Wherever foxgloves grow in abundance you can be sure it’s a place where the fey are present, for these flowers thrive in old stories, riddles, secrets, and Otherworldly enchantment. A West Country legend explains why foxgloves bob and sway even when there is no wind: this is the plant bowing to the fairy folk as they pass by. Dew collected from the blossoms is used in spells for communicating with fairies, though gloves must be worn when handling the plant as digitalis can be toxic. In Yorkshire, it’s deemed unlucky to pick and bring foxgloves into the house, as it’s robbing the fairies of a plant they delight in. Foxgloves give us digitalin, a glysoside used to treat heart disease, and this powerful plant has been used for heart tonics since Celtic and Roman times. The foxglove was a flower sacred to the goddess Flora. 📍 Prussia Cove ~ 2nd-4th February 2024 For my third year course trip we spent a weekend in the alluring Prussia Cove. Home to a history of smugglers, seals and secrets the trip proved inspirational and I am certain the area will crop up in my writing for years to come. Staying in The Lodge we were granted stunning views of the surrounding bay and the sounds of waves crashing nearby to drift us to sleep. When I was a little girl I would create miniature villages using a mixture of the left over building sand and earth in our garden. Whilst this sparked my imagination and creativity, I was always sad that they had no occupants. Saying goodbye to the colorful leaves 🍂 Since I can remember I always loved to read about fairies, elves, pixies, and other mystical creatures based in European folklore. I’ve had tones of books on this matter, fairytales, novels, poems, many of them richly illustrated. One of the most interesting creatures I read about are the sprites. It seems that the sprites are often being mistaken with sylphs (the elementals of air) despite the fact that they have little in common. "Sprite" literally comes from the Latin word spiritus, via the French “esprit”,meaning spirit or ghost-like beings. A water sprite (also called a water fairy or water faery) is a general term for an elemental spirit associated with water, according to alchemist Paracelsus. They’re often described as a tiny humanoid with insect-like wings, unlike nymphs who look like beautiful humans. Sprites are possibly the first fairies to be depicted as having wings, and are described as tiny ethereal beings with translucent glowing ghost-like bodies. They are also considered as autumn fairies - the fairies who change the colors of the leaves in the autumn by flying and using a paintbrush or “magic dust” to paint the colors throughout nature. They are well versed in poetry and music and live a quiet, simple life. Sprites like to reside in forests or wooded mountain terrain. Some make their homes high in the branches of trees while others prefer to live near ponds and streams. Sprites originate in celtic folklore, but became more popularized by William Shakespeare and for example in ‘The Tempest’ and ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’, which is my favorite ever play by him. Mên-an-Tol or The Devil's eye🕳️ It is believed to be a bronze-age (at least 3500 years old) stone formation consisting of 4 upright stones and one Holed stone in the middle (2 of the upright stones have fallen). It is one of the best known megalithic structures in Britain. The use of this stone is still a mystery, however it is believed it was used for rituals or as a window to other worlds. It may have also been a component of a burial chamber but this has not been confirmed. Mên-an-Tol has generated a wealth of folklore and tradition over the years too. It is believed that there is a piskie guardian, a Cornish pixie. In one story, a changeling baby was put through the stone in order for the mother to get the real child back as piskies would give them a different child (often a piskie or fairy child). Evil piskies had changed her child, and the ancient stones were able to reverse their evil spell. Men-an-Tol has also apparently been used for telling the future. In 1856 Robert Hunt wrote that the holed stone could answer any question. Two brass pins would be laid crosswise on top of each other on the stone. The pins would move by themselves, dependent on the question asked. People used to believe that it would cure people of their ailments, such a rickets, by passing through the hole 4-9 times. It is also believed that if a woman was to pass through the hole backwards 4 times at a full moon they would soon become pregnant. The sites reputation for curing back problems earned it the name the "crick stone", also passing through the stone 4-9 times to cure this. The stones were also seen as a charm against witchcraft