Eye contact aka the look of love. Where Amy and I immediately had eye contact from our first contact, Pippin was something else. It took her months to look me in the eye. Being abused in many ways her trust in people was far gone. The first time I saw her having contact with and trusting a friend was when Eva @quirbachdogs visited us in February. Pippin trusted her after three days and allowed her to cuddle her. Not only was Eva allowed to touch her, Pippin showed how much she enjoyed it. A few weeks ago something beautiful happened. My friend Paula, who is a frequent visitor here so not new to Pippin, was cuddling Pippin and as you can see on photo one Pippin was fully satisfied with it. Paula knows thé cuddles spots. (Amy agrees!) Then Pippin turned her head and made deep eye contact with Paula. True contact. A look full of love. The photo nr 2 is a still of a video where I captured the moment. Last year by this time my six weeks UK with Amy entered my last week. Here's a reshare of one of my favorite three days visiting The Seven Sisters, Birling Gap and Beachy Head. We had four seasons in one day weather, from hailstorm to sunshine all over the place. Little did I know Amy wouldn't be able to go on a trip like this anymore. Happy sixth gotcha day dearest Amy! Six years of unconditional love and trust. Six years full of adventures, great and small. Six years of Amy in my life. Last night I received a gift of nature. I dreamed of my mother. We sat outside on a terrace at the backside of a café, somewhere in the UK. Blooming magnolias above us. We changed seats for a better place. She even had a mobile phone, a blue one, and we could have a conversation. A proper chat. She was alive and kicking in my dream. Younger and full of laughter ♡ My mother died end of March 2017. I didn't have a conversation with her long before that date, talking at least about 20 years from today. Today a year ago I traveled with Amy to the UK for a 6 weeks stay. For me the UK feels as a safe haven, as home, as the place I feel the happiest. It was excaxtly what I needed that time. Today it was all about Amy (more in stories) . An appointment at her fysio/ chiropractor followed by a vetvisit. We went to our previous vet who now works in a practice other than ours. She's my favorite and so happy she still works closeby. Something is bothering Amy, she's not herself. Even the fysio noticed it (hooray for specialists knowing your dog for years so they notice a difference!). I want to rule out a few things before we can fully jump to the conclusion she's a very tired senior senior. Wich is also absolutely fine. I mean, her first seven years she performed topsport on Olympic levels. It took its toll on her body. She's here nearly seven years. So being tired in a tired body seems perfectly normal. Love is (not) canceled. Swipe for second photo. Suddenly I saw it this afternoon. A small heart-shaped freckle on Pippins covered in scars body. A tiny black heart on my little warrior princess. No clue what's she's been through in her galguero seven years. All I can tell is a lot of her visible scars are not the 'tipical' hunting scars. While love is not canceled for Pippin, it certainly is for Aitana. She's the Spanish champion 2024. You would think she will be treated like a queen, being a champion. Bringing in loads, and I mean loads, of money. Sadly it's not the case. Her life, and the lives of the 14 others who didn't win in the finals, will be absolutely hell. She will be used for breeding, over and over. Being tucked far away in a locked up shed or bunker as she's worth a fortune, and so are her pups. One day she won't be able to give birth anymore. That will be the moment she will be abandoned, thrown out or if she's lucky handed over to a perrera or shelter. If she survives these years of hell there is a slight chance on a sweetlife. Galgueros don't differentiate in who they throw out. Male, female, puppy, teenager, adult, golden oldie, no matter the color or type of coat, pregnant, injured or even healthy. One thing they all have in comon: not fit for the huntingjob anymore or by any other means profitable. Adoptors do tend to have a preference in who they prefably want to adopt. Age and color seem to matter. Please, think about adopting a senior. Look at Amy these days, 13,5 yrs. You all see her forestwalks, beachwalks and beachzoomies. Slower than earlier, but still so happy. A bundle of love. Pippin seems to re-live her probably missed puppy years. At 7 yrs she has neverending energy on walks! World Galgo Day, part 4. Survivors. I never think of Amy and Pippin as survivors although they truly are. Amy handed over by her galguero after 7 years of duty, I told her story many times on here. Pippin was dumped at a perrera after her 6 years of duty. Pippin was rescued from the perrera by Galgos del Sol. Pippins passport says the name of her galguero and his adres too. I looked his adres up at Mr. Google. Not that Pippin lived there, that's for sure. I felt sick doing it, even though I wanted to know. I have many questions for this man. I would like to know where the scars that literally cover her