This morning I watched the first of the new-to-me religious horror movies people recommended - The Possession. Very good egg @greesystrangler found me this copy in a charity shop, so grabbed it for me 🙌🏻 I really enjoyed it - I loved that it was rooted in religion, but wasn’t a Catholicism-based possession movie. It didn’t scare me, like lots of possession movies do, but it had some really gnarly imagery that I appreciated. Now Playing: Late Night with the Devil (USA/2024). Dirs: Colin Cairnes, Cameron Caines. Genres: Horror. “Network” meets the 70s possession/devil movie. An overall pretty complementary combination of movie modes for the most part. Though, overall, the movie doesn’t have as much bite as the movies it’s inspired by. It never reaches the heights of the razor sharp and non-stop satire of “Network”. Or the horror of things like “The Omen” or “The Exorcist.” Though, to its credit, it took what was essentially subtext…the idea that media success is an exercise in selling your soul to the devil…and made an entire story from subtext. That said, most of its commentary on the exploitative nature of the media is given passing lip service rather than milking it for any new, witty observations. A bit of a missed chance there. And it can be a bit too much of a slow burn as a horror film as it makes its way to what is an impressive and horrific conclusion. That said, the attention to period detail is airtight. And when it does reach the last 15 minutes I did experience a couple of moments of genuine surprise. And David Dastmalchian is a nice feather in the movie’s cap as the lead. Carrying the whole movie with ease. Late Night With The Devil (2024) is the best horror movie to come out this year. It reminded me of Ghostwatch and A Wounded Fawn. The late night talk show setting was a brilliant. They did use AI for some of the art in the movie, but it's obvious when they do. AI can't do hands, so you'll notice that immediately. Even though I feel like they could've just hired an artist to do the creative work, there isn't enough of it to take away from the movie itself. I recommend this to fans of psychedelic horror and possession movies. Another one from POSSESSION (1981) This move sticks with you. @isabelleadjaniofficiel performance is incredible. I made this with gouache, a paint I haven’t worked with before… it was super hard. Dried fast, hard to blend🥵 I might have the wrong pencils… also I’m not sure the paint is the best, bought it at a museum store 😁but it came out quite good. Guess who watched Possession 1981 for the first time? Anyways I had to draw Anna because Isabelle Adjani's performance was definitely the highlight of the film. It is difficult to believe that she is an actual person because everything about her was so haunting. Her gaze, her laughter, everything. Possession is the kind of film that you cannot take in on the first watch. You have to give it time to settle in to appreciate all of its grotesque beauty and deeper meaning. It really shows to me personally how underlooked horror is as a genre because Isabelle Adjani deserved all the awards. And for another film from the Mexican/Spanish horror genre (I love what they're putting out, if you haven't caught on yet) Belzebuth was a pleasant surprise. I went into the film with low expectations because let's face it... how many movies dealing with possession have been released in recent years? Some good, some... not so much. I liked that this one is somehow different. The picture starts out with the lead character, detective Emmanuel Ritter and his wife in a hospital, celebrating the birth of their child. The nurse eventually takes the baby to the nursery and a nurse working the next shift locks the door and proceeds to stab all of the infants to death with a scalpel in front of the adults before slitting her own throat. (Only thing shown here is her stabbing into the cradles, her cutting her throat, and blood.) From here, a series of tragic events involving children take place that are somehow all linked together and detective Ritter is on the case. The story was much more developed than I anticipated and it kept me interested throughout. I did not expect this direction at all. The acting was believable, though I did have a difficult time hearing Tobin Bell speak without hearing the voice of Jigsaw. The only part I found absolutely ridiculous and laughable is when the statue of Jesus comes to life and off of the cross via a demonic spirit. But hey... it added comedic value. Give it a watch! Have to say, after seeing this fantastic film last night, GO SEE IT! Such an inventive concept of a horror, coupled with homage to 70s and 80s talk shows. In a desperate attempt to boost ratings, Jack Delroy’s live 1977 show, brings together a range of guests, from a psychic to a sceptic and a writer who has been helping the only survivor of a fire at a cult house. Things quickly escalate and all hell literally breaks loose. It certainly is a sight to behold. The execution of the story, held ably together by lead actor, David Dastmalchian, who has had many roles in major films over the years, this his first leading character, is the masterstroke. Not only that, the supporting cast are all so strong, it makes for compelling viewing. Haven’t enjoyed an independent horror as much since the equally low budget It Follows. Unlike that independent feature, LNWTD has already hit the mainstream cinemas and deserves all the plaudits and laurels it gets. Superb 10/10 😊😊

Late Night with the Devil (2024) Directed by Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes Resurrecting the Stonewater Theatre Review after a long, unplanned hiatus with a review of the new demonic possession feature, Late Night with the Devil. From the start, the viewer is pulled into the 70s world of television with the promise of seeing something never seen before on the screen from the comfort of your own living room TV set. Embroiled in the cutthroat world of TV broadcasting our late-night host, Jack Delroy, vies for the top ratings by planning a Halloween special that pits the paranormal against the skeptic in full technicolor. Inviting the survivor of a satanic cult and her para-psychiatrist to interview about their experiences with demonic forces, we wonder if this is a not so-subtle nod to our dear Michelle and her doctor/husband Lawrence Pazder. The film plays with the viewer as participant through the viewing, with the camera focus, hypnosis, and hard cuts to commercial breaks asking the question was this planned by the producer (or in our case the director) or is something supernatural afoot? A huge fan of demonic possession flicks, this was no exception. A super fun throwback with some great practical effects and an impressive climax. Possession ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hay películas que uno tiene que ver “de a perro”; no hay abuelita que resista ni Lucas que aguante. El cine de Cronenberg, Argento y Polanski parecieran un juego de niños comparado con Possession de Zulawski. En “Possession” uno se pierde en la mirada azul de la poseída. Anna nos lleva de la fascinación al horror y de regreso, algo así como cuando uno se enamora. Confieso: Isabelle Adjani es mi primer amor cinematográfico. Por otro lado, en aquel año de 1981, Sam Neill estaba endemoniado, tanto en “Omen III” como en “Possession”. Pareciera que el anticristo se le metió en el personaje. “Perraforas”: el anticristo nace en Berlín del Este, a unos pasos del muro, como si el comunismo fuera la cuna del mal, o así lo piensan los capitalistas, y viceversa. Los humanos son una especie muy compleja, tan fácil que es la vida: soñar, comer y pasear. Por cierto, la canción “Sin aliento” de la banda Danza Invisible, dice algo así: “Y te preguntas por qué doy tantas vueltas, soy un poseso, estoy prisionero, no me conozco, algo tira de mí.” Si pones la película en mute, en la escena del Metro y le subes a la canción, puedes ver otra atmósfera, como si el anticristo se hubiera subido al Metro Balderas.
