ABOUT ME, PART 1: I have a lot more followers now than when I started out, so I felt like it was high time to post about myself, the person running this account: -I am nearly 50 years old, have a philosophy Ph.D, and am a former academic. At this time in my life, I read solely what I want and at the pace I want. As a result, I do pursue loosely-defined ‘reading projects’ from time to time, but otherwise I read whatever it strikes my fancy to read. Does this make me a “mood reader”? If it does I am fine with that label. I consider myself a lifelong learner but I have not been a schoolboy for a very long time. I can’t work from a syllabus anymore. -I do read new books sometimes, but generally speaking it takes me at least two years from publication to read a book. I don’t work in publishing or book promotion; I have a job utterly unrelated to my literary interests. I like classics, nonfiction, sometimes romance, fantasy, sci-fi, you name it. I don’t feel a need to participate in the sausage-making involved in forging contemporary literary taste. I have no desire to be an ‘influencer.’ -On that point, I lack the energy or inclination to try to develop a ‘brand’ in any part of my life, and this account is no exception. I like to read so many things! Picking a lane and sticking to it without deviation rankles me. «Forse hai bisogno di me. E nemmeno te ne accorgi, James». 𝑹𝑬𝑪𝑬𝑵𝑺𝑰𝑶𝑵𝑬: Nonostante il libro fosse molto sostanzioso, ho divorato in circa una settimana il primo volume della trilogia. Prima di parlare in modo molto più approfondito del romanzo, bisogna dire che il racconto affronta molte tematiche importanti, che possono urtare la sensibilità di molti (si parla di autolesionismo, disturbi alimentari e vari disturbi mentali); non sono l'argomento centrale ma hanno una loro parte nella storia. Questo non è un semplice enemies to lovers, è “il” libro perfetto del trope enemies to lovers. I due protagonisti, June e James, sono davvero accaniti: i due si odiano tantissimo. Entrambi non hanno peli sulla lingua e ogni scusa è buona per stuzzicarsi a vicenda. June è la tipica ragazza tranquilla ma determinata al tempo stesso, mentre James è il classico bad boy che sa di menta e tabacco. Ciò che incuriosisce il lettore, oltre i battibecchi tra i due, è la trama che prende varie strade diverse: è presente il multi POV. La scrittura di Stefania è semplice e lineare, le descrizioni sono parecchio accurate e riesce a far coinvolgere il lettore. Ciò che mi è piaciuto molto, sono stati anche i piccoli dettagli presenti sulla copertina, poiché ciò che troviamo nella copertina del libro è presente anche al suo interno. Ma, nel primo volume non è presente tantissimo romance… Quindi bisogna attendere il prossimo per avere qualcosa in più (e fidatevi, ne varrà la pena!). Preparatevi a immergervi in una lettura ricca di misteri e intrighi, tra litigi e chissà… Forse qualche battutina un po’ sdolcinata. Book Review: The French Art of Not Trying Too Hard Author: Ollivier Pourriol, Helen Stevenson (Translator) Profile Books Ltd, 2020 Goodreads rating: 3.37/5 Lettie rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ I purchased this book on Amazon for Kindle edition, costing £4.49. And after reading this book, I would say you better get it from the library if you are still interested after reading this review. If you try too hard to read the book, you may have gotten the message all wrong. As the writer commented in the last chapter, the book is “only an airport book”. The whole point of the book is to tell readers not to try too hard to aim at something. By letting go the thinking of aiming at a goal, you would become easier in achieving it. Ollivier has tried hard to take examples from different experts, be them tightrope walker, professional chef, footballer, free diver, pianist, etc, to prove his point that one does not need to try too hard to reach to the top. Practice may be important but taking actions at a comfortable state is even more important. He’s got a point in this aspect, in terms of making a balance and not straining oneself too much. However I couldn’t help but think that he committed some sort of selection bias in choosing the French celebrities/ experts which can best illustrate his point, without much evidence-based reasoning behind. Well....he did say he took the approach he proposed here to write the book so he didn’t try too hard to gather evidence to write this book. Fair enough... He also used Dan Mclaughlin’s personal experiment to break the myth that 10,000 hours of mindful practice can enable one to become an expert in any field of one’s preference. Dan eventually failed to become a professional top-level golfer like Tiger Woods and gave up early on his 10,000 hours of training. Another piece of evidence that trying too hard only breaks one’s mind instead of guaranteeing achievement. Even though the book was written in a very disorderly way and lacks any concrete evidence in backing it, there are still some takeaways. 