A lovely spring morning sky, while visiting an old friend in East Selkirk, Manitoba. I continually remind myself to “look up”, especially when there are interesting cloud formations that the sun shines through. American poet and author Willa Cather (1873-1947) comes close to what I was feeling that morning. She writes: “The earth was warm under me, and warm as I crumbled it through my fingers… I kept as still as I could. Nothing happened. I did not expect anything to happen. I was something that lay under the sun and felt it . . . , and I did not want to be anything more. I was entirely happy.” Waiting pensively for more warm spring days, as the rain and cold settles in for yet a while longer. Mark Twain was correct when he quipped: “In the spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.” That’s exactly what we’re experiencing in Winnipeg these days. A sparkling geranium blossom, backlit by western sunbeams streaming through the kitchen window. It’s still cool in Winnipeg, but sunshine and flowers make the difference. Canadian environmental activist, zoologist, professor of genetics, and broadcaster David Suzuki says: “The way we see the world shapes the way we treat it. Looking at Netley Creek upstream, at the end of Main Street, north of Selkirk, Manitoba. I don’t know why places like this entice me emotionally and spiritually. The following authors, quoted below, help me understand, somewhat. I know I don’t stand alone, in feeling a sense of existential expansion in staring at scenes like this. Having lived in densely populated cities like Chicago and Bangalore India, and visiting a number of times Los Angeles, California, Delhi and Calcutta India, I now appreciate how tens of millions will never get an opportunity to see what I see standing here on the banks of this Creek. They could never entertain, in their wildest imaginations, how in Northern Manitoba (considered north of the 53rd parallel,in a part of Manitoba about 250,000 km²), there are only about 60,000 people, scattered throughout mostly wilderness. A good friend visiting from Hyderabad, India couldn’t believe how few people there were here, causing him to wonder out loud, “where did everybody go?!” We as a family had the same experience after living a year in India. 20th century biologist E. O. Wilson astutely said: “Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction.” 19th century essayist Ralph W. Emerson said: “I am the lover of uncontained and immortal beauty. In the wilderness, I find something more dear and connate than in streets or villages.” Finally, American naturalist David Thoreau wrote: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” I’m not so much a nature romantic as not to recognize the benefits of living in a city. If I didn’t have 20th century medical care in cities, I would’ve long been swept down the river of life. 🙂 Maybe longing for wilderness is really longing to be young again. 🙂

A stunningly view of Goldeye Creek, North of Selkirk, Manitoba. Scenes like this excite me, making me want to venture further into the Delta marsh, to be with the spring wildlife emerging. In 1984, the American biologist Edward O. Wilson argued that humans have a natural affinity for the natural world. It’s deeply rooted in our evolutionary past. He called this innate urge “Biophilia.“ I believe he’s correct! I’ve always felt the allure of nature, seeking out opportunities to go fishing, hunting, canoeing, camping, hiking, etc. — to breathe the fresh air of the Northern forests. In my late 20s, I researched funding for a wilderness canoe business north of Winnipeg in the magnificent Canadian Shield. How different my life would have been! Being out in nature has proven benefits: it reduces stress, enhances mood, and improves cognitive function. Many have a natural desire for adventure and exploration, to get off of the beaten track, to experience the thrill of discovery and the challenge of navigating the unknown. Perhaps this quest is a spiritual one — to find spaces that evoke a sense of the sacred, like natural landscapes, mountains, forests, rivers, etc., We’re all, in some way, looking for deeper psychological and spiritual fulfillment. I knew I wanted to get out for a walk as soon as I finished work and once I got home Tim announced that he had a letter that needed posting so after a very quick cup of tea, we set off into the village. It has been a dull, rainy day but thankfully as we started to walk the sun began to make an appearance and the clouds shifted to reveal a pale blue sky. We posted the letter in the village post box, once again decorated by the local knitting group before cutting through one of the housing estates. As we walked the pavements, passing the rows of bungalows I spotted a little patch of muscari growing randomly at the road side, looking out of place next to a grid rather than in a garden. We headed for the Cherry Tree estate, the entrance road now lined with the blossom of its namesake and the further we walked, the brighter the evening seemed to become. We followed the pathway that ran next to the fields and with excitement I pointed out a bird of prey circling in the sky in the distance, ready to swoop in on its unsuspecting prey down below. The loud singing of a little blue tit in the hedgerow bought my attention back and I tiptoed over to get a closer look, standing right underneath the pretty little bird enjoying its triumphant song before it realised I was watching and flew off, still chirruping. Fluffy seeds from the bullrushes floated silently through the air, the pond area swathed in the low sunshine as we made our way past the brook and the spring flowers, enjoying the opportunity to walk in the daylight of a march evening. #thelittlenaturepixie #dailynaturediary #dailywalk #shavington #cherrytreeestate #bluetit #bullrushes #discoveringnature

Standing Out From The Crowd The way I see when I am photographing, is through a childs eyes. There is always a connection, whether it be a child hood memory, the tendency to perceive a meaningful image in a random pattern(pareidolia), or just how the light and shadows draw my eye to intimate parts of the landscape. It is very hard to stand out from the crowd in the photographic world, but what is important is how I pre-visualise an image, how it makes my heart jump a beat when I stumble on a part of nature that excites me. Only I know when that happens and that is unique. First few garden days this week and oh it feels so good. That coupled with less doom scrolling and hands in the dirt makes me 100% happier and helps reinstall some hope within. Weeded a few of our veg beds, and our #woodchippath which the weeds or hardier plants love ! Left a #mullien and a couple of #bullrushes on the path though. I discovered some #turkeytail growing on our upright fence posts. I've already got that dried from another birch log that's in its second year of fruiting now. The girls love yo pick it off.. very satisfying. Ordered seed from @green_vegetable_seeds ... probably way too much beetroot and salad varieties but anyhoo. Today we spent a glorious 3 hours out after a hearty lasangne lunch and I thought how easy we all are in the garden.