whole tiny body come from. Obviously not huntingscars, at least not the ones on her back. And Mr. Galguero, was it really nescessary to cut her ears, really? Where, or should I say how, on earth did she get her mussles from Brussels from? How on earth is she so frightened of sounds from outside? A doorbell is absolutely terrifying for her. Did you enter with a big bang when you came to collect them from their shed where you kept them? Did you raise your voice, raised your hands and feet often too? I bet that when I look at her behavior. Why is she so scared being left alone, even with her sister closeby? Why? Why? Why? And guess what Mr. Galguero? She's leaving all that behind her. In the six months she's been here you and your dispicable behavior is day by day becoming a memory from the past before it will fade in total. Despite the visible scars, you will leave no trace. I will do everything in my power for her to experience that day. Untill then she eats like lion, runs like the fasted hyena on our beach and curls up to me during the night. Word Galgo Day, part 3 All photos by @galgosdelsol. Those who follow me longer know part three always is called 'Smile again'. Because no matter their past, their smile will come out again. Their eyes will twinkle again. Their inner clown that was hidden so far away is still there and finally safe enough to come out. This year I want to highlight the galgomums and one galgodad in particular*. Imagine being pregnant on the streets or in a perrera. The stress of never feeling safe, always hungry, haunted and even abused while you carry your precious galgocargo. Galgos del Sol provides a safe space. These days the mums get a so called puppy- kennel when available. A 'double' kennel with more space for the family. Staff helps with the birth no matter what time, monotoring the mums before and after that moment. Sometimes pups need extra feedings by humans. When after a few months it's time for the family to let mum have her well deserved me-time, the pups head to their own kennel together. Often having the playarea for themselves at lunchtime. Best part for the volunteers is to get them back in. Hehehe, when you know you know! The mums get rest and a chance on a sweetlife. And the pups are getting ready for adoption too. Learning to walk on a lead and getting to know how to interact with other dogs and humans. It's a huge task, from bringing in a pregnant galga to getting all of the family adopted. Did you know it's usually one puppy from every family that has to wait for ages to get adopted? Every single time! A big shout out to all the rescuecenter owners, the vets, the cleaners, the volunteers, the people behind the scenes, the people in the villages who give food to all those (pregnant) dogs running around so they can get rescued, the donators, the fosterfamilies and all others involved to make all these beautiful hounds smile again! *The Flintstones Wilma & Fred came in together(photo 8). Galgodad did an amazing job in taking care of the pups. World Galgo Day, part 2 I wasn't planning a 'what does it look like' series this year. I wanted to focus on the happy stories. But it didn't feel right. It's not a day of celebrations. It's a day of focusing on the horrendous truth. So.... what does that look like being thrown away like trash, used, abused, left to die, broken? It looks like this. Images often say more than words. So many pictures and stories on a daily basis. Some linger on. Keep coming back. This is one of them, a photo made by @belalkh. I know excaxtly wich part especially pulled my heartstring: the blue ponyband in the little girls hair. My mind wanders off to their house, that certain morning. Despite the circumstances this mother made an effort for her little girl to look beautiful. Despite the lack of food, hygiene, warmth and anything that they deserve this mother took her little girls hair and made her a tiny ponytail. With a blue ponyband. Maybe the little girl insisted on it herself. Who knows. This day her little two years old daughter was killed in her hands in an Israeli bombing of their house west of Khan Yunis. What on earth has this little girl with her blue ponyband in her hair and her mother done to deserve this? It's beyond me. It's not about where she's from. It's about humanity. There might be a little girl taken hostage who also had a blue ponyband in her hair. The fact her freedom is no priority to her government is also beyond me. This afternoon I was interviewed about Amy. Talking about my girl for at least one and a half hour. What an honor. Funny enough the most difficult question was how to describe what makes Amy special. How on earth is that so difficult to put into words while I talk so much about her and that to friends? I told the interviewers she opened a place in my heart I never knew existed, I wrote about it earlier on here. I feel an amount of unconditional love for her so huge I can't even describe it in words. Her unconditional love for me. Every single day. Isn't it an amazing feeling? A little story of a forty years old starfish. ~Mummy? Yes sweetheart. ~Look what I found! A