5/5 ★ “Isn’t it strange how the world works sometimes? It’s never a matter of time, but a matter of timing.” After a dreadfully long reading slump, I have finally read a book which I could confidently say is my FAVORITE BOOK. I never would’ve imagined that I would read my favorite book this year, but wow! I just randomly picked it up on a Friday night, and it became my first ever annotated book and now my favorite book. This Seven Year Slip book is just *chef’s kiss*. (iykyk) As I read and watched reviews and recommendations of this book, I was immediately struck by the uniqueness of its plot and immediately thought that it would be a magical read. And boy, did it not disappoint. The Seven Year Slip is the epitome of a beautifully written book! The writing was just beautiful. The romance was so well-written and wasn’t rushed at all. It was the book that gave me all the romance feels, and at the same time, it gave me lessons in life and love through a well-thought-out and beautiful story. This book made me realize that in life, we should always chase the moon, and in chasing the moon, change is bound to happen, but change isn’t all that bad. Change can bring beautiful things. Change is an experience that is bound to happen, and there’s nothing we can do but face it headfirst. The book also shared with me that the phrase “Right person, wrong time” is real because in life, it’s never a matter of time, but a matter of timing. The Seven Year Slip has taught me sooo much but also gave me butterflies. It's my house anniversary today 🏡 One year ago today Jordan and I moved into our house, and I wanted to take a minute to be sappy. It didn't take long at all for the house to feel like a home and I try to appreciate everyday that I live here and we have our own space to do whatever we please and to look after. It definitely does not feel like a year since I took that first photo standing on my deck and the house has already seen quite a few changes but I'm having a lot of fun along the way. ⭐️⭐️ "Lugar feliz" é um dos novos lançamentos de Emily Henry, uma das favoritas no atual ramo do romance literário. Após "Leitura de verão", meu primeiro contato com a autora e a primeira vez em que favoritei um livro de romance, fui com todas as expectativas para cima de "Lugar feliz" e, infelizmente, me frustrei. O livro conta a história de Harriet e Wyn, um casal considerado inseparável por seu grupo de amigos, mas que, na realidade, são a personificação da falta de comunicação. Como o grupo se tornou uma verdadeira família, todo ano eles fazem uma viagem juntos, e, como a casa vai ser vendida, essa é a última viagem deles, com a pequena surpresa de que também é a comemoração do casamento de dois amigos dos personagens principais. Para não estragar o clima da viagem ou o momento dos amigos, Harriet e Wyn decidem fingir que ainda são noivos e aí entramos em todo aquele clichê de relacionamento de mentira se torna relacionamento de verdade. Os problemas com esse livro, no entanto, não envolvem o clichê, mas incluem: a falta de comunicação já citada anteriormente, a falta de maturidade dos protagonistas que, mesmo estando na casa dos 30 anos, agem como se fossem adolescentes e, principalmente, a falta de plot. NADA acontece nesse livro. Eu não sou especialista em livros de romance, me introduzi nesse mundo há pouquíssimo tempo, então não sei se é algo comum e em nada me incomoda o romance ser o foco de um livro, contanto que aconteça algo por trás, fator que Henry conseguiu escrever com maestria em "Leitura de verão", mas que pecou em "Lugar feliz". Os protagonistas apenas se provocam o tempo inteiro, escondem coisas um do outro e os demais personagens são igualmente problemáticos, podendo se passar por adolescentes mimados. Acredito que a relação entre o grupo foi mal explorada, assim como os personagens secundários, com quem tive muito mais afinidade do que com o casal principal. O livro, como um bom clichê que Henry sabe fazer, termina bem, mas isso não o torna uma obra boa, uma vez que sua escrita é pacata e desinteressante. E você, já leu "Lugar feliz"? O que achou? Firstly this was such good narration by Penelope Rawlins and Kelly Burke, this is a high quality audiobook. It’s a psychological thriller, with lots of twists along the way. It centres around Anna, who begins a relationship with Cary, whose wife Presley disappeared a year ago and is presumed dead and Cary is now bringing up their baby daughter Harper with help from Presley’s mother. Anna quickly falls for Cary and beautiful Harper, taking on the roll of wife and mother and finds herself in a new neighbourhood and surrounded by a community into which she doesn’t fit and goes on to find out that they are all holding onto their own lies and secrets, including Cary. This was an easy, enjoyable listen and I loved the twists along the way. Definitely recommend. 