I embarked on my yoga journey at the age of 40, a testament to the notion that there’s no ‘right’ time to start, only the moment you decide to take that first step. With a body stiffened by years of sedentary work and a lifestyle far removed from physical activity, I was the unlikely yogi. Flexibility was a foreign concept, and the idea of twisting into poses seemed nearly impossible. But as I turned another year older today, celebrating my 44th birthday, I’ve never felt younger or more vibrant. The physical transformations through yoga are evident—I’ve gained flexibility and strength that I never imagined possible. However, the true magic of yoga unfolded internally. Yoga isn’t just about the asanas; it’s a deeper journey into gratitude, patience, and understanding one’s body. It’s about listening to oneself and honouring what you hear. What truly captivated and surprised me was yoga’s profound internal transformation. We have this tendency of “knowing,” of having an opinion about a most of the topics we care about. When we form an opinion, I think it gives us the illusion of having more control. That’s how it goes: “I think this is how things are; therefore, I understand; therefore, I know; therefore, all other viewpoints are wrong. I know. I’m right, and therefore, I’m in control.” Do you agree? Honestly, my view of life was shaped by a very narrow scale of greys, mainly shifting between black and white, right and wrong, justice and evil. Until 2023 came along and created a big turbulence in my conception. I heard someone talking about how, maybe, we should change the mechanism of how our thought process works and, maybe, instead of right and wrong, add more question marks [??????] to our reasoning. Instead of “I know,” add more “I don’t know” to our reflections and conclusions. Why did this come up, and why am I sharing this with you? Because I couldn’t find a way to convey the messages of chapters 9 to 12 from the Bhagavad Gita:) This argument may have rung a bell of other connotations for you, and if it did, it’s only because nothing is new under the sun. Everything we experience in our days is no different than what our ancestors had been experiencing many years ago. Day 4 of #aloloveforbackbends is hip flexor opening, this lunge variation gets right in there! In general, I believe in pure coincidence. But sometimes, a range of occurrences triggers magical thoughts about whether it is a cosmic hidden hand managing things on a macro-cosmic level or nothing more than sheer chance on a personal level. I don’t have an answer. It can be completely a result of serendipity (timely, but unplanned, discoveries), or a systematic development of events. Who knows? Here’s an example: I’ve been thinking lately about a few deeper implementations of the pairs of opposites. We can immediately understand light and darkness, joy and sadness, birth and death, peace and war. We know that only those who suffer will learn the measure of mercy. Only when we lose freedom do we understand how valuable it is. But what about feelings like belonging, happiness, and bliss? What about our purpose, contribution, and individualism? Can the pairs of opposites shed light, or are they an absolute truth that can be understood only by experience? I was pondering about this question 🧐 and with no expectations decided to continue my studies of the Bhagavad Gita. Guess what, two verses down, I found this one: “O Bharata, by the delusion of the pairs of opposites arising from desire and aversion, all beings are subject to illusion at birth, O Parantapa.” Do you think it gives an answer😄?