starfish! That is a huge one Amy! ~I want to take it home for Mila @wirthuelle as we will meet up this week. Hmmm, we are not taking this starfish home girlie. ~Please tell me that starfishstory again mummy. It's because of that story I really want to bring it home for Mila. Well, Mila once visited her auntie together with her mummy Silvia. Her auntie had many seatreasures on a shelf, some she kept for 40 years. Like the starfish. At one point Silvia heard a cracking sound..... Yesterday was the day the farewell ceremony of my friend Yvonne took place. On monday I went to say my final goodbye in private to her (so grateful for that) and visited her husband. She died too young the beginning of the new year, aged 52. For over 30 years she battled the disease of Takayasu, faught herself through many downs and enjoyed life to the max on bright days. Bright days sometimes became happy weeks. Or a few months. But never years. The disease of Takayasu only hits around 3 out of a million in Europe or the USA, bad luck she was one of them. She was a beautiful, powerful, creative and sensitive soul. Twenty years of friendship started way back as they were my opposite neighbors in The Hague. Countless coffees and wines together. Laughter. Serious talk. Dinners together. Later on Max joined us. I knew where to go when my Mr. T caught another bird wich I did not dare to catch in my living. She was the type of person always stepping up for and finding injured or dead animals. When you know you know. She was there when Mr. T gained his wings. She loved Fien. She loved Amy. She luckily got to see Pippin through FaceTime. Her eye for details and art was something I loved about her. She had so much love to give, never ever complained and oh boy, she could swear....... and I loved her for that too. Her love for their own three black labradors was endless. While Drop and Luna were already waiting up there 🌠🌠, big boy Sam is still here supporting his hoodad through these sad times. Yvonne and Sam were thick as thieves. Sam jumped in her coffin where she was laid out. He started licking her hands and face again and again. He loved her so much. He knew. Yvonne wanted her farewell ceremony to be a party she once told her husband. I can tell you it wasn't. It was beautiful but so sad. Many flowers and many tears. Sam joined the whole ceremony sitting front row being a good boy. I loved that. Farewell my dear friend, forever in my heart. A recap of our days around NYE. First of all I am very proud of the girls. A different environment (especially for P challenging) , another doggy Sonny around who isn't keen on new surroundings and fireworks either, no running for a few days was a lot to take in together with fireworks. We survived, that's how it feels. Four days where everything was in favor of the dogs. Thankfully we stayed in an old farmhouse of friends of Marjon @lukje, the grounds around it (including chickens and a rabbit hehe) where often enough for my girls. It was sweet to watch them hang out together. When Amy clashed with Sonny Pippin was keen on looking after her. I even found her sleeping close to her, something they never do. Overall feeling? It's insane that we have to 'escape' our own house to 'survive' a NYE. For two days we had non- stop fireworks, thankfully 3 à 4 km away so it felt like a permanent backround noise in the end. Bombs that made our doors shake. Marjon and I are a good team in days like this, that's priceless. But I am still recovering and taking things slow. In The Netherlands this year two people were killed due to fireworks, specialists in thé eye hospital here called it an 'horrornight' re injuries. Youngsters lost hands and fingers. Over 200 police officers are attacked by heavy (often illegal) fireworks while trying to do their job. The police union want a total ban. Our government? Silent. While some parties do want a total ban, some are still against it. How on earth can these people look at themselves in a mirror? It's beyond me. So happy new year friends, make it a good one. When I noticed the war on Gaza wasn't an item on our six o'clock news, I knew I wanted to share these photos of @belalkh, an artist/ photographer who risks his life to keep us posted on what's happening there 24/7. Nineteen weeks ago this Sunday this girl stepped out of a van in Belgium after a 24hrs drive from Spain. Not sure what I adopted looking at this photo! I signed up for a 7 yrs old galgogirl. What I got is a galgogirl acting at the beach as if she's just turned two. A galgogirl who eats like a labrador. A galgogirl who must have been an operasinger in her previous life when I listen to her whining. A galgogirl who snores like a tired farmer. A galgogirl who shows utter excitement time after time when I come home after being away for a while. A galgogirl who runs faster than the wind. A galgogirl who's happier every day, shaking off her previous not so happy life. Making room for happiness and good memories in her heart and pushing the invisible scars further to the back. When I look at her many visible scars it makes me sick. What on earth have they done to her? Knowing she's safe