🩵LECTURE TERMINÉE🩵 Ce troisième volet des Queen's Council se concentre sur ma princesse préférée, Jasmine. J'aime Jasmine non seulement parce qu'elle incarne une princesse des mille et une nuits mais aussi parce qu'elle est un personnage fort, déterminée à ne pas se laisser faire et à sortir du joug d'un dictat dont elle a été victime toute sa vie. Je l'aime beaucoup parce qu'elle sait ce qu'elle veut et surtout, ce qu'elle ne veut pas. C'est une grande force de courage à mon sens. Ce roman se concentre sur sa vie APRÈS le classique Disney que nous connaissons tous. Son père, le sultan, est mort. Elle se prépare donc à monter sur le trône, le cœur lourd. Seulement, elle ne s'attendait pas à se battre pour la couronne qui lui revient de droit. Un mystérieux prétendant à la couronne surgit de nulle part et Jasmine se retrouve contrainte de devoir faire ses preuves à son peuple et surtout, à ses ministres, qui semblent ne pas vouloir d'une femme à la tête du royaume. Si j'ai beaucoup aimé le personnage de Jasmine dans ce livre, les descriptions des décors et les nouveaux personnages qui gravitent autour d'elle, j'ai trouvé la première moitié de l'histoire très longue à se mettre en place. De plus, certains aspects de l'intrigue sont très obscurs à mon sens. Je ne suis pas friande des histoires de revenants, vous me connaissez. Cela s'éloigne beaucoup de l'univers magique et merveilleux de Disney. Mais dans l'ensemble, l'histoire tient la route et je suis contente d'avoir eu entre les mains un livre se concentrant sur Jasmine qui est bien souvent oubliée. J'ai tout de même apprécié ma lecture, le suspense étant omniprésent dans l'histoire. “Red, White & Royal Blue” by Casey McQuiston ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This took me forever to finish.. the story dragged on, chapters were long, and I wanted it so badly to be dual POV. It was a struggle to get through it to say the least.. took me about a month. I didn’t love this book but I also didn’t hate it.. very much in between. The author did an amazing job with the characters. I felt like all of them had a great storyline, background, and were depicted really well. The actual story and plot of the book was what I missed out on the most. I just was not connecting like I wanted too, and same with Alex, MMC, and Henry’s, MMC, romance. I wanted so badly to love this book because of the hype, but it just wasn’t for me.
“Brain Damage” by Freida McFadden ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one didn’t give me too much “psychological thriller” vibes.. I was waiting for that much anticipated plot twist but there wasn’t one. I really enjoyed the plot line, the dual timeline, and the characters. I felt like all of characters played a key role in Charly’s, FMC, recovery and growth. Overall, what I expected from Freida… an easy read.

In questo racconto Gide ha voluto porre l'accento sull'ipocrisia, le manie e la stupidità dell'umanità. Lo scienziato massone che si converte e abbandona tutto ciò che è mondano. Il Visconte de Baraglioul, scrittore poco affermato, che scopre di avere un fratello illegittimo. Le dame che vengono raggirate per "salvare il papa rinchiuso nei sotterranei di Castel Sant'Angelo". L'anima buona e semplice, Fleurissoir, che parte per la sua crociata a Roma Il giovane Lafcadio che racchiude una miriade di caratteristiche differenti e intorno a cui si svolgerà la gran parte della storia. Anticonformista, intelligentissimo, scaltro, con un'alta considerazione di sé ma anche chiari i segni di un disturbo psichico (già nel 1914 Gide fa un quadro piuttosto esemplare), che si manifestano attraverso l'autolesionismo che lo riporta alla "Disciplina", quando sa di essersi lasciato andare. Decide di uccidere Fleurissoir, senza un movente, solo per provare a se stesso che se decide di fare qualcosa niente lo fermerà. Infatti il monologo interiore chiarisce esattamente questo evento "Non è tanto degli avvenimenti che sono curioso, quanto di me stesso. Ci sono tanti che si credono capaci di tutto, ma al momento di agire si tirano indietro...Che enorme distanza tra l'immaginazione e il fatto!..." Al termine della storia egli confessa al fratellastro, il Visconte, il suo atto e sorprendentemente viene da questo giustificato, proprio perché l'azione non è stata mossa da uno scopo.