or Ill wishing. Holed stones are very rare in prehistoric Cornwall; there is only one other comparable site, the Tolvan Stone near Gweek. What a perfect day for our last day at Prussia Cove. The light was incredible all day. We swam off Piskies Cove in turquoise seas, some brave souls went tombstoning off the rocks (incl Esme), then the seal hole, swimming to Enys (for the first time), the kids kayaked across the bay, and a sunset walk to Cudden Point, the sleeping dragon. M Y T H D A N C E R (part two) I stumble on a three-day rave, Midsummer night’s ‘make-merry;’ myth-walk into Brigadoon, the kingdom of the fairies. The rave-team have assembled, the conch shell has been heard, the call to dance has brought us here, we could not be deterred. The woman by the lantern, could it be Joan the Wad? The piskie queen, her highness, the lady-of-the-lamp. She’s singing invitation, a calling song to gather, amidst the green-winged orchids, and in their petal scatter. We consecrate our bodies to this holy night’s advance, ecstatically, we chant the words: ‘Ho and away to the dance!’ Now I become the disco-faun, sprouting cloven hooves, I dance until my body knows no other way to move. I sparkle in the dream-time, this flow-state we inhabit; deep in to this house of myth, this quartz vein in the granite. And in this place, we dance the steps, of all who ever here have met, bare foot upon this storied-land, when Midsummer was at hand. I feel the spirits touch my lips, with moonshine from the wrecks of ships; revellers mercy is my mead, I follow where the piskies lead. The veil swirls on the floor, we’re going through the secret door. Jack o the Lantern, Joan o the Wad, upon our dance good fortune nod. Here is that for which I longed, a place in which my heart belongs. It brings me into revelry, I for this, and this for me. Under the disco ball of the moon, in the wild meadows of Brigadoon, the cool night air caressing my skin, as fairies dance, and whirl, and spin, We keep the fire lit till morning, still dancing when the day is dawning. We sway in the glow of the sun on the grass of all the ravers, we’re the last. Brigadoon has let us stay in joy and celebration, enchanted was this night we spent in rapture and elation. *** If one comes upon Brigadoon and an invitation is extended to stay, then you must remain in the settlement throughout the night, or else its enchantment will be broken. And this is not a settlement needing to be freed from a spell. Those who reside here, spend their days and nights in perpetual celebration. It is a place of everlasting joy. M Y T H D A N C E R (part one) Where I am going is so magical I cannot be sure it exists outside the bounds of this myth-walk. To all intents I am walking into Narnia, to Lyonesse, to a hundred of the imagination. The last I see of the sensible world is the labyrinth streets of a south Cornish fishing town. Then I am in the dream-time, trailing the golden thread of a midsummer call to revelry. This might just be a fairy dance to which I’ve been invited – we are in the kingdom of Joan the Wad after all, (queen of the Cornish piskies) and the profusion of wild flowers is the floral equivalent of a sign saying ‘welcome to the fairy realm.’ As I ascend the hill through wooded paths, I feel the centuries slip away, like garments shed in the high summer heat. The forest concertina’s, expanding and contracting, breathing me in to its deep green Otherworld. I see glimpses of river through trees. Reflections of wood on water. I say the words the fairy-tales taught me. Three times of course. Ho and away for Brigadoon! Ho and away for Brigadoon! Ho and away for Brigadoon! For this night has a name. A Celtic one at that. The place to which I am being drawn is known as Brigadoon. The name evokes the Celtic goddess Brigit, the patroness of poetry. It is a place of myth, a village which appears once in a hundred-years, a village where time stands still. The name translates as ‘sheltered town.’ Mysterious and beautiful, Brigadoon is hidden under an enchantment, invisible but to the piskie-eyed. No car roads reach it. The Ordinance Survey have not been able to map it. I can’t tell you how I travelled those last few miles. Unless the piskies really did teleport me?! I rub my eyes and find myself in the courtyard of an ancient farmstead. In the surrounding meadows there lies an encampment of tents and wagons; a beautiful caravanserai adorned with a fluttering of psychedelic colours. A gathering of revellers are dressed in their finery. They welcome me in, and the wood-smoke from the fire begins to smudge our everyday names. A conch shell sounds, and the celebrations begin! I take off my shoes, enter the holy ground of dance. Myth-walker? No, myth-dancer tonight!
