Are you a fan of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder? My son is a huge fan so we made a stop at her home in Mansfield, MO. We had a wonderful day visiting her two homes and the museum. The museum is full of history, timelines and artifacts. I loved that they had a section which each book was featured. We also visited the public library (named after her) and read more books about her life.

Does this time of year remind you of The Little House Series with their big holiday celebrations with family & of packing their homes with preserved foods for the winter (think Farmer Boy)? It sure does for me. On Sunday I spent 7 hours in the kitchen putting up (canning) a year’s supply of applesauce for our family. Today I am doing all of the baking for Thanksgiving - shoefly cake for my dad’s hunting camp, zucchini bread and pumpkin and apple pies. I feel like Ma Ingalls in the kitchen & I have to admit, I kind of love it. Ok I really love it. I also feel a connection to my ancestors as well - knowing the only option for them was to cook and bake from scratch. It feels symbolic, like a way to honor their memory. Hello Spring! Yesterday was the March Equinox, meaning it is officially spring! Considering it will bounce between below freezing and high seventies this week, it's fair to say spring may refuse to cooperate and continue impersonating both winter and summer instead. In honor of spring, I've got a lovely flatlay of my Laura Ingalls Wilder books. I dug them out of storage when I visited my home recently, completely forgetting I had them. They're actually from the 1971 printing, and were handed down to me in elementary school. While winter does come (and come hard) to the Ingalls family, these books remind me of being outdoors in the spring. (Because my dad told me I needed to play outside as a child, which I did, but only under protest by bringing a book with me.) Do you prefer hot or cold weather? Even then, I liked the books better because (to me) the TV series didn't feature many of the things detailed in the books, like how they moved across America as pioneers, the different kinds of houses they lived in (in the TV series they were always in the same town, living in the same wooden house), how beautiful Mary's new dress was, etc. Also, the books feature beautiful illustrations by Garth Williams. The PBS Documentary is out about Laura Ingalls Wilder tonight. Are you planning on watching it? Are you a Little House on the Prairie fan? I am a lifelong fan after my Great Grandma gave me the first four books on my 8th birthday. These books made me a reader. I already watched and enjoyed the documentary tonight. This is the first documentary I've watched where I have met a bunch of the people interviewed and have been to most of the locations. It was a bit surreal. I told the family we still need to get to Mansfield Missouri. I don't think they are as excited to go as I am. Although camping on the Ingalls homestead in De Smet is still one of the best vacations we've ever had. What were your favorite childhood books? My number #1 favorite books were definitely the Little House on the Prairie series. You can tell from this picture that they were much loved. My Great Grandma Kile gave me the first four on my 8th birthday and I promptly sat down and read Little House in the Big Woods that day. The story was engaging and gave me details of what life was like during that period of history. This is the series that made me a reader and a lover of historical fiction. Great Grandma Kile gave me the next five books for Christmas that year. I would bring them with me when I went to visit her in Indiana in the summer and she would read them with me. She really liked Laura and Almanzo's romance. I love being able to flip open the covers and see her message there. I miss her. The shot glass on top is from our family trip to Walnut Grove (and Pepin) in 2016. My then 8 year old son Daniel got me this "little cup" for Christmas, not realizing it was a shot glass.🤣🤣🤣 We also visited De Smet South Dakota in 2017 and camped on the Ingalls homestead. I still need to get to Missouri! This is Day 20 in the #booksandbacktoschool challenge- childhood favorite. This is the book of my childhood. My brother and I loved #littlehouse books. In fact, this book is the reason I wanted to learn to read at a young age. And it was worth it. My #fantasy series is influenced in part by the Little House on the Prairie books because I always admired the step-by-step instructions written into the story of how to make things—bullets, cheese, maple candy. In each of my books, I include at least one scene in which a character uses #primitive methods to create something useful—a bonnet, a stepping stone, etc. Thank you, Laura.
