Two of the last Hutton’s shearwaters in care are progressing nicely in rehab 🙌 One fledgling has been in care for 5 weeks since 3 April to regain body condition from emaciation. Weighing 217g upon arrival, body weight is now >300g. Release is scheduled for Saturday regarding weather. As it is the first time in their life that these young shearwaters encounter the sea, good conditions are vital. During strong swells and gales, they are unable to feed and utilise a lot of energy - which we want to avoid for freshly released seabirds. The second shearwater has been in care 1.5 weeks since 28 April, being the last rescued fledgling of the season and a very late one at that. This shearwater arrived downy and emaciated at 225g. SHEARWATER RELEASES 4 endangered Hutton’s shearwaters were able to be released last week 🙌 These fledglings were in care for 2-3.5 weeks. Their initial low body weights were 215g, 235g, 239g and 243g, they were released at >300g. The fledgling in care the longest this season has been in rehab for over 5 weeks in relation to poor body condition. It was a beautiful calm day for release, with three of the shearwaters swimming and diving off. They were in their element, preening and flapping their wings - finally in the ocean where they belong. Rhinoceros auklets bobbing on the open ocean west of Tofino on Vancouver Island. Rhinoceros Auklets are fairly common breeders in Pacific waters from southeastern Alaska to Washington, and are seen farther south during the nonbreeding season. They can be common sights during whale-watching tours in Puget Sound and the Salish Sea of Washington/British Columbia, as well as in Monterey Bay, California. The purpose of the Rhinoceros Auklet's horn (technically part of the bill) has always been something of a mystery. But in 2019, research revealed that it's fluorescent. Although it looks grayish to us, the horn is brightly colored for animals that can see ultraviolet (as Rhinoceros Auklets can). Our beautiful Effie the Kermadec Petrel. Effie came into care a few months ago, suffering from complete exhaustion and starvation. Although improved dramatically in strength and weight, Effie is still unable to waterproof herself as she had a swollen oil gland. This photo was taken shortly after a swim. Waterproofing is vital for seabirds to survive in the wild and it’s one of the first things we look for when determining if a bird is suitable for release. Seabirds will use their oil gland and gently coat their feathers and this will keep them dry and insulated as they spend the majority of their lives at sea. This is also why seabirds never look wet after diving, and you will noticed bead like droplets dripping off the feathers. There have been small signs of improvements for Effie, however at this stage she is not ready for release. Each year on the third Friday of May is National #EndangeredSpeciesDay. This special day gives us an opportunity to recognise and learn about the importance of protecting endangered species. One of the most captivating stories in Bermuda is that of The Bermuda Petrel. Commonly referred to as the Cahow, this is Bermuda's National Bird! 🇧🇲 It is a pelagic seabird that spends most of its life out on the open ocean. They feed on small squid, fish and shrimp. Believe it or not the Cahow was believed to be extinct for nearly 300 years until several were found in 1951. Since that time, dedicated conservationists have worked relentlessly to help bring this species back from the brink of extinction. Amazing story! Horned puffin in the #alaskawaters These sea birds spent the majority of there lives at sea in the North Pacific feeding on small fish. Come breeding time they return to small island colonies stretching along the coast from BC to Siberia with a estimated population of around 1 million birds. Each spring breeding season, puffins develop a more colorful & robust beak to help entice a mate. After the breeding season comes to an end so do the colorful beaks for another year. They shed the outer layer to expose a smaller & dull colored version for the more practical side of life...fishing. One of the amazing abilities puffins have is to store fish on a set of small pins located on the roof of their mouth. They can carry an average of 8 to 10 fish with a document record of over 60. This is the Southern Giant Petrel we rescued yesterday south of mandurah After some fluids and food he seems to be doing really well. I Thought this photo was very intersting as it shows the tubenose structure on his beak. Seabirds from the Procellariformes family, including petrels and Albatross actually drink seawater. They have Glands that filter salt ions from their blood and then excrete it in the form of saline from their nostrils that are located in the two tubes that sit across the top of their beak, giving them the name Tubenose. The beak is also thought to channel airborn scents helping the birds find plankton blooms and food in the open ocean. This Arctic Puffin belongs to the auks or alcids which are part of the Alcidae Family in the Genus Fratercula. All Auks at notable for their ability to 'fly' in the water as well as in the air. In the air they beat their wings up to 400 times per minute often flying low over the ocean's surface. While they are excellent swimmers and divers, their walking appears clumsy. During the winter the puffins beaks and feet turn to grey, but once the mating season begins they turn bright orange in preparation for the mating season. The size of their beaks increase as they mature and serves to demonstrate their quality as a potential partner. Puffins are monogamous and once they find a partner they stay together for life. Puffins lay one egg per year and both the male and female share the duties of incubating and raising the chick.
