UT-Petty House Another reason I visited-I know there are always a lot of good reasons to visit your people because life is too short not to-was to document Kobe's grandfather's childhood home. As many of you know, I am fascinated by family history. So much so, that I have now travelled the world to document such places, people, and stories. This old farm house in the middle of a cornfield on in the Gunnison Valley in central Utah is close to home. I've driven by it countless times along the old State Street/Highway 89 commuting back and forth between the Wasatch Front and East Zion. When finding family and pioneer history so close to where you grew up, it is still so special. Especially when I get to learn first hand and share that experience with my best friend. I highly recommend it for you too. NM SITE 29 (Part 3), UT. Some details from this spectacular site, consisting of mostly anthropomorphs and zoomorphs. There are at least four likely bow and arrow representations (Slides 1-4), dating these particular glyphs beginning at around 700 CE. In Slide 6, you can see the 60-foot line I followed in an earlier post as it passes through the body of what looks like a snake. Notice the diamond-shaped head on the right side of the zigzag. There’s also a rare thunderbird depiction below it. On the way back from Monument Valley last year, I took the Moki Dugway Pass, a winding gravel road that looms up over Valley of the Gods and eventually takes you by Natural Bridges. At the top you get a great view of Highway 261 that feels like a nice complement to the perspective you find at Forrest Gump Point down the road a ways. NM SITE 29 (Part 2), UT. Some of the busier parts of this awesome site. Some of you have mentioned you see a timeline or map, alluding to the idea that this is one singular themed panel created by a single person, which I disagree with. There are way too many different styles depicted here to make me think one person made all of this. Though the majority of these glyphs are likely from the Fremont Culture, the window of time within that culture is quite vast (around 1100 years between 400-1500 CE). This could have been added to over centuries, by different generations of people who didn’t even know each other. One thing to consider when looking at ancient imagery is that no matter how much you think you understand it, you can never be certain that your interpretation aligns with what these images were meant to represent by their creators. Anyone who tells you they know what it all means is kidding themselves. They’re letting their ego get in front of the imagery. Theories are important in the practice of studying the meaning of ancient rock imagery, but with no real way to prove most of these interpretations, we need to accept that it’s all just guessing in the end. I knew heading into my recent Southern Utah road trip that crowds were going to be a challenge. By waiting until the first week of this month to head out, I lined up right against spring break for most of Utah’s school districts. So I was excited to visit Gunlock Falls for the first time (thanks for the recommendation, @utahfamilyfaves), but nervous about whether I’d be able to line up any good shots. As it turned out, there were tons of people, but after hunting around a bit I found this spot a ways downstream that just worked out perfectly. NM Site 26, UT. Possibly a pair of horned serpents, many of which are thought to be represented in this area. The horned serpent motif is not uncommon amongst rock imagery, but I’ve never seen as many as I’ve seen in this canyon. I’ve read from multiple sources that they’re linked to water, sometimes considered guardians of springs which emerge from the underworld. This spring I joined @hawkwatch as a community scientist volunteer. It's been a lot of fun playing out a teenage fantasy of becoming a wildlife biologist. As part of the Cavity Adopting Raptor Ecology Studies (CARES), my job has been to monitor and collect data from certain boxes that hopefully would attract kestrels to use for reproduction. I also look for banded adults and hopefully will be able to assist in some banding myself.🤞🏻 For those that don't know, the American Kestrel is the smallest member of the falcon family in North America. Their numbers have been declining for several decades. Hawkwatch International has been doing amazing conservation efforts for not just kestrels but for all raptors. Please consider making a donation to them no matter the amount. I’d have to do some more research to figure out exactly where I was for this Summer 2020 sunset over the Great Salt Lake. I know I was somewhere up along the firebreak road in Davis County, up into Centerville or Farmington. Most of the time when I head out for a spontaneous sunset shoot, I’ll head to one of two or three locations, which I guess isn’t all that spontaneous. NM Site 20 & 21, UT. I’ve seen literally thousands of sheep depicted in rock imagery. I’d go as far as saying that up to 75% of the zoomorphs I see in the Four Corners states are meant to depict bighorn sheep. Why? We know there was a much larger population of sheep 500+ years ago, but what about elk and deer and rabbits and all the other game animals that surely provided sustenance to the Ancient Ones? Why the focus on bighorn sheep? Perhaps they were the most challenging of the game animals and bragging about hunting a deer or rabbit just didn’t make the cut to be immortalized in stone. These particular sheep stand out because of how their horns are depicted. The four arching lines certainly resemble typical horns, but they also make these guys look as if they have long hair brushed back like pompadours (😂). And get a load of that coyote/dog with its almost smiling mouth and curved tail. I’ve read that the upwards-curved tail could represent a domesticated animal. It absolutely looks like a dog to me. I get a great sense of action with this one, like it’s barking at the sheep. The final image was a stand-alone panel that was isolated from the other glyphs but along the same ledge. Of course the rows of dots bring counting to mind. A calendar? A map of crops? The abstract stuff is always the hardest to feel a connection to, but I don’t need to understand it to appreciate it. Thanks to social media, I recently learned about a seasonal waterfall within a reasonable driving distance. Dong a daily check on the flow strength, I managed to time a visit with a fully flowing waterfall. It is indeed an beautiful scene. The hike wasn't terrible, though not for those with questionable stability. My only problem was just how popular it is. I could hardly find a moment where people weren't wandering through the shot. Still, I found a few. NM Site 19 (Part 2), UT. It looks like there are at least two different cultural periods (3 if you include the historic inscriptions) represented on this panel, based on the variety of patina. Most of these glyphs look old, but some have completely repatinated to the point where there’s no difference in color between the pecked surface and the surrounding surface (slide 4). I’d guess the darkest of these are Archaic (1,000-2,000+ years old), and then most of the others are Northern San Rafael Fremont (around 500-1500 years old). As far as subject matter goes, you have the two serpents I mentioned in Part 1 (Slides 2 & 3), odd insect-like glyphs and anthropomorphs (Slide 4), possible hand and foot prints (Slide 5), and even a hunting scene with a bow and arrow (Slide 6). In addition to the more visible glyphs, there are plenty of underlying glyphs that have repatinated. I’m guessing even more snakes since this panel is located over a den. NM Site 15, UT. A couple of great panels that show a variety of zoomorphs. I call the panel in Slides 1 & 2 “Counting Kills”, because it makes me think of a tally with all the columns of dots next to the animals. The more you look at this one, the more you notice certain inconsistencies, like the far left group of dots has a line that follows the curve of the rock. The largest group of dots has a top row that blends in with a centipede-like zoomorph. So wild! NM Sites 15 & 16, UT. Some unique sheep that stand apart from the more typical designs found in Fremont imagery. slides 1-3 are forward facing sheep, showing both horns, unlike most sheep depictions that show them in profile with one or two horns curving over the back of the animal. These are reminiscent of Coso Style sheep found at sites in the Mojave desert west of Death Valley. Slide 4 is another quadruped, most likely another sheep, but the head has eroded off (top left). You can see the neck, some remnants of horns, and four legs with a snake below the segmented body of the sheep.
