think I just felt compelled to be honest about what happened to me today, so that other women don’t need to feel ashamed either. What a dayyyy 😂😂 #autisticwomen #womenwithautism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #meltdowns #asd

What does fight or flight feel like in your body? For some people, it may feel like a racing heart; short, shallow breathing; tense muscles; hyperfocus; flushed skin… the list is slightly different for everyone. To move out of fight or flight so that you can be calm and connected to your child, you need to signal to your body that you’re safe. This signal to your body is called a downshift. Follow us here for downshift strategies you can use for many different parenting scenarios

I put my stress relief ear seeds on a few hours ago. They feel like they’re sticking well and I’m feeling good. The reason it works so well is because when we stimulate certain points on the ear we are stimulating nerve branches that connect directly to your brain triggering a therapeutic response. The main nerve that travels through the ear responsible for the triggering response is the vagus nerve, which is known as the wandering nerve because it connects to so many places in the body! https://www.earseeds.com/shop-thrive/ref/1188 #babies #earseedsforanxiety #toddlers #earseeds #complementarytherapy #toddler #weightmanagement #nervoussystemregulation #noninvasive #crystalearseeds #stress #dysregulation #cravings #stressrelief #crystals #earseedtherapy #backpain #colicbaby #healingjourney #stressreliever #meltdowns #parentingtoolbox #holistic #appetitecontrol #cute #backpainrelief #feelinggood #wellness #selfcarefirst #earaccessories

How we go from 😡 to 😌 Emotional regulation can be CHALLENGING with a toddler - let alone throwing another language or two into the mix. Our calm corner space includes books on emotions and self-esteem in both English and Spanish and we work on naming the emotions in both languages as well. As an English-only speaker it can be tricky to navigate meltdowns and tantrums while also trying to intentionally utilize both languages. Thankfully, I don’t *really* have to. The “Sentimientos/Feelings” book is a great visual AND it has a pronunciation guide (for monolinguals like me). I highly recommend this book, or a similar book in your target language if available, for handling emotions in different languages.

What does overtiredness look like? 😠 frustration over everything - a lack of patience with a task 😠 being fickle and changing their minds 😢 lots of crying and feeling upset 😡 anger and lashing out 📺 wanting screen time or to be held a lot 🍫 a lack of appetite regulation - wanting snacks and preferably yummy ones! And trouble at mealtimes. Yes, these behaviours are normal in all children even if they've slept well because their brains aren't fully developed and life can be frustrating, but if your child isn't getting enough sleep, this can also lead to these behaviours becoming more prevalent. So, how much sleep should children be having and how do you know if it's enough? 🕐 1-3 years olds on average need 11-13 hours of sleep at night plus 45mins - 3 hours daytime naps (decreasing with age to around 45 mins from age 2) 🕐 3 -6 year olds needs 11-12 hours of quality night time sleep (most won't nap) 🕐 7 - 12 year olds need 10-12 hours 🕐 12 - 18 year olds need 9-11 hours of sleep 👉 The averages do vary wildly so it's also best to look at your child and how they cope with their current amount of sleep and whether there are any factors which prevent them from sleeping their full amount. These can be screen time and content close to bed which they choose over sleep, or which stimulate their brains to not feel as tired. 👉 If your child is struggling as the day goes on and they become more grouchy and display the above symptoms of overtiredness, it's likely they need a bit more sleep to get through the day. Likewise, if your child is on the lower end of average but they make it through fine to bedtime and are mostly well-regulated (you know your child), they're likely sleeping the right amount for them. #Overtiredness #ChildBehavior #ParentingChallenges #Tantrums #Meltdowns #SleepNeeds #ChildSleep #SleepPatterns #ParentingAdvice #SleepAwareness #HealthySleep #ChildDevelopment #SleepScience #ParentingTips #SleepHygiene #SleepSupport #FamilyWellness #SleepQuality #SleepConsultation #BedtimeRoutine #ParentingStruggles #SleepDeprivation #ParentingCommunity #SleepTips #ParentingSupport #ChildWellness #ToddlerLife #FamilyLife

Meltdowns are similar to the fight response. When an autistic person is having a meltdown they often have increased levels of anxiety and distress.