and happy now makes it able to push those feelings to the back of my mind. Finally some sunshine after all the rain! Three happy girls on the beach today. Lots of runs and sniffs for the girls and I could do what I love at the beach: watch my girls and some beachcombing. It's truly my happy place. I often say 'love lives here', it really does for me. So.... I would like to ask the woman walking the pier with a dog on a flexi lead......stop janking your dogs neck every five seconds! Truly every five seconds while the dog walked next to her! I had to look away because my heart couldn't take it. I would also like to ask the man who was shouting for his dog for ages like he was in a Trump-lookalike-challenge, stop this behavior. It's annoying for others, who are having a wonderful sunny walk and your dog was happily roaming doing nothing wrong. And last but not least a not beach related rant: can we all agree punishing a three months old puppy who is an anklebiter as she should be at this age makes no sense?? This 13+ yrs old girl of mine continues to amaze me. Today she got clean bill at her two monthly fysio/ chiropractor check. Just one reset for her hips ( the usual from day one) but that was it. Sometimes her back is a complete mess, today it was all good. Four Galgos del Sol @galgosdelsol girls on a beachdate, it doesn't get any better. Today we finally met up with Salty & Abby @galgosalty and their humom Angelique again. It was about time! Togetherness. When I adopted Pippin I never expected Amy or (any) new sister to be closely when it comes on hanging out. Amy is a loner, she's happy with her own space when it comes to other dogs. So when I saw them like yesterday during the day and evening I was surprised. That same morning Pippin decided it was time to jump on the sofa to be close to me. So what to post when my thoughts keep drifting away to all those innocent people who live in a nightmare day by day, year after year, all around the world ? These are some snapshots of our week including beachwalks, thundershirt time as we had lots of workers in the house, sisterlove, thundershirt time as we had lots of workmen on Thursday, happy memories shared by Eva@quirbachdogs, an emergency vetvisit in the evening for Amy (Pippin was such a brave, supportive girl for her big sis!) and lots of cosy sleeps. Urine couldn't be checked due to containing too much blood. She got meds and urine will be checked again next week. Three months ago this tiny mussled girl Pippin stepped off the sweetlifevan into her new life (nr 10, on our way home) . From the frightened whining girl who wanted to jump out of the kitchen window as soon as we entered our house (it was closed of course) she has developed into a curious, sassy girl (watch the story of her roaching in stories) . So many firsts to look back at already! From sleeping safe with your favorite toy (thanks @anne_franssen) to walkies with friends. From all kinds of weather beachlife to the classic blanket dress. From a first secluded off lead walk to a first taste of coconut joghurt (more please), from all kinds of nature walks to sleeping on a human bed. Your behavior and visual scars make it clear life hasn't treated you well during your galguero years. I will give you all the time you need to fully trust life again. You are my little hero already. I can't wait to see your personality unfold more and more. Today I closed the appartment door for the very last time. Upcoming week is the transfer so cleaning it was today while the girls stayed at our new home. No more difficult slippery hallway stairs for Amy and no more scary slamming doors for Pippin. Instead of my own 'no mores' I thought of the happy memories during this last year. The visits of my friends @rosendorockstargalgo (4 days after I moved in!) @quirbachdogs (three times!), @wirthuelle and @duchyofamsterdam (several times) are definitely my highlights. Together with an unexpected lovely birthday evening with @paulawinkelaar. Watching inspector George Gently on my Ipad and reading The Seven Sisters curled up with a blanket next to Amy on the sofa also belongs to this house. Thank you house for being my safe haven last year, we weren't the match I thought we would be but I will remember those happy memories. Yesterday I took the girls to our new home for the very first time. We sat down for a while, they had a look at the garden-in-progress and we had a little walk in the neighborhood. Beachlife with Mila and her mummy Silvia @wirthuelle. They were over again from Swiss last week and we arranged a date. It was a first timer on our favorite beach for Pippin and Mila (who is used to the beach at Zandvoort). First time beachcafé for Pippin after our walk. Silvia decided to extend their stay and managed to book a place 5 minutes walking away from us! Brilliant! We walked the Great Global Greyhound Walk together, had a lunch in another beachcafé , I took Pippin to the hotel for a tea in their room, they came over for dinner here and Mila tried three beds and we had the most fabulous beachwalk yesterday with Pippin and Mila. Today we said goodbye after a mini neighborhood walk.
