Peconic Community School’s First Annual Giving Day – is tomorrow, Wednesday, May 15th, and we hope every member of our school community – parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and staff – will join hands in giving to make a difference in the lives of our students and the future of our school. This day will be a celebration of the hands-on, project-based, community-minded learning that has been making PCS so unique for the past 12 years, and we hope you will join us in supporting our mission to offer life-changing, world-bettering education to children on the North Fork, with a gift to Peconic Community School. Tuition covers only 70% of our operating costs, and we rely on fundraising efforts like Wednesday’s Day of Giving to make up the difference. As many of you already know, tornadoes swept through Tallahassee Friday morning, causing severe damage to our community. Hundreds of downed trees, electrical outages and buildings completely destroyed. Our building, along with others, was destroyed. We are salvaging what we can and searching for a new building. To the hundreds of calls, texts and messages I've received, I can not thank you enough. To the 40 or 50 individuals that jumped in on Friday and stayed all day with wet feet saving our inventory, words can not express my gratitude. You have shown me love I pray I can repay. There have been two defining times in my life that have given me certainty to pursue a career in medicine. During my sophomore year of college I was told that I had femoroacetabular impingement (pincer type) with a torn labrum in my left hip, and my team doctor encouraged me to have the surgery to repair it. Because it was so early in my collegiate pole vault career this was a difficult thing for me to navigate and I was nervous of the outcome. Completely devastated and terrified I leaned on the support staff of KU Athletics to get me through this physically and mentally challenging time. Experiencing the steadfast support from my team of athletic trainers, coaches and physicians is what inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. A career where I could work with others and provide care to those who had been in my shoes and needed a care team to lean on. It was after college that I started to understand specifically where I thrived in medicine - fast paced, critical environments. During my first code as an inpatient phlebotomist I found myself calm in a high pressure situation, a similar feeling I had experienced on the runway in my pole vault career. Working together with a team of patient care techs, nurses, respiratory therapists and doctors to resuscitate this patient back to life was extremely rewarding. Knowing the summation of our efforts gave this patient’s family more time on this earth with him was an invaluable and defining moment. There have also been moments where the outcome has been the opposite. Yet I find it is in those moments that the flame in me is ignited and the fire is fueled even more, where I am inspired by the challenges of medicine, and I seek to try different methods to achieve a better outcome the next time around. It is these times in my life that excite me most about becoming a physician. Today, we’re celebrating!🎉 Thanks to an incredible donation from Stamford Lane United Church’s Bargain Boutique, we’ve been able to support the opening of Orchard Park’s morning snack program! Stamford Lane United Church, located on St. Peter Street in Niagara Falls, has long been a beacon of community support. Operating on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2 pm, the Bargain Boutique offers a curated selection of gently used and new clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home decor, all meticulously curated to ensure quality. This volunteer-driven initiative allocates all proceeds back into the community, benefiting various local organizations and we’re truly honoured to be one of them! Orchard Park Elementary School, previously the only school in Niagara Falls without a Student Nutrition Program, had been on a waiting list for funding. Thanks to the invaluable contribution from Stamford Lane United Church, this barrier has been swiftly overcome.
