The wagon-top chancel ceiling of 13th C. All Saints Church, Gazeley is decorated with rare wooden carvings which escaped mid 17th C iconoclastic destruction, probably because they are very high and hard to see. The most renowned is the 'bared bum' (photo 2) but there are many human faces and beasts - domestic and mythical. They are now suffering water damage due to leaking roof tiles, and I visited the church on a recent fundraising afternoon.
Little Snoring church in Norfolk once stood beside a World War II airbase, when one might have seen Spitfires arriving and departing nearby. Now all signs of it have vanished, leaving the church to the peace and quiet of Norfolk village life. Its round tower is a feature of this area, where rough flint was the easily available building material. The tower was built in the 11th century, but more unusually it still stands although the church was rebuilt beside it. The Feldebrő Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Martin was most likely built in the latter half of the 12th century in similar style to orthodox churches. The remains of the exterior pillars of the first square-shaped, five-nave building extended at four sides with apses still can be seen. Underneath the sanctuary of the present Baroque-style church a crypt with a burial vault is preserved in its original. Went to see another window featured in @stroud_story ‘s talk “Arts and Crafts Stained Glass in Cotswolds” South Window of South Transept St John the Baptist Church,Burford @burfordchurch The window was designed by Christopher Whall , dated 1907 to commemorate the lives of John Leggare,John Noble and John Meade Faulkner - all of whom were deeply committed to the preservation of the church building. Organ Restoration Project Update: In the west organ gallery, the installation is nearing completion. Over the coming weeks the upper boards will be fitted to the soundboards - these are the parts that the pipes actually sit on. The remaining wind trunking will also go in, ensuring a proper supply of wind to all parts of the organ. Once this is complete, it will be time to switch on the wind for the first time and test the installation! After Easter, tonal finishing will begin, lasting several weeks. All Saints at Orton, Cumbria - Iconic lime rendered tower (harled 2005-6) seen in the last image from the road c.1 mile away. Inside lots of nice things, most interesting to me is the ‘girlish angel’ window in the baptistry with a streaky sky, designed by Beatrice Whistler (1857–1896) and made up by Campbell Smith in London 1892 - stunning colours. Repairs on site completed 👩🏻🔧 It is a great honour to be asked by a local church to carry out repairs. While I was doing the repairs, people were coming in and out to change flowers and to prepare for the meeting, which made me realise that the church is well looked after by the local people. To now showcase the inside of St. Nicholas, Barfrestone. The church is a small double cell chapel consisting of a nave and lower chancel. The ornate decoration of the outside continues indoors, with perhaps the best examples seen via the chancel arch, wheel window and alter windows. One of the alter windows is surrounded by the faint remains of medieval wall paintings. Giving an idea of how the church would have been splendidly adorned many centuries ago. The stained glass windows are Victorian in an early English style. An interesting quirk I missed out at the time of being there is that the church bell hangs from inside a yew tree outside the church. I have a lot of photos to post from this year but I very recently went to a church that knocked my socks off and therefore, it jumps the queue and gets two posts to itself. St Nicholas, Barfrestone (or Barfreston, or even Barfreystone) is a 12th century Norman church in a small village of East Kent. The walk there truly felt like a pilgrimage treading along a deserted country lane in the wind and rain. After arriving I quickly realised that this would be one of favourite parish churches I’d ever seen. The ornate detail of the characters (monkey riding a goat anyone?) and decoration of the South Door arches is likely what you are first to see up close. And what a treat it is. There was a lot to take in and I was genuinely in awe. The other major highlight is perhaps the wheel window decorated with dragons, monkeys and sphinxes. This window resembles one at nearby St Mary’s, Patrixbourne. As well as two others in France, which explains the West French influence. Lots of time can be spent examining two further intricately carved door archways, an array of intriguing and amusing corbel heads and examples of ‘graffiti’. St. Mary’s Church in the village of Sunridge in Kent, dates from the 12th century, with additions and renovations made in the 13th and 15th. A church in Sunridge, likely this one’s predecessor is mentioned in the Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conquerer in the wake of his conquest of England. The church contains a series of beautiful stained glass windows and monuments. All of the above has earned it the designation of a Grade I listed building. The busts depict Elizabeth, Duchess of Argyll and Lady Caroline Conway, as Roman matrons, created by the latter's daughter, the well known sculptor and protégé of Horace Walpole, Anne Damer, in 1808. Those buried beneath the church include William Manning, who served as Governor of the Bank of England between 1812 and 1814 and a Member of Parliament between 1794 and 1830. He also worked as a merchant in the British Empire and campaigned against the abolition of slavery. Today I'd like to bring you a nice example of local parish church in Cantabria. I went to Puente Viesgo to the spa, and I decided to take some shots since the light was so good. This is the parish church of Puente Viesgo dedicated to San Miguel. The majority of what you see was constructed/reconstructed in the 1950s. However the church includes some original bits from the latter middle ages/early modern period. However I say *bits*. Hello Everyone! I’m trying something new here! We had a walk around Kingston Deverill and Tisbury today. With the winter solstice fast approaching it’s fascinating how yew trees span both pagan and Christian beliefs. Many English churchyards have yew trees and some are over a thousand years old. The yew tree has been associated with death and the journey of the soul from this life to the next for thousands of years. Celtic druids saw yew as sacred and planted it close to their temples to use in death rituals. Later many churches were built on the sites of temples and Christian and pagan imagery and beliefs often mixed together. In 601, Pope Gregory suggested that places of pagan worship could simply be converted into Christian churches and the yew was rebranded as holy: the heart of the tree and berries are red, while its sap is white. These colours symbolise the body and blood of Christ.
