Added something pretty cool to a frame and hung it up the other week! This is an animation cel from the 1982 movie adaptation of The Plague Dogs which was a 1977 adventuring book written by Richard Adams that told the story of two dogs Rowf and Snitter escaping an animal testing facility and trying to survive on their own. It's been one of my all time favorite books of all time and you may have seen on my page that I am a huge collector for this story! This cel is also signed by Colin White himself who's other work includes other movies like Watership Down, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Just finished reading Richard Adams’ The Plague Dogs and really truly enjoyed it. It’s very dark, and I particularly like how Adams uses his animal characters to tell a compelling story. I’m wanting to do some fanart of it and what better than doing some canon designs of the main characters! I have not seen the movie. I think Snitter May have been described with a short tail at one point but I don’t remember. Also I read audiobook and during the duration of the entire story I was thinking it was Snitter and Ralph. I thought , okay, unusual for a dog to name himself that considering he’s never had a person. Wasn’t until after I learned it was in fact Rowf. I don't normally post about cartoon movies on this page but this is a film, but this movie carries a strong #antivivisection message . Based on the #richardadams RIP, who also wrote #watershipdown, 72 & scripted, produced & directed by Rosen who slso made the the film version of 'Watership Down'. With a top cast, the charcters are played by acclaimed actors such as, #christopherbenjamin #jamesbolam #nigeljawthorne, #barbaraleighhunt #patrickstewart & #johnhurt absolutely excells, giving maybe the best vocally emptive performance that I've ever seen in a cartoon. Though i think it's a film that should be viewed as an educational experience, but this is a grim, emotional impactual film, that's downbeat in the extreme. The movie opens with some truely horrific scenes graphically dipicting a vivisection laboritory, filled with critters, monkies & such like. A jack russel, who once lived as a pet named Snitter played by Hurt, who suffers from siezures due to brain experimentation, finds his cage is left slightly open. He climbs out & frees his friend, a black Labrador named Rowf, played well by Benjamin. Rowf is a lifelong lab dog, who mistrusts all humans. The 2 dogs make a daring escape. Whilst of the run we learn of the awful cruelty & suffeeing these dogs have endured. The pair find they are ill equipped to survive on the out but their situations improves, when they meet a field wise crafty fox named Tod played by Bolam, & helps the dogs get by in exchange for a share of their hunts. However things soon turn so sour when humans with guns enter the scene. (Who are almost never shown above the waist, above the pack's POV) Word gets out that the lab the dogs escaped from has been experimenting on Bubonic plague & a lynch mob of humans come looking for the dogs. The animation is quite brilliant & very realistic. This builds up characterization way more than more live actor drama. Sure it's all rather anthromorthic but it gets it's a strong anti #animalabuse message across perfectly this way. Highly Recommended.

It’s taken a long long time, the soundtrack to the movie Plague Dogs has arrived on Amazon Music. The music has a creepy feel but it’s worth a listen if you’re into soundtracks. The main highlight is ‘Time and Tide’ which is in my all time favourite songs list. The movie is tough to watch (not a family movie by all means!) and I’m trying to find the courage to read a page of the book (looking for a audiobook version to help me along) but that song is awesome and majorly underrated. “Cloud of Unknowing” this piece has a lot behind it. It’s mainly showing how paranoia and pain clouds your perception of what’s around you. What’s really beautiful seems horrid and twisted. The good seems rotten. The idea for this piece came from a line in the film and book, “the plague dogs” that really stuck with me. Upon seeing the helicopters searching for them, one of the dogs says "the flies, out of my head. Look, they've grown huge. Circling round and round the hills". The lines of the mountains in this piece were actually traced from the cut lines on a photo taken of my torso after a particularly nasty manic breakdown where I tore at my chest with my nails until it bled. I sat in the shower watching the blood trickle down in the drain for who knows how long before snapping out of it and cleaning myself up. The piece reflects that fear of that sorta thing happening again. I know it won’t now but at the time of making this I had no clue what to expect from my Ill mind. Si eres de los que no soporta ver que pateen a un perrito en la calle, no te recomendaría ver esta película. ‘Plague Dogs’ es un film fuertemente emocional cuyo mensaje refleja el impacto de prácticas experimentales en animales presentándolo de la manera más fría posible. Narra la travesía de dos perros que escapan de un laboratorio en el que son objetos de estudio para alcanzar una libertad que creían imposible. Ahora, la película no se diferencia de muchas de las películas que quizás recordemos de esa época en la que los perros tenían aventuras en su propio lenguaje interno mientras los humanos a su alrededor no entendían dicho lenguaje canino; y sin embargo comprendíamos las diversas situaciones en las que se introducían estos canes desde nuestra perspectiva omnisciente, juzgando tal como haríamos si tratásemos de entender por qué algunos perros actúan de cierta manera. Sin duda, es una película para adultos y tiene un aire a documental, siendo ya el segundo film de Martin Rosen con un aire similar. Y es que no solo muestra una situación muy lamentable en la que se hacen experimentos en diversos animales para probar productos, medicinas o cualquier tipo de sustancias para el posterior consumo humano, también representa conductas y eventos dignos de la naturaleza salvaje dentro de nuestro entorno “humano civilizado”. Hay una gran capacidad creativa para hacernos conectar empáticamente con esta historia, haciéndola no tan ajena lo que nos vincula como actuales padres perrunos o gatunos. No la vería con un niño (aunque capaz un niño sea más capaz de procesarlo, quién sabe). Y es que puede que su mensaje sea fructífero para construir la empatía a temprana edad, pero deja una sensación de crudeza y melancolía muy difícil de asimilar.
